Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Rumors

Final notice for France will be June 6th. So rumors tell, next country in line is Spain (sometime this summer) and September it will hit UK. Germany will be the last large country standing and will probably fall after September, but probably still in 2017 wrapped as nice Christmas gift.

But nothing about BeNeLux and Italy so far.

What product support team are the layoffs happening for? What department?

@NFxcp4M-tos, gardening leave doesn't improve the bottom line in a real sense, but in accounting land, it becomes one of those "special items" that they ignore when stating results.

I don't understand how gardening leave affects the short-term bottom line? I can see that it gets someone "out of the way", but if the goal is to report better numbers, how does having someone remain on full pay for 6 months help? Is the short-term benefit that wage can be reported in some different cost center or something?

Oracle does not care about customers, shareholders want money.

@NFxcp4M-jvp: Sorry to burst your bubble, but Poland had a lot of support engineers in sparc, more than Spain, and Oracle didn't care, layoffs commenced either way.

Seriously dude, they do not care. If there are layoffs, they will be done.

The termination period is largely meaningless. There are countries with 12 month layoff period, and Oracle will happily send people on gardening leave for the entire duration.

Suppose they announce layoffs around Christmas. Employees will be relieved from duty (sent on gardening leave) and will not be doing any work, so they'll be as good as gone, whether they have 6 months termination period or 6 years.

Germany has different termination terms depends on the length of your employment.

At Sun/Oracle it isn't uncommon in Germany that employee will receive some form of a termination agreement that your are released from work duties right away and you get your "termination period salary" on top of your severance package.

So yes, the rumors might still be reliable. However it's more likely that UK leaves later than Germany as UK hosts most of the European Directors within Oracle.

Other rumors also say that Spain and Germany will get notified at same time. And that Italy and BeNeLux get their notifications before Spain and Germany.

But fact is, France got notified yesterday (about 150 heads) and last working days for them will be End of November.

If you look at the job postings were they search for two france engineers for tsc x86 in Romania that matches with the layoff in France, they are also searching for one tsc x86 Italian engineer, hence next country is Italy.

Germany has 6 month termination period so they would have to announce that now if they want it before Christmas. So your rumors do not really match up.

Romania is not ready to take all that work in EMEA, so layoff bigger countries like Spain or Germany would have a huge impact on support and i expect that to be maybe early next year or as usual Oracle doesn't care about his clients and just do what they want.
