Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Is anybody safe at Oracle?

Is there a department or a specific position (outside of the C-suite) where people can spend their days simply working instead of having to split their energy between that and worrying about their jobs?

And if there is, are they hiring? I'd be willing to transfer anywhere for some peace of mind.

Agree, but for some (alot) of people who's been at O. The lead time may be more than 180 days to be presentable. ;-)

Short answer to the actual question posted is: NO.

Long answer is: HELL NO

Oracle is going down big time. MH is gone and spreadsheet-lady is now in charge.

If LE had wanted to rebuild, he would have appointed a new CEO with that kind of background. What does he do, appoints MH, who is known for starving companies to save money and then SC with her spreadsheet skills. It's NOT good. You need a plan to move out of the company and move on.

This of course meant that as soon as you started a new job you were already thinking about the next one, and would start job hunting within a year to two. Failure to do this meant you would eventually be laid off.

Many also change jobs every one or two years as it's often the only way to get even a small raise.

@12HnpKOm-1kle Jesus! HR freaks never take vacations huh? I guess letting the company drown is a "clearly outlined strategy"

People at all ages frequently ask the same question, what if ..., am I safe. They answer is, your question doesn't exist. There is no place to hire you for safe job, but there are many places to hire you for your value. Aka, you are the most valuable person. Make sure you are, that's quite simple.

The last time I had a job where I didn't have to worry about layoffs was 25 years ago at HP. Then CF became the CEO and that was then end of job security. Every place I have worked since then there were constant layoffs or outright firings (so you couldn't claim unemployment). This of course meant that as soon as you started a new job you were already thinking about the next one, and would start job hunting within a year to two. Failure to do this meant you would eventually be laid off. Just look at most of the LinkedIn profiles in your connections list: most people change employers every 2-3 years. Some even change every year. It's the new normal.

That goes double in the technology sector. One day you are AWS and the next you are Burroughs or DG.

If you are looking to bail out I suggest you look as desirable to any potential employers as possible. Renew any certifications you have and gain any new ones you think you have. Get a professional resume writer who knows all the tricks and phrases that will get you noticed. Take some classes to fill out your skill set and help you get yourself into the field/direction you want to go. The technology sector is mercurial and fickle and always has been that way. I am not doing anything near the work I was doing 20 years ago (which was the year 2000, BTW in case you needed reminding), I doubt few are.

You either adjust and adapt or you get left behind. Age doesn't matter. I've seen 60 years olds still on the cutting edge and 40 something still stuck and unable to move forward. Give yourself a plan and a 6 month lead time and when you are ready to go you will stand out above the pack. so start now and don't look back.

That's the problem. The answer to your first question is yes. The answer to your second question unfortunately is no. I'm not an Oracle hater. I served in the military for many years. There are worse places to be 100%.

Why are you staying? There are plenty of jobs out there unless your skills are not in demand then you'll have to fight to keep your job at Oracle.
