Thread regarding CVS layoffs

Holidays and time off?

So this has irked me for some time now. I saw on MyLife about holidays, and it mentioned how getting time off on holidays is good for your well being and your overall health. It states that it’s good to have time off to be with your family, and to be able to rest and recharge. And that CVS understands the importance of these things in overall colleague health and wellbeing.

So then it lists those entities of the company that qualify for reduced holiday schedules, and basically has almost every entity EXCEPT the stores!! Give me a break! If corporate really feels time off around the holidays is good for colleagues health and wellness, then why are the stores not included?

I’d like a DL to comment on why apparently store level colleagues health and well-being don’t matter? Give everyone else some time off but screw anyone who works in a store? And people wonder why employee morale is so low.

This is my holiday season at my store. My 2 shifts refused to work any shift on Thanksgiving and they both demanded the entire weekend off. They deemed their families more important than mine. Fine. Contacted A&C. A&C told them both they both can’t be off the entire 4 day weekend. I told them I will work Thanksgiving all day, but off Wed and Friday. Now one shift is off Th,Fr,Sat. The other is off Sat,Sun,Mon. A&C told them take it or leave it. They accepted. We closed on Xmas. I already told them both I am taking off every holiday in 2020.

@11Ya5EwU-6aif... I agree with your assessment, BUT shouldn’t ALL store level colleagues get time off to be with family at holidays?

Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday this year. Company expectations are that Store Managers work the days leading up to Christmas to maximize sales and profits. The company expectation is also that the next season is set by Saturday that same week. If store managers abide by these expectations the 1 day that they get off that week is Christmas Day and potentially Saturday if they can get their set done. Store Managers get paid for 4 work days the week of Christmas but typically work 6 so for those who say Store Managers taking Christmas Day off is not fair please consider that most of us hardly see our families the entire week of Christmas and usually the week before as well. We also lose our holiday pay because we are actually working 6 days and there are not enough budgeted hours for us to take a comp day in another week.

A lot of RX’s are either closed on holidays or have very reduced hours. So what’s the point of keeping the front store open on holidays if we are now a healthcare company and the “healthcare part” (RX) is closed?

There is absolutely no reason to be open on thanksgiving or christmas...there are emergency rooms and urgent cares open with pharmacies located in them...i call on every employee to call in on Thanksgiving and Christmas!! I will be!!

@11Ya5EwU-2pya... Well said! And you hit on a good point. And that is the idea that working on a holiday usually means extra money, and yet I venture a guess that most people would prefer the day off, since it’s a holiday and most places are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not that the extra pay doesn’t come in handy, but has the company ever given thought to what store employees want? Your right, how come WE don’t get a day off but the rest of the company does?

Pharmacy manager here and I just want to vent on this topic.
My scheduler is such a bitter woman. She gives me push back every time I ask for a sick day or vacation.
For thanksgiving week I’m working 40 hours. And I’m working on thanksgiving.
I asked her to cover my Saturday.
And she said she couldn’t cover it.
Her words “just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean you get an extra day off!”

So I’m working the Holiday, sure I’m making extra money, but I’d prefer time off.

But apparently, CVS doesn’t care about store level employees!

Not a good sign if even DL’s are in the dark about things...

@11Ya5EwU-1yoy... That’s a great idea! Spread the load out, so nobody does too much. Except once again everyone is missing and/or ignoring the elephant in the room. And that is, how CVS corporate can justify saying how important it is for company colleagues to get time off around the holidays to be with family and rest, and conveniently leave store employees off that list.

When I was SM I scheduled every manager (including myself) a short 3-4 hour shift and they got to pick the shift they wanted. It was fair, made the best of a bad situation and everyone seemed fine with it.

@11Ya5EwU-1opb... I agree with your assessment of how to handle holidays like Christmas, except that still doesn’t answer the question of how corporate can justify NOT including store level colleagues in the holiday time off company policy, after they admit time off is good for your health and well-being. Your health doesn’t matter if you’re a store employee?

It’s ironic in this current climate of payroll cuts that corporate is still willing to pay us double-time on Christmas.

Salary Store managers should not be working these holidays. Not because they’ve “earned the right” or because they’re the boss. But because there is absolutely no financial benefit. That is the way I have sold it to my team for years and they actually want to work because they are excited for the opportunity for OT. When you tell a full timer they will be making triple time (factor in the 8 holiday pay) on Christmas they volunteer. I don’t force anyone to work. We talk about it. I tell them what the store needs for coco and ask who can help. Plan, communicate and you will have an easy time covering

@11Ya5EwU-1uaa... I know, but not all stores. And it’s hypocritical of this company to see and understand the importance of colleagues getting time off around the holidays to be with families and rest, rejuvenate, etc., and yet not include store level employees as well. What that tells me is that if you work in a store, corporate says you don’t need a day off because we don’t care about you, we only care that the store is open.

Why would a store manager schedule themself off and yet make their team work? Wouldn’t that make them a hypocrite? Let’s be honest... ALL employees need time for family at holidays. It’s a fair question for the company to understand the importance of time away from work to be with family around the holidays, and yet not include store level employees as well. I’m not looking for a week off, but seriously would it k–l corporate even if all we did was close for Thanksgiving and Christmas? We at the stores, don’t even get one day, and yet everyone else in the company gets reduced holiday schedules? To not include ALL colleagues in time off around the holidays but only certain people, is discriminatory.

I am still waiting for a DL to explain how exactly corporate comes to the idea that store level employees do not need any time off on holidays but the rest of the company does.
