Or you can have your wife answer and tell your boss, "Sorry, we had a major family emergency come up and I don't know when you will be able to talk to him again..."

Stop being such sheep led to slaughtering - you have to f..k with their heads a little. hR and your boss would go totally apeshit ifthey could not reach you that day. Yes, of course you still get RIFed when they get hold of you but in the meantime you get the pleasure of f..king with them. Don't be such a professional sheep, show some spine and call in sick.

Staying home doesn't mean you don't get riffed. Better start looking for job...

Your manager will probably get RIF'd after riffing you. I remember an HR person that got RIF'd after she laid all the managers off after they laid all their employees off.

I believe they pay the insurance premium through the end of the month and then you take it over. By law, they have to offer Cobra, but you have to pay the full premium. Which is high. I know not everyone agrees with me, but this is the problem with how the USA does healthcare. For most people it is tied to your job.

I wish all Americans would realize single payer would help us. It isn't perfect and yes our taxes would go up quite a bit. But you would not go bankrupt if you lose your job and get a major health issue the next day!!! You can pay for private insurance to enhance it if you can afford it, but my god, why we tie insurance to employment is beyond me. If we had a basic plan for all, people may be more able to financially handle a layoff, and people may also be more willing to strike out on their own as a consultant and whatnot. Small businesses would not have to worry about the cost to cover their folks. I know there are problems with ACA and I believe if Obama could have gotten a single payer plan passed, he would have. I have absolutely no faith that the Republicans will fix it.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand: I think the best approach is to see if there's a better/more affordable option through ACA (while we still have it) before deciding on COBRA. If you have a spouse or partner they may be able to put you on their plan. I live in MA, so I think there may be some good options and if I get RIF'd I plan to look at those before deciding.

I agree with you that "not showing up" is a silly idea and totally self defeating, and yes they can fire you outright. It is painful to lose a job. People feel angry, betrayed. But to do something stupid to try and protest this will have you wind up with no severance at all.

With a RIF, you typically get a severance package and CORBA paid by the company. Can anyone confirm they are still paying for CORBA benefits since your Oracle benefits stop the day you separate from the company?

If you try and pull this as a protest, they could very well move to just fire you with no severance or CORBA.

You do realize they can do this over the phone and Fedex the package to you, right?

Look, this is a bad idea. Unless you never need a job again after this one, don't burn your bridges.
