Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Feeling underpaid?

I have a friend who has a 30% higher pay in a competing company doing the same job as I do here. I've been thinking about asking for a raise, but I'm afraid I'll just make my life more complicated.

I left and took a job for 80% more after fighting for anything more than 2-3% raises for years. I was also surprised how much better the culture is at the new job. It was like that story about the frog being boiled - I didn't realize how bad it was getting until I got out.
Recently I've seen people still left behind at Nike getting new job titles to throw them a bone and try to keep them around. Hopefully the title change is good resume padding for them.

Good point @1hgf. Having a cool campus is of little benefit when nobody wants to be on-site to begin with. The pandemic permanently changed how people view work. For all the talk about “collaboration” there’s very little work done at Nike that legit requires a physical presence. The last two years have proven that. Nike has never understood that collaboration is more of a mindset than an actual physical thing.

I am SO dreading going back to campus. I actually get depressed when I think about it. Not sure how long I’ll last when that point comes. I’ve discovered working remotely fits my lifestyle much better than dragging myself into an unproductive office every day. Even the idea of waking up everyday and doing the get ready for work and commute routine seems comically antiquated now. For me the process of getting ready for work and transporting myself there adds about 2 unnecessary hours to my work day. Watch for a new round of resignations about 2 to 3 months after the return to campus when people fully realize “This suks and I want my time back. I’m going to start looking for a new job where I can exclusively work from home.”

I almost feel for Nike. A company that is tied culturally, financially, legally to this community and albatross of a campus - at a time where “cool campus” is like no. 10 on the list of things top caliber people are looking for - how are they going to compete, as a “tech company” lol, for even tier 2 talent?

We’ll you do know- part of your benefits are the campus! For those who comply! Isn’t it weird that the non-v can go to the employee store, which is part of campus, but they can’t work on campus! Hmmm- me thinks the science is confusing!

Nike is a strange company. They’d rather let good people walk out the door than pay those people what they’re worth. That’s exactly what too many of the good people are now doing too. Every couple weeks I’ll email someone and it bounces back to me. My first thought is always “Whelp there goes another one.” JD is performing a magic trick. He’s making the numbers look good while the culture quickly disintegrates. That’s the problem with CEO’s who come from the consulting world. Because Wall Street doesn’t care about corporate culture neither do these CEO’s. And it shows.

@ztc is 100% correct. I asked for a raise and got the standard “You’re already above the median for your job code.” Never mind that I was working far above my actual job code and had a consistent record of strong performance.

So I did what any self-respecting person would do. I quit. Went to another company and my pay immediately increased by almost 25%. Not only that but my entire life became considerably less stressful. Like I had finally jumped off the hamster wheel. It wasn’t until I left Nike that I fully realized how much I had been taken advantage of. In a weird way denying me that pay raise was the nicest thing Nike ever did for me. I’m now in a higher paying, much less stressful job that I actually enjoy. Nike’s loss was my gain.

C’est la vie.

Don’t bother, they’ll just say that you “above the median for your job code” and at best give you like 3%… you’re better off spending your energy looking for a new job, ask your friend for a referral
