Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’

Unions were formed to combat the greed of corporations and unfair treatment of workers. Companies today are attempting to return to the past before the unions. More money to line the pockets of the few and screw the workers. Look around at what this country is becoming. It affects us all, union and the lower level management. If you're not one of the CEO's or VP's you're crapped on.

Sure, the cost of production never has any impact on a company's ability to be competitive in the market it's always the evil owners and stock holder and their short term thinking and approach to profit.

Union contracts didn't kill the steel industry, cheap steel from China killed it. Know the facts before you spew nonsense. Besides if American workers can't compete with slave wages and still live in this country. You Union haters got the game all f'd up. This whole American business model is not designed for the long term. It is design for the one percenters moving from quarterly report to the next. Short term thinking for short term profits. As the buying power for Americans are driven down, who will be left to consume the goods and services corporations produce? This plan is self defeating.

Ijw - clearly you do not remember the past. I also grew up in a steel town. Unions had nothing to do with the downfall. Bad investments and the dumping of foreign steel into the U.S. below market value and the government doing nothing about it caused the decline. Need to read up on your history https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Steel

I clearly remember the past. I watched the steel industry having one of the largest plants in the world in the town I grew up in crumble under the weight of bloated union contracts and the unions unable to see damage they were doing only trying to get more and more for themselves. It is amazing to see how much damage they did to industry and their complete denial of it. Yes Verizon is profitable but so was us steel, j&l steel Babcock and wilcocks Bethlehem steel Armco ect, ect, ect. I bet many people never heard of these companies and years from now many may never have heard of Verizon either.

Liberal Democrats have ruined the country. The same ones that your union backs. Vote for the union supporters is the same as voting for transgender bathrooms. It's the same liberals that have ruined the USA. Your political party and backing of it has had a direct impact 16 out of the last 24 years.

Not everyone in the unions support Bernie. I do not. He will bankrupt the country. Hillary will side with the corporations - read https://archive.is/VuLd5 . And Trump? The country is screwed with the choices we have.

A companies profits do not correlate directly to every employees salary. Your value is determined by your function not your contribution to profit. As a call center worker 60-100k is way more than your value. By driving up the rate of pay for glorified call routing you have only yourselves to blaim for offshoring. In truth 80% of the call center function can be easily automated which would serve customers more efficiently and accurately. The union logic make me think of the guy on a corner holding a sign for a sale. This persons job can be automated with a stick. Now field and co work are another story. This is a required function that should garner between 70-130k as the function dictates this rate and cannot be automated.

This is 100% accurate imo. We as a country are turning our backs on each other out of spite and jealousy. If you have more than me I'm going to tear you down is the mentality in this country. I understand not everyone has the ability to stand and fight because of strength in numbers or their job is one that could be replaced with very little training and effort by a company. Unions need to come back for the better of the American middle class. I guarantee the haters here, which a lot of were union at one time would jump to go back to tools.

Are we getting rich working at Verizon? No. Just making a living wage. Better than a lot of others? Sure. But every contract Verizon just wants to take away from that, till we are down to the level of just scraping by, which a lot of people are down to now. 1 billion on profits!

If that's what you believe why do you leave out the condemnation of the corporation. All you need to is read the economist. The lack of retirement funds are a direct cause of flatlined household income has nothing to do with unions. You can close your eyes to the facts most Americans have been conditioned that accepting less.
