Never have I seen a more tone-deaf "celebration" in my f---ing life.

Pig fests for RRs ... meanwhile the "retirement" and other going away parties thus far have been far more fun! Some of them even had corporate financial assistance!
Are we actually going to be around for the potluck? Tons of people were moving out of their offices this weekend.
Thank you, Chuck, for hopefully de-railing some of the vitriol on this board, and pointing out how facts can get lost in the howling winds of mindless screaming. It's revived my faith in humanity just a bit this week...
@Chuck :
Great idea. I remember other times when you started something like this and we got to know very late it was your idea. Thanks for suggesting and making this a better place to work. Highly appreciate your go-getter self-serve style.
"If all you're interested in is a free meal, I feel sympathy for you. "
True. This forum is filled with negativity most of the time and I had been thinking along similar lines.
I'm definitely one who would call out the flaws of Oracle management but when we are really shutting shop, I would rather remember the good times I had here with some amazing engineers and great people rather than spew vitriol about how management s---s. If that is all people want to remember of this place, I am not even sorry they have to leave.
But I think this sliver of positivity from a typically-cynic like me will be lost in this forum which is more like a bar where people rant their misgivings away under the mask of anonymity.
OK - here's the deal ... the pot luck was not management's idea - it was mine. So please stop hammering on the "cheap and miserly" talk about Oracle. I'll be the first to bemoan the reluctance of our company to recognize the value of funding team building events and celebrations but this is one time to put that aside. We could have just done the usual piece of cake and sip of sparkling cider and called it a day. But I thought a pot luck would give us an opportunity to take the time to gather together and share some food, drinks and laughs together as a family of friends. If all you're interested in is a free meal, I feel sympathy for you. This is about celebrating the blood, sweat, and tears it took to bring the T8 and M8 servers to the market. Google and FaceBook employees may have their fill of free food, but they will never get to experience what you have been a part of here at Oracle. And if this is our last hurrah, let's make it an enjoyable one! :)
It will not be on wednesday , since samsung is holding a job fair event for oracle employees on wednesday 5pm to 8pm at their sanjose campus for CPU/GPU development. Atleast Samsung takes care of oracle employees well by providing free food and drinks during this recruiting event!!.
Oracle engineering department parties are always horrible...bring your own dishes, chip in your own money. They have no respect the engineering hard work and innovations.
@OQkrTXs-1ddc so far its in SCA . and no the date is not decided yet ( its either Tuesday or Wednesday) . they will probably send an email choosing which day tomorrow
Is there a pot luck event in both SCA and BUR? Is the date decided?
Get used to it! Life is not always a box of chocolates. But if you have the opportunity to celebrate - do it! Life is too short and in case you haven't heard, $$ - you can't take it with you when you leave this world. At least the beer will be free!!!!! :)
SPARC/Solaris is the last warrior left standing in the fight against the Dark Side Intel/Microsoft juggernaut. Be proud to know that you were part of Technology history.
One more thing to remember is that those who worked for Sun, Sun/Oracle in the past and those who currently work for Sun/Oracle are one big family. And like all good families we take care of each other. So please help those who might be in the most immediate need - namely our H-1B brethren.
How many people are bringing alcohol?I think we all deserve it.
Bringing a main dish! I for one am looking forward to spending time with all of the folks I've worked with for the last 10+ years. We were a good team with great people!
Both very good points.
Congratulations to all the folks who worked on the M8 products. The last 10 months or so have been difficult with the layoffs and layoff rumors. The task certainly could have been easy. You guys deserve better!
It is hard to find another company as cheap and miserly as oracle. They have that rep with customers and employees. Congrats to the team on the RR.
Can we just invite intel apple and Samsung there? Saves time from going to their open houses.
we can also do resume review session in place of potluck
Hey guys, we can turn this into an opportunity. Instead of meeting for pot luck, why not make study groups and prepare for interviews. If you interviewed recently, hold mock interiews for peers and share tips.
Embarrassing. 🤦🏻♂️
Good Grief! That's terrible!
This is akin to 'Bring Your Own Rope / Noose' OR Bring Your Own Poison... -:( -:(
since the company can't afford to pay for 'The Last Supper'.
Wish they had taken some out of JF's 'golden parachute / retirement package' to pay
for this celebration OR maybe Sr Directors and above could have pooled to pay for the food.
8/22 or 8/23, people submitting a survey to decide which date. so yes before.
think of it as gathering to say goodbyes.
When is the potluck scheduled? Is it before the rumored 8/24 layoff?
its funny that we have to bring our own food and drinks and arrange it on our own.
Oracle doesn't care celebrating the result of hard working individuals or at least provide the food or drinks. how cheap can you be!! you could at least do one last "thank you" for these people who put all their time to make a successful project.
I'm sure there will be lots of alcohol. It could get ugly.
Layoffs are a dish best served cold.
