Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Forced job migration and offices closing as "Class of" takes over - Warn notices to be sent in April

It pays to make friends in people in HR and facilities with Oracle. I've been able to triangulate what is happening, on what appears to be a global scale. At months end (Q3) March 1st 2018 and then the final blow June 1st 2018 as Oracle offices close. Oracle has been extremely quiet on all the layoffs, no comments and no public announcements other than the 10Q where they raised 1.1 billion dollars in severance packages to be paid out by June 1st 2018.

This information is from first hand conversation from people who should know, people in HR and facilities. It is rumor, as they are not high enough in the org to qualify as confirmation, but its also hard not to notice your entire office space being shut down. Not everyone who will be let go over the next 3 to 4 months will be getting a severance package. There is a warn notice that requires notifications if layoffs or terminations are greater than a certain threshold and this varies state by state. The layoffs have been staggered over a year so as to not trip a warn notification unless necessary. There will be a warn notice sent out for June 1st for many states in the US. I do not know the laws for other countries but the whole sale change out of sales to Oracle digital is happening. Product changes are underway. Oracle is about to shut down a great deal of legacy products and go towards a model of skeleton crew support for existing customers. Changes begin March 1st 2018. The warn notices 60 days prior to June 1st will be sent our ironically on April 1st 2018. It would qualify as the worlds most tasteless April fools joke, if it were not real.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worker_Adjustment_and_Retraining_Notification_Act_of_1988

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988 (the "WARN Act") is a US labor law which protects employees, their families, and communities by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 calendar-day advance notification of plant closings and mass layoffs of employees, as defined in the Act

Oracle has not provided notice yet:

http://www.twc.state.tx.us/businesses/worker-adjustment-and-retraining-notification-warn-notices

http://www.twc.state.tx.us/files/news/warn-act-listings-2018.xlsx

What is interesting is that facilities will be closing as well. The number of employees at various office locations have been steadily dropping. Oracle is checkingthe badge counts for people who actually go into the offices, and its way down in certain locations. Shrinkage has already occured as Oracle has closed off certain parts or floors in the buildings they occupy. Now entire Oracle offices will be shutting down. In many cases jobs will litterally be moving to new hubs. For example many people not getting a severance package will be required to move (no expenses paid) to a new city. This is expected to reduce the number of severance packages necessary as people leave voluntarily.

In Texas the new Austin campus will actually force the close of the Frisco office, and perhaps the Irving office in DFW as sales and other jobs litterally move to the new OD campus in Austin. The Austin Oracle Digital Hub is to be completed in March 2018. Texas is an at-will employment state and does not have the "Implied contract" or "covenant of good faith" exception. Oracle can simply terminate the position and the employee with out notice or reason and not pay severance. Texas does have a public policy exception, menaning that you canot be terminated for filing a workers comp claim, for example. Short of that Oracle does not need to follow any rule other than a warn notification. The first push is to close offices in Dallas and force a migration to Austin in March. This should cause a good deal of natural attrition.

From what I understand what is happening in Dallas is happening globally. My counterparts in colorado speak of offcies that are now ghost towns.

Below is a sort of memorial to the fallen, as name plates of managers that got laid off decorate a cube. Its viceral you can feel it everywhere inside Oracle. It will be even more palabale as facilities close.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At-will_employment

At-will employment is a term used in U.S. labor law for contractual relationships in which an employee can be dismissed by an employer for any reason (that is, without having to establish "just cause" for termination), and without warning. When an employee is acknowledged as being hired "at will," courts deny the employee any claim for loss resulting from the dismissal. The rule is justified by its proponents on the basis that an employee may be similarly entitled to leave his or her job without reason or warning. In contrast, the practice is seen as unjust by those who view the employment relationship as characterized by inequality of bargaining power.

Here is a good breakdown on at-will employment laws and exceptions by state:

All the hubs for "Class of" are going live. This marks the full roll out of the strategy put in place by MH back in 2013 to replace high salaried workers with lower salaried less experienced workers. The genius of the plan is that a recent college grad is cheaper than the current employee in every corner of the world regardless of the wage descrepancies between nations. All you have to do is offer a clss of program and create a digital hub presense in every country. That is exactly waht Oracle has been doing over the past several years.

http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/joinclassof/index.html

Job opening and qualifications. Basically any college grad with no experience qualifies.

Sales and Business Development Rep - Class Of-17000ZYV

Preferred Qualifications:

• BS or BA degree with a GPA of 3.2 or higher preferred

• 0-2 years work experience

• Able to demonstrate time management, basic telesales skills, knowledge of Oracle products and services (training provided)

• Goal oriented individual with superior communication skills

• Able to complete individual goals as well as work in a team environment

• Demonstrated ability to communicate using technical concepts

• Working knowledge of Oracle products a plus but not necessary

• Professional demeanor

• Desire for a long-term career in sales

• Able to demonstrate critical thinking skills to acquire a higher level understanding of role, processes, and procedures

The class of program and the Oracle digital hubs are global with key hubs in California, Texas and Colorado. I dont know all the locations, and its not exactly easy to find them. I know they are in 6 of the 7 contents, there is no OD hub in antartica, but everything else is covered. Its quite amazing.

