Thread regarding Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) layoffs

Imagine this... You come to work today (11/21/16), and you are called to an ad hoc meeting at 10:00 AM to review the "Holidays' backup plan".

When you get into the room you see around 10 people there, and none are from your team. Suddenly, a few Managers enter (including the boss of your boss), and around 4 HR people. Needless to say what happens next. That was exactly what happened to me this past Monday, 11/14. One week already and I'm still shocked... My boss even had two approved reqs opened to add members to the team! He told me they were cancelled, but I still see them active. Even if they cancel them, the work needs to be done, so for sure he'll need at least temps.

Be honest and tell me what would you do if this happen to you today... Out of nowhere you are kicked out a few days before Thanksgiving, being you the only income in your home... I have so much anger right now that I'm not sure how to deal with it...

If this makes you feel better... Very soon you'll be like me... Looking at all this mess from the outside, feeling really fortunate of getting the WFR money AND getting a steep salary bump with my new employer within the same calendar year. Ironically enough, this is the year I've earned the most money in all my life! What currently looks like devastating, might well become really soon the best thing that have happened in your career. I am a living example of that. Never loose the faith and pursue what you really deserve and has been denied by this dying Company.

That same adhocmeeting happened to me mid October and along with many others my last day was Oct 28! 26 years old and 3 years with the company and WFR'd! Pissed is an understatement!

That's really sh--ty. You have my sympathies, and as people on here have already stated, once you dust yourself off and start looking for a new job, a few months from now, it'll start to be a distant memory. Put it behind you and enjoy Thanksgiving. There is no point putting a downer on the holidays. Pretend it didn't happen, and start looking for that new, fabulous job next week.

Take some time to reflect on what you want to do and start the unemployment process today and take advantage of what the serverance package has to offer. Start looking for a new job now. Only thing you can do is now look to the new future. I went through it too this past summer. You'll be okay.

Just cruddy the way they handled that. What a bunch of losers. You boss should have just set up a 1-1 and handled it the right way. That just makes a horrible situation worse than it already is. It will be okay and I'm sure you got tons of experience to offer someone more worthy of having you. Even this will pass eventually.

Again... Amazing how there are still people around that think they are layoff-proof... Those are the ones that you see "shocked" when they are given notice.

To be very honest, if that would have happened to me this morning, I would have been screwed up, as I have no savings and I'm living payroll by payroll. A terrifying wake up call for me, as I've been one of those thinking how improbable is that something like that happens to me.. Scary...

I fully agree with @nev... I know this won't make sense to you right now, but believe me... It will... "better being wfr-ed now than in 6 months or a year"... Here's a little tip for you... Plenty of Companies need to fill open reqs before the end of the calendar year - or else they need to go through the whole justification process again with their 2017 budgets. Be as aggressive as possible in getting as many interviews as you can in the next 2-3 weeks, as many employers will be in a rush to make offers (and fill positions) before Dec 31st.

I know how you feel, I was wfr-ed on Jan 2013 (I was 29), I was totally devastated and took me a while to get back on my feet, I had the worst manager I have ever had in my whole career, but my team was great and I truly enjoyed the activities I had back in those days, money wasn't great, but I was never greedy. It took me a few months but I was able to find a job at IBM and then I year later I got this job at USAA and I'm pretty happy with it. Right now (and I know this is hard) you need to realize that having all those negative feelings is only hurting you, not HP, not your manager, just you and your family. Chances are that if you keep looking you will find another job and eventually things will get better, I'm sorry this happened to you this way, but you are probably better in the long term, employees at HP have no future, better being wfr-ed now than in 6 months or a year

I know that feeling really well, OP. It was exactly the same for me, but last year. I was called that Monday to a meeting that came from nowhere, and in a few minutes everything was done, and everyone from HR quickly left... I remember well that only one lady - that was given notice as well - was the only that came to me to ask if I was okay, as I was totally shocked and speechless.

If you have ever sat on the Quarterly Earnings call with the financial analysts, you will find that upper management will gladly take credit for staff reductions.... irrespective of whether it's during holiday season or not . HR is correct in stating that staff reductions are being directed from above.

Bah... And I'm sure upper management will say that the Q1 layoffs coordination reside within the local HR teams. No one wants to be accountable/responsible for something that low...

I have a friend that works in HR, and just asked a few minutes ago if it's true that HPE is laying off people days before the Holidays. She said that it was true and that her team hasn't received any directive to hold layoffs until January. She also said that laying off people during the Holidays is not a decision made by local HR teams, but by upper levels within the Company. In other words, she clearly stated that local HR teams don't have any control over the timing of the process.

To some extent I can understand layoffs communicated and completed by the end of Q4. Q1 layoffs communicated days before the Holidays are simply cruel. At least those f-----g HR a------s should have waited until after the New Year... Freakin' monsters... I really hate being here.

Regarding the two open reqs my guess is that they are for your "foreign" replacements. They just aren't open for US citizens. I would try to find that out, depending on the state you live in you may qualify for extra benefits. Try to stay positive and I know that's not easy.

My first action would be to make sure HR marks you as "re-hireable". Not that you would ever want to go back but still something that can be mentioned to your future employer. I'm assuming you had a good relationship with your boss, have him/her write a recommendation on LinkedIn . Most importantly do not be bitter, it will come through on future interviews and it will impede your job search. You can take solace in the fact that the people who laid you off will probably be slated for execution themselves in a few more weeks.

So now they are doing this under the guise of holiday support coordination??? WOW. This company gets crappier and more underhanded everyday!

I find incredible that there are still people in HPE that believe that their roles are so unique or "critical" that they are exempt of a possibility of a layoff. ANYONE can be kicked out ANYTIME. Don't expect early warnings, or any type of consideration from these people. They always execute in the same matter. The least expected day, you are called into a "phantom" meeting and you are just given a few days to get the h--l out of the Company. No matter how many years; no matter which Division; no matter which Country; no matter your role; no matter if Thanksgiving or Christmas are around the corner... These people don't give a damn s--t. They are executioners... IF you are more than lucky, you'll have a boss that would tell or hint you with a few days in advance, but if they catch her/him, she/he would be in deep trouble. Celebrate that you are getting the h--l out of here!

If it makes you feel better, those reqs probably are frozen or cancelled. I'm not sure why you're surprised though, they will WFR anybody.

Thank God and realize the blessing they handed you. HPE is a horrible place that treats people horribly. Take the money and don't look back. This is from a 25 year true blue HPer that was nailed on the 28 October wave. After the shock, I realize that I am far better off even without a job yet.
