Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

highest earners

This seems like another culling of the highest earners by Verizon.

The highest earners who also usually happen to be the oldest employees who will hopefully one of these days wisen up and sue the company jointly.

if this is true, verizon is up to its old tricks. wouldn't surprise me.

I've been here 34 years now bouncing from telecom (central office tech, rep the 1104) to wireline desktop services then over to wireless and back to wireline (GRE). I was rif'd back in 2014 after the lowell 'one' campaign and found myself in a non union position as a outside plant network tech. RIF'd again as part of the scab worker relief campaign (ewa) and am now doing PM work as a partnership with IT and HR

Not true about the outsource happening. The EUS cut back was to rid the company of MTS3, 4s, and SMTS/DMTS members. Apparently older culture is no longer valued. Back in the mid 2000s, Verizon Desktop Services was outsourced to Sieman's and within 2 years the company had spent more money on QoS than actually educating the contractors on how to follow what they had intended them to provide. Hence why we have in house LDS. On the wireless side it was always a 5-2 ratio, contractor to employee, the company is going back to this method so it doesnt have to pay an increased amount in healthcare or pay and allows contractors to perform break fix, and software issues, where as employees will handle the 'confidential' stuff under CP810. 30 months later you have a new set of contractors, and they are very expendable.

Agreed that verizon did look into IBM, Judge, HP, and VDSI (handles help desk and tier 1 now) but due to the SoX agreement, VDSI is SOL from touching any confidential internal or external data, even if it is on AWS or GSuite. More so now with Trump at helm and his domestic 'policies'. I know that this was the first wave of RIFs, they are hitting every department... marketing and sales are coming soon, Verizon wants to drop brick and mortar by end of 2019 and increase indirect stores. Godspeed to everyone, the iceberg is near

@TrCERwf-blk. I was on a call last month and ALL of EUS will be outsourced by the end of the year. Whether it's VDSI or IBM, unable to confirm, but those are the rumors.

I don't envy those being left behind. Severance was the way to go. EUS will be glorified help desk technicians, playing phone tag with user across the country. Tell me why you can't eventually outsource that to India and pay them a fraction of what you pay people here? The writing is on the wall. You have MTS 4's replacing mice and keyboards now. What a joke.

VZ is no longer outsourcing EUS or Support. No one would make any money doing so, cutting people near retirement who have been here the longest was the only feasible option. Dealing that and a national support queue where support now handles buildings and end users outside of the old supported area is the new thing. Every tech and support rep now has 1 function - to ensure that issues are resolved everywhere, meaning there will always be work, a lot of it with smaller staffed teams who will probably be paid less than what they should for the amount of work or expertise they are offered. I heard this was Wave #1. There will be several waves as we move towards the end of '18. Most likely you will see lower and middle management start to get cut as you do not need 5 Associate Directors or Senior Managers reporting to 1 director and so on.

"usually happen to be the oldest employees"

That statement is true but there are a lot of younger, super talented guys that deserve every bit of the salary they were paid but ultimately got the ax. Most of what I've seen affected have been MTS 3 and higher. Cutting the highest earners and leaving the MTS 1's and 2's to pick up the slack is a recipe for disaster. My guess is IBM or whomever is negotiating to take EUS off of Verizon's hands, told Verizon they can't all of their current employees (especially the highest earners). This is Verizon's way of showing good faith to IBM/Acenture/Whomever to unload lowly MTS 1's and 2's and pay them a sh-- salary until they can ultimately unload their jobs to India. I got my full severance and it's a big one. I'm one of the lucky ones.