Here is a small listing I was able to google for with in a few minutes. The list is by no means comprehensive. The importantthingto realize is that Oracle has "pivoted" and the employees (not recent college grads) are about to feel it in a big way.

are we saying that OCS with 750 staff per org chart-- will be divided in ..say 4 hubs in US?

or...let go all together? --

@RxVjHGh is a post about OCS. If you are not cloud migration OCS its apparently the end for you.

Here is MH speaking on how he sees cloud:

https://youtu.be/_vsHJUGx1Ls?t=820

Notice how he talks about "piece parts" and integration. Thats pre-cloud. MH thinks you dont need customization when you go cloud. Remember as a consultant you have a role as an integrator and performing customization of Oracle software. That apparently is no longer needed.

Cloud is all magic. Someone else does the work for you. (Oracle has it already done) Who needs consultants? If we need them the consultants can be anywhere because the work will be done in the cloud.

Notice how he says you can close down offices, reduce IT and data centers... That can be done at Oracle...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Hurd

Hurd had a reputation for aggressive cost-cutting. He laid off 15,200 workers — 10% of the workforce — shortly after becoming CEO. Other cost-cutting includes reducing the IT department from 19,000 to 8,000, reducing the number of software applications that HP uses from 6,000 to 1,500, and consolidating HP's 85 data centers to 6.[9] During the 2009 recession, Hurd imposed a temporary 5% pay cut on all employees and removed many benefits. He himself took a base salary pay cut of 20%, although the compensation committee increased his bonus by the same amount.

Ask yourself if he has cut thousands of jobs... latest tally over 52,000 at HP and Oracle... what do you think he is going to do with OCS with 750 staff per org chart--?

I think... he is going to reduce anyone in OCS not working on cloud migrations.

If there is any truth to all said in this thread--'..Forced job migration and offices closing..',

when it comes to oracle consulting ( not sales-- theee OCS').. it turn it upside down..

are we saying that OCS with 750 staff per org chart-- will be divided in ..say 4 hubs in US?

or...let go all together? -- the nature of OCS was to start an engagement anywhere client is..

so -- now it will be remote?

just wondering..

Yes, the field jobs are moving to the Oracle hubs. This summer in 2018 (marking the start of FY19) its all over for the field. Its pretty much out there in plain sight. You job is not migrating to another city. Its migrated to another hub, maybe in a different region of the world. Its all about cost reduction.

Great photos of people in the new hubs:

https://www.glassdoor.co.in/Photos/Oracle-Office-Photos-IMG39313.htm

https://media.glassdoor.com/l/247606/i-flex-office.jpg

Join Oracle North America Sales Engineering Team ---> in India. Yes you read that right. You might not be able to get to the new hub servicing your customer. Unless you want a serious pay cut and want to move to another country, you wont be with Oracle. The North America sales engineering team in India is a shining example. The Austin hub will be stocked with Americans, the tech guys doing Proof of Concepts and demos will be in India. Its all cloud based anyway. No need to be on premises or even in North America.

Imagine the cost savings of cutting the entire North American Sales Engineering team. You wont have to imagine it for much longer. It will be a reality June 1. HD has an Oracle Zero policy. Zero field engineers for North America field sales. Confirmed at the GVP level.

Great video below

Join Oracle North America Sales Engineering Team in India

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE3oy0Dnp9Y

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdmUubQ9wPk

You read that right... North american sales team in India. The transition began when the Approval was given for the 1.1 billion Dollar severance packages in the summer of 2016. That is when the channel partners were let go whole sale. The HUBs have been ramping full steam for over two years. Summer 2018 marks the end of the field organizations and expensive offices.

Its all over, and yeah the field offices will be shutting down asap. Its old news for anyone in the know. Totally new; however, for the peons about to lose their jobs. You were not told as its not popular news. The plan was for a two year long transition to fly under the radar.

https://youtu.be/KwUiRjF-EuM

Its stupidity and cheapness to the max. It will fail horribly. The bonfire will be seen around the globe. But sadly you wont be around at Oracle to see it. Wake up.

Only list of OD hub Locations (on the entire internet?) Can't seem to find where the hubs are in any oracle links or otherwise. Why keep it a secret? Maybe it will be revealed after the layoffs, and touted as a brand new Oracle in some sort of Marketing message. Apparently only two types of workers will be available, hub and remote, field is gone... all repsonsibility to be absorbed by the hubs.

