Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

For those laid off this week: some things to hekp

Advice from someone laid off in December.

  1. Nike will send you everything in writing in the next 24 hours
  1. They will send your severance paperwork in about 2 weeks, you need to read it carefully and sign it to be paid
  1. You don’t file unemployment until you’re off payroll, so not for 60 days. You can collect while in your severance period. Do it!
  1. They send you a box to send back your laptop, samples, other things, it’s extremely easy. Don’t pull files off your computer or they will find out and you may need to bring personal devices in, or you might be fired and risk your severance. Make a list of all the documents you want and they will send them in a BoX link
  1. There are special emails to ask questions and they are extremely kind and helpful. Try to be nice to them even when you’re stressed out, it helps!
  1. You may have gotten offboarding support? Ask about it. They help you with your resume, LinkedIn, interviewing, etc. it’s a huge help and mental lift. Activate it as soon as you’re ready, you have like 6 months to even activate it
  1. You have to make a list of all the personal items you want so try and remember that while it’s fresh in your mind
  1. Over the next few weeks you may feel panicked. This will pass, get out and move your body and it will help.
  1. The market SU-KS right now but finding a job is possible. Take time to get in a good spot mentally before reaching out, you’ll show up better and things will move quickly
  1. Join the alumni network! They’re amazing.

Another tip for those that have been laid off... your health care flexible spending account is fully funded for the year on Jan 1, you can submit claims for reimbursement for any medical expenses that occur before your final date of employment. We were able to use all of our annual FSA (~$3000) even though my last official day with Nike was in Feb.

@eyp+1ramN8Ft I think the package is standard, so harder to negotiate. I know a few who tried and failed. Many people from other companies told me to do it but I had a lawyer ready my paperwork who also advised there are two ways to negotiate and both close the door on future work with the company. I chose to keep the door open.

Thanks for sharing this! It’s very helpful and honestly after some of the toxic posts of the last few days, I’m glad folks like you are still out there. One question I had was whether anyone has negotiated anything in their severance? Do they even entertain that?

Can someone put the OP in charge of HR? We are all adults, providing this level of transparency is the type of care and consideration I would expect from my employer. We can handle the truth!

What are some Nike alumni networks one would recommend?

This is really good advice esp nos. 6 and 8. If you get access to outsourcing coaching and related services including on line classes - take advantage of this. I initially dismissed, thought I was above it, and then warmed up to it. Was fantastic. Learned a lot. I think was Right Management. Expensive package and nike paid for. Also - exercise and take a month to clear your mind. As the OP says, don’t rush and get your mind right. This will all pass and months from now you will find yourself in a good place. Nike in the past has provided very fair packages.

In the midst of chaos, this post has been very helpful. Unfortunately whatever happening right now, we have no control over. I can bet each one of us gave our best. Take all the good learnings and good friends we made and try to move on.

Thank you for taking time and sharing these.
