Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Now is a terrible market to find a job

Now Is a terrible market to find a job. Unemployment numbers are off because people have been unemployed for over a year and no longer counted. Recruiters are being spammed with ai applications so it’s impossible to apply and be seen. The process has everything in the world thrown at it- 9 rounds, essay questions and business cases, and everyone ghosts.

@oqw+1rmrwflX makes a good point. Think before you leap, folks.

By referencing the official definition of unemployment, I was trying to counter the misinformation in this thread. Even the other unemployment definitions (U5-U6) don't rely on participation in unemployment insurance to calculate their rates.

@1lna+1rnZGGtD Unemployment as a statistic is sorta of a mess IMO.

First, there are many different definitions of it. What you are referring to is called U3. There are 6 different measures of unemployment in the US U1-U6. Here is an article of the differences. Because knowing the difference really changes the discussion.

https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/080415/true-unemployment-rate-u6-vs-u3.asp

For the last decade or so U6 is becoming a "better" measure according to some economists since more and more people are under-employed (more gig work) or have been unemployed for longer than U3 measures (structural unemployment). So the argument is U6 is a better measure of the "slack" in the market. So while U3 may be 3.68 the current U6 is over 7%. https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t15.htm

@gbz+1rnZGGtD Your comment basically says people having trouble getting a job must be bad at what they do or have unreasonable expectations. Really? Been looking since November and all that exists for someone unable to. I’ve is a 50% paycut and likely a complete pivot and abandoning a lifelong career.

And no, I haven’t worked only at Nike. Go out and see for yourself, and have some compassion. And I do agree the unemployment numbers are wrong, there are literally dozens of sources to back this up

Classification as unemployed in no way depends upon a person's eligibility for, or receipt of, unemployment insurance benefits.

There is no requirement or question relating to unemployment insurance benefits in the monthly Current Population Survey.

If you are good at what you do and have reasonable expectations of a new job/employer finding a new role is not difficult (even in a small market like PDX). If you have spent the majority of you career behind the berm at the swoosh the real world may be a shock to maneuver. There is a world outside of Nike, go explore it first before diving head first into a job search. It may be a shock to your system at first...but eventually everyone has to move on from Nike.

@ofl+1rnZGGtD they are removed from the calculation if they no longer qualify for unemployment benefits. There is no way to "measure" those who are still looking but aren't regularly checking in with the state to report they are looking in exchange for benefits. The true employment rate is 24%,

@gdw+1rnZGGtD same. Everyone I know who was laid off from Nike in June, November and December are all still looking.

@zbn+1rnZGGtD The job market is bad everywhere. I’ve been applying for roles anywhere and everywhere for months with both adidas and nike leadership experience and can barely get a recruiter call. It’s not just Portland.

Don't be a loser! Stop looking for a job! Create your own job. Become an independent contractor to provide any product or services needed by consumers and companies in general. Think big, dream big. You have no time to wait for things to happen. Sending a resume somewhere more likely will be tossed in a garbage can or disappear somewhere in the cloud. Change fields if you have to. The most important thing is to "exit" mainstream. This current and uncertain economy demands reinventing the wheel. That reinventing must start with you, your thinking, your lifestyle, your expenses, your use of time, simplification, reducing expenses, doing a budget, sticking with your plan that must include your family. Think hard! The odds are against you if you submit your freedom and life to an "employer". You ought to maximize your effort into finding buyers for your products or services. The sky is the limit after you break the barrier from dependency to independency, from ordinary to extraordinary...

@ofl+1rnZGGtD unemployment only counts people on unemployment, after 26 weeks you stop being counted in the numbers.

The jobs being added are part time low level jobs and the ones being taken away are white collar management and mid management.

Add that to the ghost job postings etc there are plenty of articles backing up this is a terrible job market

Not many equivalent level jobs available in Portland maybe. But Portlands a small city and a footnote on the West Coast.

The unemployment rate was 3.7% in January, nearly a 20 year low. I think the official measure counts you as unemployed if you have looked for work in the last four months. I don't think people are removed from the calculation if they have been employed for more than a year, unless they stopped looking for work. Some sectors may have a higher unemployment rate than 3.7%, but there are plenty of jobs in America.