There are no more new on prem Oracle projects, so MH, SC, and LE do not believe that field sales is needed anymore. Get out now while you can. The stock market crash last week is going to affect hiring if it continues. If you are in Oracle field sales in any capacity, you are a fool if you are not doing everything you can to find another job. Oracle is becoming a SaaS holding company, selling SaaS to small/medium sized business through telesales ("Oracle Digital"). People who are layed off will NOT find another job within the company. A few sales reps will probably be retained to do on prem renewals, but that's it. The fact that you are a "Cloud Architect" is not going to protect you are Oracle's IaaS is undercapitalized and is not selling.

One thing is for sure, I'll be checking the recycling bins from now on for memos.

Is it just me or did I see a several stacks of bankers / storage boxes in the mail room? You know the 12 x 24 x 10 boxes you can put files in? I could have swore I saw them. I checked again on Friday and I did not see them. I think they got moved. This was last Wednesday in the Irving office.

I saw of bunch of these in the mail room in may of last year before the layoff June 1. Is it just me or has anyone else seen the packing boxes?

For what its worth I was making some photo copies and tossed an extra copy with some personal information into the recycle bin. A second later I thought it was not good leaving personal info in the recycle bin. When I fished it out to put it in the shredder bin, I picked up a copy of a draft memo describing how to pack up personal belongings from a cubicle and return any access cards or keys belonging to the facilities. After finding this post I'm pretty sure I know whats up. This is in the Broomfield office CO.

Logically what I read here makes sense but it doesn’t jive with what I see in field sales and sales engineers for fusion...do those executives not know or is it a slight of hand thing? Still seeing a lot of training initiatives that correspond with being onsite at a customer...can’t exactly whiteboard over the internet? (Well not very elegantly)

Training initiatives were in play for the teams that got laid off. Trainers and direct report managers are the last to know. Its like a machine that keeps running until it gets switched off.

There’s no listing of HUBS, i’m as there is no listing of data centers ...

The data centers are contracted out .... oracle doesn’t own their own DCs and they don’t want clients to know.

The HUBS are Call Centers and oracle doesn’t want big clients to see what they’ve become: a telemarketing firm akin to Amway sans any payouts. Read: Cheezy peddlers of software with no expertise or support. Customer Success is a marketing term at oracle not something they do. Ask any client.

Good article here:

https://www.employmentattorneyla.com/blog/2017/06/oracle-is-facing-two-employment-lawsuits-in-california.shtml

Investigations conducted by the Department of Labor have revealed that when it comes to the applications of job candidates for product management positions and other technical positions, Oracle hiring has created an applicant pool that is 75 percent Asian applicants. Of these types of positions that were filled, eighty two percent have been filled with Asian employees. This data was reported by The Mercury News.

For technical hires, Asian means primarily India. For sales, its age discrimination, primarily college graduates hired, over 40 laid off.

What if its not discrimination per se, but who will work for the least amount of money with no complaints? What if that is the real plan Oracle digital hubs make half what field sales does. Its really the by product of an across the board 50% pay cut being rolled out...

So expensive white males followed by females are getting laid off, and the hiring practice is cheap Indian and college graduates. Maybe that should be Oracle's defense, hey were are not racist or against older workers we are just really cheap.

Get out when you can and don't wait until they terminate you. The market is still good out there especially if you have proper skills. Its a ghost town where I work and I for one will not move to another city. This is just crazy. MH thinks he can sell software remotely with telemarketers. Good luck with that.

I am not much for conspiracy theories. But I am putting two and two together and this is my theory. The reason they want to do this is a bunch of kids fresh out of school are clueless as to how bad the tech stack is and will say anything. MH is going after small to mid sized businesses and some of the stuff being sold might actually work, enough to keep a few customers. The enterprise stuff is too complex and brittle to move to the cloud. So what do you do?

You milk the enterprise contracts as long as you can, downsize on support just enough to keep the lights on. Then you take a few small wins and blend in the Oracle support as "cloud credits" if a company signs up they get a 50% reduction on support. Who cares if they use it. Its a way to count support revenue as cloud revenue. And you force it on ALL your customers.

You can't do this with season sales professionals and ethical managers... so you lay them all off. Keep the yes men, hire college kids who wont notice or even care. Then when you get rid of everyone you throw the switch. You take 40 billion in support revenue and count 20 billion as cloud revenue. Wall street responds you the stock skyrockets, you dump your stock and head for the hills.

Maybe that's the real strategy.

I mean no one could be so dumb as to think you can sell cutting edge technology, get whole businesses to run their systems on the least advanced, least known and most expensive cloud by having a bunch of telemarketing college kids go after serious business customers. Right? I mean if there is no hidden agenda then this is going to go over like a lead balloon. No wait, it will go over like a lead dirigible.
