Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

So backwards

if you want to know how all of this works, here’s the truth. Finance establishes a financial target that needs to be hit and then the drones in HR scramble to figure out who needs to go. Often it’s VPs and above deciding your fate. They have zero idea what you actually contribute to the company and often could care less.

They then try to figure out the new org structures and the marketing spin around it. It never starts with the actual strategy and needs of the business. Meanwhile everyone remaining will spend the next several weeks/months trying to get organized, while the business continues to struggle.

At the end of the day, all employees are merely line items on some spreadsheet. As the original commenter stated, HR tells the VP to achieve a number. It's cold. It's clinical. It's anti-septic. This is corporate America and Nike is now solidly a part of Corporate America. No amount of fancy gyms, employee discounts, coffee carts, campus eateries, or cool art museum / Hall of Fame like workspaces can disguise that.

@xyg that is true. My best friend at work got let go yesterday. I used to make light fun of him because he seemed congenitally incapable of getting a CFE rating below “highly successful”.

Didn’t matter when the layoff hammer fell. With that layoff Nike just lost one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. I’m still in shock that Nike would push someone like that out the door.

CFEs are just CYA for the company. It's not for your growth it's protection for the company. HR is all about shielding the company from liability.

Just goes to show what a scam the CFE & performance ratings are. When it comes down to it your skills, effort & job performance don’t mean anything. Do just enough to not get fired because the next round of layoffs (And there will be many more don’t kid yourself) any extra time you dedicate to this withering brand won’t save you.

Every company does this. Vps decide. Hr processes the paperwork.

I guess it’s time to accept this as the new normal. Every company goes through a churn
