Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

This is Capitalism - no need being mad at the company

I see people posting about "loyalty" about "being treated badly", at the end of the day, this is capitalism, this is the way it works. Verizon never forced anyone to work for them, never made anyone do anything they weren't willing to do for the right price. In capitalism, the only loyalty is $$$, that's it! If the company does well, it needs more employees-the company doesn't do well, it lets go of employees. Common sense, it's the way it works. Be thankful for the money, benefits, and opportunity they gave you and move on.

Nationally, and globally, automation has gained great profits for those who own industries, but has in many ways hurt the average man and woman, in terms of wages, job security, and new employment opportunities. IMHO, it's time to introduce the 24 hour workweek to adjust the great gains in productivity that, until now, has almost solely benefitted owners exclusively in terms of wealth accumulation. Automation and productivity gains should benefit all, not just one half of the equation. People used to toil seven days a week. Then six. Then the 40-hr-workweek took hold as industries automated. And, then, nothing, for the past 80 years, despite the advent of quick transportation, computers... Almost all used to benefit work-wise from such gains.

If politicians really, truly want low unemployment going forward, the length of the workweek is the place to start, yet people don't feel comfortable stating this simple economic reality.

@MDdgd0g-clh has a point. And so does OP. But what I am seeing now is an over-use of layoffs for "talent remix" . Someday the millenials and fresh college grads are going to regret their enthusiasm for the gig economy. Fate being shown 50+ will further entrench into 40+ due to automation of jobs. Global economy did not fare well for Americans. Good luck getting to retirement, actually owning your home, having money to travel, paying off college debt, and having money to raise a family. Sorry but the good old days were better and I'm going to miss them, I know they are gone, no doubt about that.

Utilities were different than other companies and in this case telephone utilities. You gave your life to these companies . Being called out at all times of the night and weekends and holidays. The union was always paid or. Management was hardly ever paid ot when I started 40 years ago . Dedicated people for the most part worked for the telephone company. They were never a high turnover industry at least in the co and outside plant world. Wireless is a newer phenomena and is mainly a sales environment because const/engineering build the wireless network. Sales has always been feast or famine in most industries and now the famine is setting in. No matter the discipline it took years to become very good unlike other industries. Training was extensive and the company invested a great deal of money in each individual so high turnover was not the objective. You obviously were not a major Telco employee with the stupid statements of its only a business. It is now with these whores running it. It certainly wasn't before when it was run like a fortune 500 company to be envied.

Anyone who understands the economics of business knows the one way to generate profit from revenue is decreasing operating costs. Yes leadership has made piss poor decisions but the company also has to adapt to the ever changing consumer. I may be impacted on Thursday but I have zero hate for them. It's coming eventually but I won't have hate in my heart for this company. Call me what you want, but I'm real, and that's a real thought from an individual who has been with this company for 6 years on the wireless side.

I don't hate the union, I don't hate the leadership even though their decisions have been flaky at times. If anyone has a solution rather than berating those who make the difficult decisions who impacts thousands of people, please go ahead. And if you haven't shared those thoughts prior and are not willing to look at the reality then that's on you.

Well then maybe it's capitalism that needs to change. People's family's, healthcare, homes, lives are going to be affected. Maybe we need a better system, where employees can hold "leaders" accountable and the wealth is better distributed.

Go90, AOL, Yahoo...horrible, uncompetitive pricing - the list goes on and on and..

Yet they STILL overnight deliver a single call out card and then ask us not to travel. Give me a break. You have people whose sole job is to manage back of house clipboards. Really?

You want 300 adds a month on a skeleton crew and then want to hold leadership accountable? Sorry, I couldnt manage a store since I was too busy being a sales rep.

Thanks for the prep talk Lowell. But I'm going to go ahead and correct you:

This is not capitalism. This is the end result of poor leadership decisions. You see Lowell, when you are a bad leader, you have no vision for the success of your company and your employees.

Instead, you sourround yourself with other incompetent leaders and waste billions of crap like AOL, Yahoo, GO90, HUM and so many others.

Instead of being accountable for your failrues, you take it out on the front line in the form of layoffs.

There's the voice of tranquility that was clearly missing up until you posted this.

I think this qualifies for the "Duh?" comment of the day....what say the rest of you?

So glad you stopped by and brought your sunshine with you.
