Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Hopeless job market

I'm in tech and have been looking for a job for five months and gotten no offers. I have not even had a real interview in six weeks. Applied to both remote and non-remote jobs.
I'm facing a layoff soon. Anyone else experiencing this?

@tpn+1tFmfmPb If you're getting rejected that quickly, you're being rejected by AI. It means you need to make sure that your next resume has important key words listed in the original posting (synonyms won't work, has to be the exact same word).

It takes one month of looking for every $10k in salary. Network and look before you get let go.

Great advice - spend 10 years becoming an expert in data science … ummm okaaay . That’s helps us all now

@glv hasn't looked at postings lately. A "deep understanding of a specific area" means you're a one-trick pony who is useless. These days for entry-level jobs you need deep knowledge of multiple domains and 4+ years of work experience.

You're obviously quite comfortable in your WF silo.

Get back to us when you're actually looking for work.

One of the many downsides of AI which seems to be overlooked is that with fewer workers earning income, and especially tech workers, fewer people will be paying into the tax system. This isn't sustainable.

With AI advancing so quickly and on so many fronts... Any CEO paying attention wants their organization to be lean, lean, lean. Skeleton crew organizations with a limited physical footprint.

Been to a friend's children's graduation, and realized majority of the graduating bodies will be on some form of H-1B, H4, or OPT visa.

Clearly schools are getting paid, but most of us will not have our jobs and we already have 15+ yr of experience.

There needs to be an career support organization for 40+ year old technology workers who are in dire straits. A network of like minded individuals who can talk things through and make a plan on how to move forward. Rumination is a ki-ler and absolutely avoidable.

Got my undergrad degree, worked in tech for 20+ years. Layoff happening in 3...2...1....

If I don't get a new job through my network, I am preparing to work a couple jobs to tread water financially for the time being. Gig jobs, restaurant work, Craigslist jobs, etc.

Spending more attention on my health (exercise, diet, dr visits) and grabbing any chance I can to learn something new and see if the old brain will shoot sparks again. Doing anything possible to help maintain confidence in trying times.

Hopefully this bottom we are in won't last for too long. There is a lot of great work yet to be done in tech, lot of opportunities. We are living in a historic sea change, so every freaking day it requires applying duct tape to leaks to keep afloat.

I’m applying now, but likely won’t be laid off until next year. Not sure what quarter, but started looking and only received one call from the state. I applied for at least 20 jobs and with this job looking at a pay cut of 30k. So be careful what you wish for - wanting to get laid off unless you’re on the cusp of retirement. Fintech/banking is saturated more competition and they want younger folks. All timing if I had applied during COVID likely would’ve had better chances.

I've applied to 300 jobs, less than 10 screens, less than 5 interviews, zero offers

Tech is a jobs wasteland for now. All the crazy money that came with Covid is gone and corporations are trying to figure out how much they can cut while still remaining operational. Once the market changes and AI crashes and burn, things will change.

I've been reading predictions that EOY the corporate mindset on AI is likely to change as they'll realize chatbots and LLMs can't really replace a human being, only help them.

Yep,
I talked with my old boss who got the axe and it took him about a year to land a comparable job.

This is a well known issue for those who've been jobless in tech and finance. It's not uncommon for those who've been laid off to not land a new job for six months or even a year. This isn't fake fear mongering. It's actual reality.

Have you tried any contracting agencies? My coworker keeps getting offers at other companies that will lead to full time positions. She even got a call for a contracting position here at wells 100% remote go figure!

Post ID: @tly+1tFmfmPb not sure where you are getting your stats from but WF interns are making 36 an hour and will be hired in the rotational program at around 90k a year straight out of college without any prior work experience. They have the money they are just investing it in the future and not doing anything for there current employees besides donuts.

I’m applying while being employed noting my days are numbered and I’m getting rejected literally the next day saying candidates have skills over me when I unequivocally am qualified. Oh but I’m 55. It’s like it’s designed to bo-g experienced workers. DEI and migrants and India outsource are the new norm. I’m sorry it’s horrible. It’s by design to enslave us and have us dependent on state.

Masters-level CS graduates are taking $21/hour helpdesk jobs because there is literally nothing out there right now. Might be time to skill up in something else.
