Raise and Bonus structure severely broken for L1-L2

I wonder if companies like Facebook, Google and Apple are better at tying compensation to individual contributions and corporate goals? I think I already know the answer...

OP, good question with no real answers. You have hit a nerve which the rank and file have exposed their ignorance of how the Company is run. Their perception is what they know yet they don’t don’t see or care to understand how the Company is run. I love a few of your responses to the haters. One statement that does stick out is “we’re all employees” regardless of our position.

The discussions that you see in posts like this is what have this company in the position it is today. Too much dog fighting between coworkers. From my experience, this company don’t promote from the inside. And that is hurting the business. Very knowledgeable and honest people on the lower ranks while the majority of the “management” and upper ranks are filled with people that don’t even have a clue of what telecommunications is. They are lost. Slim opportunity to move up in at&t.

It’s funny how you acknowledge techs putting cones around their vehicles.

Most mangers I see that drive & park in a company vehicle are either too lazy or think the policies don’t apply to them. They don’t put the magnets they are required too on the front and back. Techs at least know how to follow local & company policies.

There are intelligent people that wear a collar and no collar. It’s just there is more nepotism, no boots on the ground experience and s— ups on the white collar side of the equation. The financial business news has talked about how there are too many chiefs and not enough Indians for decades at the utility companies.

Clearly AT&T should be dumping everyone with a "X Member of the Tech Staff" position and replacing them by promoting field/outside techs. According to most of the posts on this site, it's the field techs that know everything.

Who needs advanced degrees and JNCIE-SP/CCIE-RS certs when you got a guy that knows how to put a few cones around his van corners.

"How could you progress and move up in the food chain in Att ? From craft to L1. From L2 to L3 and so on. What it takes? No one knows at Att........ "

I did, but in the mid-late 90's before it was AT&T. And when I started as a field tech in wireless, there was no Union. Admittedly it is tougher today.

" tying compensation to individual contributions and corporate goals"

What is that supposed to mean? Do you believe that you are getting market rate compensation for your skills? If not leave and get a raise from another company.

It’s funny how everyone feels like their the only ones that do anything around here... Just wait till you are without the other workgroups you ridicule and wonder if they work and you end up having to do your job and theirs. Then that will make for a way better work environment! Not!

I’m a systems tech. I don’t understand why I even have an L1. Everything is the tech’s responsibility these days. I order my own toold, parts, pack, ship , I schedule my own projects, I self dispatch and handle everything customer related on my own. I don’t ever see my manager. He just runs reports and reads the monthly MTP to us. Our managers used to pay customers visits and converse with them. Consult with them. Not anymore. They just run reports. I need a manager to manage the workload but that doesn’t happen anymore. I don’t someone someone who just tells me what my numbers are for the month.

L1-L2s are not field managers in this context. These are most of the people working in offices. We are not “managers” except in title only so as to keep us from unionizing and making us exempt from overtime, etc... we get hosed all the time. Yes, there is zero growth opportunity in these roles. Many of us can crush it with sales, cost savings, etc... and still get nothing for it. By crushing it, I mean making or saving the company $millions that’s documented officially. Still crickets when it comes to a raise, big bonus or promotion. My advice, treat this place like a paycheck and find something else. Don’t go above and beyond, it’s not appreciated. You’ll just find yourself doing way more than you should and stuck in place because they need you doing what you do so the big bosses make their bonus. Yeah, done with that. I only do enough now to earn my keep. Fair days labor commensurate with my compensation.

Its even worse than that. How could you progress and move up in the food chain in Att ? From craft to L1. From L2 to L3 and so on. What it takes? No one knows at Att........

Hilarious how people who have never held L1-L2 titles are downvoting this. Most L2s are NOT area managers for craft but I mean hey its hard to understand when you think all there is to AT&T is field Operations. Wake up, your just an employee like us, however your wages go up regardless of how poorly you f%ck up.

We are not Facebook. Apple or facebook. We are a company lost in a conglomeration of legacy technogies, pretending to be a tech company. Bonuses should reserved for Top performers.
But where are they? as far as I can see everyone claims to be a top performer, sooo funny!

L1& L2 need no bonus, they dont provide any benefit to the company bottom line, they shoukd be paying AT&T for kepping them employed.

I was a L1.

The bonus structure is completely confusing. Used to be we got a flat 10% of salary bonus. Easy to understand.

Then they changed it to getting some portion of the annual bonus quarterly. Which was fine, but then it never was clear how much you were getting at annual review time.

Then they did this crazy thing where you’re still getting “10%”... but 2% of that was based on job performance, and some other broad factors largely out of the individual’s control.

Oh, and the ATT Board could, in theory, decide not to award bonuses or raises on any given year.

Totally nuts.
