Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Solaris being canned, at least 50% of teams to be RIF'd in short term

All hands meetings being cancelled on orders from legal to prevent news from spreading.

Hardware teams being told to cease development.

There will be no Solaris 12, final release will be 11.4.

Orders coming straight from Larry.

No info on timing yet.

AFAIK, I have confirmed news about solaris being moved to maintenance mode. No word on SPARC. That is most likely a rumor.

Change is the nature of the business, but (speaking from knowledge, rather than rumor) rumors of the Death of Oracle SPARC are profoundly premature & are nothing but hopeful FUD from competitors. If you believe otherwise, just keep watching!

What about storage like the zfssa? There is a plan for the next one to be on sparc.

This is just a BS. No one should take this seriously.

The link was to show the roadmap and no other has been posted outside the company.

There's been speculation for a long time that sparc would be EOL'd

@ @KBEVoB1-qei

you post a link dated from April 2014 if I'm mistaken. I'm not sure it will help oracle employees.

@lwk - tell us more about that new hardware?

It's possible but I doubt intel would put that money into sparc. It will probably be some private investors that will help divest it. I've been at in this for months the end is near for HW and Oracle they will part ways. It's a good model in theory doesn't work in the real market with commodity prices. See intel is going to suffer as well.

I suspect the intellectual property in SPARC will be transferred/sold to Intel for use in future chips. Security of SPARC+Solaris is stronger than Lintel/Wintel.

Will they have RIF in hardware?

iwg - more than a rumor, sources obviously are not going to be named

dvj - top hardware teams are already in the loop and being prepped to transfer to other org, have already cancelled all all-hands meetings to try and contain talk.

What info can you provide to show this is more than just a rumor?

It's why you don't see a sparc/Solaris roadmap on the outside the company past 2017. They likely knew this well in advance.

-1wk that's the point they are ceasing this development at LE's direction.

It makes total sense. The sparc is not selling well. Surprised they let it go on as long as they did.

Not true. There is new SPARC hardware development in process right now.

impacted locations - global, this is a 50% RIF for the entire Solaris/SPARC department, so thousands.

SPARC - it's being EOL'd unless it can turn a profit

software/hardware - news is coming from hardware teams, hardware is getting hit first, all new development is being stopped

roadmap - that was in 2014, Larry decided that he is tired of losing money, it will all go into maintenance mode for support, but no new development according to sources.
