Worried about personal safety during strike- will they hit us?

Hi everyone,

I have an EWA and im a bit worried about my personal safety. Ive been told that the unions slash tires and will try to damage our cars (which could get someone killed). Are they going to assault us, spit at us ect?? Im a few months pregnant worried about physical assault. So stressed out. Would appreciate any insight and tips to stay safe.

In 2011 it was dangerous. Please stay safe. It can get very ugly and violent FAST.

I'll work my 6 day work week 12 hour work day because I have to. You want your birthdays off and paid? Cooking classes, etc. paid for? Please. Welcome to the real world. Don't spit on people. We aren't trying to take your jobs and people shouldn't act like savages. We all have bills to pay and families to support. I understand the reasoning behind some of it but don't be cruel to others. Treat others like you'd want to be treated and remember we have no choice.

Maybe you need to check facts, she was the daughter of a manager and a summer intern. As she was trying to drive into the facility, the picketers got in her way. This one person jumped up on her bumper and she flinched and slipped off the brake onto the gas. Once she started moving forward, she stepped on the brake and he slid off hitting his head and ended up passing away. There were never any charges filed, the DA refused to indict, and from statements of multiple witnesses, it was an accident. Sorry for the loss of a life, but it was his actions that ended in his loss of life.

Get some mace. Most of the union losers are just like f---ing rabid dogs. I find comfort in the fact that their money will be in our paychecks for having to deal with this crap.

How does anyone assume an 18 year old did that intentionally? I googled a news story, one report said he got on the hood of her car and she freaked. Regardless, none of us were there and every strike, a handful take their anger out in foul ways and that can be scary. That is why the union agreed that those people who take the picketing to unacceptable levels will be fired. When I found out the red shirt was blasting a non VZ teen, blew my mind.

Actually, It's was a 18 year old daughter of a third liner, that ran over and Killed Jerry Horgan a splicer from Westchester NY on the picket line in 1989. The 18 year old's farther had instructed his daughter to not stop at the gate and "run them over if you have to" this was listened and witnessed by other managers that morning. Jerry left behind a Wife and Two daughters 7 and 4 years old. The Official police report was she hit the gas instead of the brake.

why are we referred to as management employees??? I don't manage anyone. I was offered as tribute. Trust me, if my bosses had to go in my place Id have to worry about having a job. For some of us the exceptions only work when there is a replacement.

Depending on your location and assignment, it can happen. I have seen enough myself and heard enough including sexual harrassment. There are always bad ones. At any rate, it is very stressful and difficult for week or two.

Like someone suggested, talk to your supervisor, they should be able to do something for you. In the meantime, try to find your replacement. Still there are enough people who are stand by for next wave or replacement

Unfortunately Verizon does not give a sh-- about its management employees either. This whole 13 day straight 1 day off EWA is ridiculous.

@GTME6D5-efi thats not entirely true. There were incidents in Astoria, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Long Island. You can speak to the garage bosses who are very accommodating, where they can find something for you to do inside. We had that for a couple of ladies in Queens in 2011.

No one gets assaulted and definitely not a pregnant woman! We are not animals! You are safe. The police will also be around to make sure nobody gets hurt. But the company should not put a person in your condition into such a stressful situation. You should be working an inside EWA. Shame on them.

You should request travel restriction unless your assignment is in the office. Ther are folks who got away from EWA with all kinds of excuses.

Your would be totally excuable. It is not too late to request. If not at least talk to your super for better assignment for your physical condition. Most of union folks are okay but there are always someone who are normal.

Film them if need be. Bring dog biscuits. If they come to you throw the biscuits. They will chase them.

Wear sunglasses. Be nice but try to not give away any emotion. Don't get into it. If they do manage to get in your face, tell them you are pregnant. Most of these guys are married with kids. Tys he women can be even more vile with the language. They are going to try to keep you off balance so that you cant finish a job.

Always walk around the truck before you get in to make sure that there is nothing that can flatten your tires and nothing in the tail pipe. If you see a bunch of red shirted people standing around the job, call it in that you are going to the next one.

If they know that they can upset you, they will. So keep a poker face, as hard as that may be. After a week or so it won't be as bad.

Good luck and stay safe.
