if you work for Verizon, the handwriting has been on the wall and whatever happens, you should have already been paying down your debt, downsizing, living below your means, and saving money! Oh wait, that should be the case no matter who you work for!
Usually EISP and RIF's take place in August. Look at the previous years.
In my (engineering) department, we were told notification in late August for a RIF. It seems what they have been doing is RIF-ing and then if the work is still needed, they just hire a contractor/contracting company to do it. I think some aspects of this are illegal, but no one goes after them on it. IMHO, contractors are less invested than employees, but it seems that upper management doesn't care.

Where? What districts/regions? All these rumors but no locations. Wireless or wireline? They could not afford to layoff 97k employees. They will slowly keep turning corporate stores into indirect stores. They are already hiring trainers for these locations. It is happening. But not all in August. Provide proof and locations
@2mzl are you in my garage? We are "surplussed" here too, all while being forced 2 hours every night or you will be forced Saturday then Sunday you get forced all over again and work is so much here you have to return 2 or 3 jobs every day unless you plan on working 13-14 hour days. The plus? I'm getting ready to buy my 3RD house... you read me right... I'm like lowell, but I actually do stuff all day besides photo ops and golf outtings...
Please let this be true,, I need a rest.. Saturday forced.. Sunday forced,.. etc.. We are surplussed in our location but forced every night and weekends we don't make our o.t. hours to avoid it. No relief on jobs so we end up staying on-site to not let our customers down. Money is great but I need time with family.. So just lay me off.. end this misery...

Revenue is down YOY even though Verizon had a "great" quarter. Something's got to give and I'm sure Lowell would rather fire a few thousand employees than cut the precious dividend.
