Little work or no work at all will get done next week

Are we supposed to cancel all work-related meeting next week?

This may be an unpopular response, but I'm planning to continue with my work up until the last minute and will try to have my work in a good place where it can be taken up by others on the project in the event that I'm let go. Three basic reasons.

  1. The concept of Ihsan; of doing every single thing in life with beauty; to the best of one's ability.
  2. Loyalty to the team. The people that I've been working with who don't get cut will be floundering if I don't position them for success.
  3. The concept of work, of being productive, is one of the things which brings meaning to the human experience. It's not at the top of the list, but it's very fulfilling. Yes, it is often high pressure and painful and unhealthy. But some of the time, it's not. It is something that we need for our own self-esteem and peace of mind and not just in a transactional way for the money.

I get that not everyone feels the same way, but this is just how I'm wired.

It’s absurd that we’re expected to deliver work early next week. So unfair for “servant leadership” to expect us to just carry on. If they had any real compassion, they would adjust the deadlines. They are completely disconnected from the work and what we’re going through. This is what happens when the rat kings and queens only pay lip service for years in the corporate rat race

Nike hasn't taken control of peoples lives, they are just the enablers. People are comfortable earning a good paycheck for doing work that arguably is incredibly easy, even when it's complicated. While meetings and designs and powerpoints are mentally draining to do, just try doing physical labor for a quarter of the paycheck. The downside to this life is that we are beholden to corporations to provide these cushy jobs. They don't do it out of the goodness of their hearts, they do it out of greed. Part of that greed means layoffs when the greed needs them. Saying people are beholden to Nike isn't really accurate, they are beholden to the white collar corporate dr-g.

I’m not doing sh-t they better hope I open my laptop. I do not care what this company is trying to achieve. If they wanted work to continue they would’ve just made sure to lay everyone off between Monday and Tuesday. Do a blitz it’s only ( ridiculous actually )740 people, ain’t like they care anyway put all 740 in a meeting tell them they’re being laid off . Brownie points if Johnathan delivers it , and then say we will follow up throughout the week with next steps individually . It rips off the damn band aid, this BS approach of being private to allow people to process is just that BS . The entire process has been a miss , why “care” now

Yeah, our vp called a meeting Friday to let us know the most recent important thing next week is there are still deadlines and we still need to be working, layoffs like this are just what nike is.

If we really couldn’t work, let our managers know.

So comforting and reassuring, such an amazing grasp on human emotions.

I’ve been with nike for 13years and somehow the company just keeps getting more toxic, but just goes in a different direction for toxicity went from the good old boys club that was at least focused on sport and innovation to whatever we are now.

This being said I still don’t want to work anywhere else, I just want us to actually do better sometime, vs saying lots of words then doing the same toxic things over and over again

Hey Jon Don the con, you wonder why your business performance is in the toilet? You think maybe the constant threat of layoffs might be part of the problem? You are getting bad advice from your PR and HR team. Nobody wants to work hard for a company in constant chaos and disarray.

I work for a manager who is planning on driving, driving, driving us this week ... like always. (More work for them to take credit for.)

Praying that I am let go tomorrow. Doesn't look that way tho.

@zop this is a prime example of allowing yourself to be run over by your employer.

At the end of the day, YOU dictate your work life balance. Work is transactional. They give some, you give some. They take some, you take some. They won't pull their punches, land some of your own. These blows are self inflicted by the ELT and its the only way irresponsible manglement can be held accountable.

You don't go up to your leaders and say this, you just do it. Business relationships must be nurtured like any relationship. Make them earn it.

Crazy to see how obsessed people are over their work life and caught up with everything other than their mental well being. Looks like Nike has take full control of your life, now is the time to let go. You don’t owe them anything, forget about the next meeting and deadline for the week and enjoy something more important for once.

Keep in mind you may not be here or your job may be different. Sure do some work but don’t work super hard as it may be in vain. People always think it won’t be me but it has to be someone. Your chances are higher as you get older, higher or happen to be in a place that is targeted.

Why you wanna work hard and make the ELT more money off your labor. Slow down, do nothing, inflict pain. All deadlines are all made up.

@zop - mine too, I work directly with global leadership. But let’s remember that if we always get things done despite feasibility challenges and ignore our needs to avoid ever saying no because we’re scared, leadership won’t lighten expectations and the ‘do or die trying’ culture will continue.

I don’t understand how you all can take a week and get nothing done. My team has so much work, deadlines, handovers, presentations. There is no adjustment in expectations or deadlines.

Dude, yes. The fact that this is even a question is wild. The company won’t fail if we all take a week to process, our wellness week is a good example of that. Leadership should have given us permission to rest and process the past year of anxiety with CONVICTION. But they’re leaving it up to interpretation which is a huge miss on an easy opportunity to shift the culture in the right direction.
