When They Smell Blood in the Water...

This past Thursday - August 22nd - there was a grand opening of a Costco in Sharpsburg, GA. This would normally not be worthy of mention but in this case, Sam's Club #4789 happens to be right next door. In my experience, this is the first time I've ever seen a Sam's and a Costco next door to one another. I've seen them as close as a quarter mile away, in a much more densely populated area and thought that was pretty close. This is altogether something different. #4789 is a medium volume sales club that relies very heavily on weekend business and, like most other clubs, is struggling mightily to adjust to the new way of doing things that the company has adopted recently. The average associate inside the club is somewhere between ignorant and oblivious as to what this move by Costco entails. Do they smell blood in the water? Do they believe, after doing their market research, that the area just 45 minutes southwest of Atlanta is ready to support three (there's a B'S in Newnan about 15-20 minutes away) wholesale store chains? It is true that the area is growing fairly well but is that growth really enough to rationalize a Costco, too? My feeling is that Costco knows that Sam's is teetering and they've known this for quite some time. I've also heard it echoed repeatedly over the years that they're so in tune with what is going on with Sam's, they often know well enough beforehand, what virtually all their moves are going to be before Bentonville has even made them. If that's the case, then things could get very interesting. They also opened another new Costco the same day up in Loves Park, IL which happens to be about 15-20 minutes away from Club #8297 in Rockford. That location is notable because Rockford is an area where a great deal of money has left town over the last 20 years and gone north - right in the direction of where they put the Costco. I'm familiar enough with this area, too, and I NEVER thought Costco would plant a flag there. So this is two examples of what seem like daring moves by this company's main rival and it tells me that there's a deathclock ticking on two clubs, one of which is over thirty years old was pretty high volume as recently as five or six years ago. The other club has only been open for around seven years total and now they've got a new neighbor in a setting that was nothing but empty fields on the adjacent three corners.

Tick-tock for 4789 and 8297.

@1gzd - Applying a little reading comprehension would be great move on your part. I said, "the first time in my experience...", which means I've never seen a Sam's and a Costco literally next door to one another. I didn't say that it's never been done. You're going to have to do better than that to convince me that my opinions are wrong. Oh, and before I forget, Clearwater is a much more densely populated area than either of those I was referring to in my post.

I also think you are correct. Sam's Club dropped the ball on two major components. They started catering to the wrong clientele, middle to low income. Letting welfare in the door. It k–led them and now there trying to change back and it's not working. They lost the middle to high income to Costco years ago. That's why they have conceded to Costco. On line retail , they dropped the ball on this also. In order for Walmart to survive, they have to do something with Sam's Clubs. Sell and convert . Walmart is there main concern right now . Time is ticking.

Have any of you ever been in a Costco? Become a member and learn from the competition. Ive worked for Sams 9 years and been shopping at Costco for about 15+ years. Im not impressed with Costco, prices are going higher, they stop selling items also . They have turnover to. There are new people every time I go. We do copy some of there ideas and Im sure they copy some of ours. A smart business doesn`t have to reinvent the wheel but improve and modify to fit the needs of the company. If you like Costco so much , buy the stock have the best of both worlds.

Costco moved into our city of 90,00 17 years ago and within a short time both our membership income and store sales we’re cut in half

Costco built within 10 miles of my club a couple of years back. It cut our knutz off.

Agreed. Writing is on the wall. Sams is now trying to compete with Amazon. They're giving up on copying Costco. Can't keep up..

Would probably just apply for a job if Costco built next to my club. Problem solved 👍🏼

@gcv - Let me guess, you're situated in a location that is urban and otherwise upscale, or higher density upscale suburban. If so, you're ok for now. There's enough business there for both stores.

And how is your club handling the changes? Are you guys knocking it out of the park?!?

There is a Costco across the street from the club I work at. It has been there 10 years, my club has been here for 18 years.

@kuz - We're going in a direction where Sam's Club as we know it, will no longer exist. They will gradually close all the stores and take the Sam's Club name, as an online members only wholesale retailer. Many of the stores will be converted to fulfillment centers just as they did with 10 or 12 of the clubs they closed in January 2018. They're basically going to concede the brick and mortar end to Costco, who has been winning the battle convincingly over the years anyway, and for good reason. Costco is much more attractive to higher income shoppers, who also have the time to physically shop. However, it should also be noted that Costco still has to throw it's hat in the ring online with the same urgency, so as to not fall behind, which they seem to have a handle on. We're watching the death of the traditional retail business model, so grab some snacks and figure out your next move if you're bills are being paid with a job in this industry.

You are spot on. There is a Costco right next door to our club in CA. I believe our club will be on the chopping block soon. We had a co-manager, who was a literal joke with breathe that would k–l a lion, just get promoted to club manager another club. They used to have a regional office here but that has pretty much been dissolved except for one guy who will probably be gone soon too. Sams did not take the necessary steps to compete against Costco rather than try to be them. Now we have to totally change our direction to try and survive. What worked for us 20 years ago will not work now, unlike costco who has remained pretty much the same and added value/changes over the years while still committed to its employees & members. Sam's has more closures to come. The 1/4 left will be Sam's Club Now locations for the time they try and survive.
