nike is beyond saving. the board ousting mp was the final touch but nike was disintegrating for years before that. extremely political and trying to find people who earned their position through meritocracy is like finding a needle in a haystack

For those saying “Nike is doing fine financially”, no it isn’t. Normal Nike rev growth for decades was upper single digit. We are no longer growing like that. If we keep stagnating with low growth layoffs will be a far more frequent occurrence. We’re already seeing that. Nike has had more lay offs in the last five years than in the five decades prior. Think about that for a minute.

Nike started having hype issues nearly ten years ago when it brought in JJ and her “retail” background with the dictate to flood the market with the hot Basketball and Jordan shoes.

@1exz Nike may have been doing better growth wise but at what cost? the culture wasn’t necessarily better for many. All the me too stuff was condoned by the last leadership team so please don’t think that was the beacon of promise for LT.

Also many companies (see coke) shift from growth to dividends companies, maybe this is just a new stage of Nikes maturity

@1tmd+1qT3V59U Four years at Nike. Got swept into the group as part of a reorg. You can tell by their LinkedIn profiles. And if they are in CA, high chance that they are Kohls people. The people in my group were pretty open about knowing each other from their Kohls days. Lots of "At Kohls, we did this". They would talk among each other using terminology that was specific to Kohls, as if the rest of us didn't exist. Definitely felt a vibe of exclusion.

@1exz+1qT3V59U how long were you at Nike? There is a Sr Dr in my department that knows nothing and does not even have relevant knowledge. He is often absent, has background in HR and his job is to just cause drama on top of creating shiny power points! How can I check if he is Kohl? Does it say on their LI????

@1rpu+1qT3V59U @1aif+1qT3V59U The culture matters and fish rots from the head. Once JD and RL were brought in, everything went downhill. Kohls people everywhere in VP and Sr. Director positions. I was a manager and I didn't want to give a Kohls employee a promotion. The guy didn't deserve it. My manager, a Kohls person, didn't like that. He pushed me out. I was replaced by a Kohl person. That's the way they roll.

I am in a better place, but I feel sorry for the rest of my team. From what I hear, the Kohls employees (and there were plenty in my group), still get all the raises and promotions. Everyone else is too afraid to speak up after what happened to me.

People went to HR. It went nowhere. If Nike doesn't use this opportunity to clean house, that is on them. Too many long-timers have left due to this sh-t.

Everyone conditioned to win, all whilst forgetting what game was being played. Many teams are like a dog chasing a car...they wouldn't know what to do if they caught it.

No, but culture change is needed. Will never be operationally excellent, but can at least be efficient. Accountability missing in many areas, if all teams had to budget for the costs they create (stuff they want to do (projects), ongoing costs (usage fees), and what they f’up (mistakes, brokens)) - the company would run a lot smoother, estimates & ROI’s would be realistic, and would be less of this reactive spending and cost cutting that leads to layoffs. Second thing - the fiefdom builders, the cash su-king vampires, and the folks that take no responsibility for anything gotta go. It takes work to do things well, need folks with the knowledge, work ethic, and integrity to make that happen. Is too many consultants, ETW’s, and selfish “look at me, look at this tool or project I implemented” people when they delivered a negative ROI and nothing that moved the company forward. Lastly, reorg along BUSINESS functions, not tools or platforms… and for goodness sake then STOP Re-org’ing so people can actually know who owns what, what functions they own and what they are responsible for. For me, I care (genuinely) but there is a lot of people who do not, a lot of teams (in tech) disconnected from the business functions they’re supposed to be supporting, and business teams unwilling to hold them accountable for both keeping the business moving and delivering ever improving business functionality. There are tons of great people that can get it done. They need to be set free to do it, not encumbered by ever increasing admin, lack of visibility, and lack of communication and collaboration between the 7-8-9-10 layers of middle management

Nike has been going down hill culturally for years and it will be years until things fall apart completely.

But we are now at the stage of trading in on exclusivity for market share. The suits forgot how to run a hype factory.
