Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Here's a last minute history lesson before all the fun begins...

Whether you are union, non-union, management, i.t., or engineering, one thing is for certain. The only reason you have a lunch break, sick time, retirement, healthcare and vacation time, just to mention a few, is because of ORGANIZED LABOR. If not for organized labor, corporations throughout the U.S. would pay everyone below the executive level minimum wage with no benefits. Don't kid yourself by thinking, "not me, I'm educated, my skills are valuable, I don't benefit from organized labor." Remember that as your career progresses, it is only right that if the company you work for grows in profitability, you too should benefit because of your contributions and you should be rewarded by getting more and not being forced to continually accept less. If we strike, please remember that us "uneducated, unskilled, lazy slobs" are fighting for the very benefits that you enjoy. If we don't fight to keep what we have, not only do we take a step backwards but so do you.

If i get 65 days of sick days, then maybe i also get 6 months of vacation days too! Dont tell my wife and kid. They are still pissed at me for missing everything important in their lives for the last 9 years. I prefer "sleeping in my truck" then be home with my family. PFFFFTTTT!

65 days? Where do you get your info from? I am lost for words to respond to this. I used to work at vz landline. No one gets 65 days except lowblow mckadam and his buddies. Uniom employee gets 10 days. After 2nd day ill you get a "welcome back letter" basically stating you are getting written up and up or including termination. So technically you only get 2 days every 6 months. Now go fk a goat roadent!

retiree healthcare more than $20K per year. What kind of benefit is that? many 'American' managers riffed as they get near the age of 50. Verizon is not the place it once was. I think the stike is good as it will likely lead to some needed changes at the top once investors realize that our basking ridge betters are flailing and failing in their attempts to drive any meaningful shareholder value.

This is what I was told union members receive: and are fighting for:

The co-pay health care costs equate to $1200 per year (not thousands of dollars).

The billions of profit that VZ made, were in spite of the land line group actually losing money for the past 6 - 7 years. Wireless drove the profits.

The suggestion is only to eliminate some of the union sick days. The CWA and IBEW have 65 sick days per year that, if taken non-contiguously, do not require a doctor’s note or taking STD or LTD as an excused absence. That is 13 weeks of undocumented sick time per year.

Don't tell me to join a union .. tell me why these benefits are fair. 65 sick days???

Non-Union , management , exempt employees on EWA should wish for a long strike so they can save money for the RIF they will ABSOLUTELY experience when the strike ends.

RIFs of Non-Union employees ALWAYS help pay for new Union demands

whatever unions did in the past, current unions do nothing for anyone except themselves, and it's only short-term. Work rules, lack of flexibility, and constant worker bitching is why companies with unions are in decline. Verizon Wireless, non-union, brings in the lions share of revenue and profits. And these wireline thugs want credit for it. I guess because I own an iphone I deserve a salary from Apple? Same logic.

Wrong!

I have worked for corporations that never had a union and still have/ had a great salary and benefits. You have done nothing for me. I was all on board with your concerns/cause, but thanks to the few loud mouthed rude union people on this board I can care less. I am sure your union pals love the diminishing support thanks to a few members who insist that being belligerent is the only way to go, and act like they are saving the world. And forget about trying your typical 'you will be layed off' retort. It means nothing, because you have no clue what goes on outside your little world.

The O/P words are true. That is a deeply held belief for me, not just a simple opinion. They say money never sleeps, well neither does greed. Not just Vz, many other companies too would not pay a penny over minimum wage if it were not for organized labor.

No I'm not a Union person, I'm management. Both the CWA and IBEW are invested with loud mouthed Union morons who believe they are, by birthrightt, entitled to a fat well paying job. Nevertheless! " The Truth will out" as the famous Bard, Shakespeare once said and I believe that without organized labor there would be no middle class in this country and that we would, as a country, resemble some third world $hithole like Philippines or India.

Fact, NOT an opinion: unions are declining and as they decline the richest 10% of Americans have increased their share of the countries wealth from 33% in the 1970s to 50% today. Unions are continuing to decline. Why? Today's Union worker doesn't give a damn about what's right. If they were to look in the mirror, staring back at them would be a Vz senior manager. Both mouthing the same word over and over. Me, me, me, me ,me .

derived from the Union.

@ion, your career at Verizon will be short lived and you will find yourself moving from company to company every 3-5 years and having to constantly up root and relocate. From the tone of your post, sounds like you're probably a back stabbing, cock sucker who will probably do anything to get ahead. Who knows, maybe you'll be the next tight T-shirt guy. Good luck being important.

Come on... three years with the company and every year with the company I have received a 6% raise every year(with a 10% raise on my promotion). That bullshit doesn't fly with me, put in the work and it is easy. Unions are for losers and lazy self entitled pricks who think they are owed something for showing up. You are what's wrong with America, take your Participation-award-toting-assout of here...
