AT&T Mobility gave 30 day notice to over 20% of it's Wireless Technicians that maintain cell sites in Michigan today. Rumor was this is a national surplus.

Are they offering early retirement for the older guys first before laying off the lower guys??
A few Northern Ohio techs have pending job offers for new acceptance procedures but management won't let them accept the position until after the surplus is final. Northern Ohio had 26 techs as of January 1, 2016. 1 passed away, 1 retired and 2 were hit with a surplus with Rumors of 4 more before Q1 2017.
Great call on the 8 billion plus spectrum. Management would have you believe that a broken refurbed phone was a crisis.
@1yfz Randy forked over 8 billion in cash and spectrum in the unprecedented breakup agreement. That's a ton of jobs.
But maybe this sort of cash is set aside to burn over and above projected savings from surplus.
So the outstate techs, the Southern Michigan and Detroit markets don't count for bodies? Either way it's not the last of cuts.
What makes it worse for the AT&T Mobility technicians is through all the Mergers Cingular, Dobson, Centennial, and Alltel most of the original core guys have lost all their seniority. Guys that have been paying dues for years are loosing jobs to these other absorbed techs that have been paying dues less than a year. And 99% of these seasoned 20 year guys couldn't fill a hole if the dirt was next to it. AT&T will be proud when these are the only guys left.
This all started when Leadership decided to mask network alarms so they wouldn't have to pay for repairs. I was a Verizon wireless customer for years and years but switched over when the asshats in Texas said you have to be a wireless customer to get free direct TV. Huge mistake that I regret AT&T wireless service is awful 50% of the places I visit I have no service or hitting 1-2 bars of 4G.
I bet that 4 billion Randy lost on the T-Mobile merger fail would have kept a few jobs.
Actually it was 6 positions, 2 unfilled, 4 techs surplused, plus another in Northern MI. Also 4 techs out of 20 is 20% of the workforce.
It's wasn't 20% of Michigan techs it was 4 technicians to be exact. It was a 30 day notice though because we lost 2 in Northern Ohio. Leadership can't get anything right so take it out on the group making the most money with the least amount of employees.
Not if it's in a labor agreement with the union. The more than 50 rule applies only if there is no other legal binding contract. The contract supersedes the law in this case.
60 Days only applies when it affects more than 50 employees at the same location.
Wireless techs are bargained and all contracts require at least a 60 days notice. I'm not saying this isn't true, I know for a fact the 30 day notice is not correct.
