Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

These people have no idea how to do their jobs

Last time you asked your manager a work-related question that's within their purview, did he or she know the answer? Or did they brush you off and either sent you away or changed the subject? We've been getting so many incompetent managers lately that I'm shocked when somebody actually gives me an answer that helps me resolve my issue.

You work in Corp Risk, don't you?

It's like you need to be stupid
uselesss AND unqualified to work there. If all you have is 2 of the 3, you won't be accepted there.

This sounds like the “leader” who can’t remember if their name starts with a K or a C. And seems to have 26 weeks of PTO every year.

He who is willing to ki-l and die for a cause will defeat one who isn’t. Always fight in the last ditch for the survival of all you hold dear. The enemy intends to ki-l you and take all you have. He has made this fight personal—you had better take it that way."

I'd just be happy if my manager actually knew how to manage their people, but alas, they do not.

@gsi. The problem with your story is it won’t be the manager who gets laid off, it will be the staff who actually know something and the clueless manager remains.

I work in a front office, revenue producing role. My manager was a top performing individual contributor that led to her promotion. Upon becoming our team leader, she hired a series of incompetent folks based on her personal relationship with them and not hiring/promoting them based on merit/accomplishment. The result is an underperforming team that is expense heavy and production light.

Moral of the story is that success criteria in various roles vary. A good revenue producer doesn't make a good manager and vice versa. A manager needs to have competent team members to have a top performing team. Bad management and politics have led to a seriously bad situation in our line of business. Layoffs cannot come soon enough.

My manager is clueless, scatterbrained and unresponsive on email. When she does answer a call she’s at Target or the gym and says she’ll call later but only calls after the need or deadline passes. This is one of many skills she (a Sr VP) is reknowned for and has been fir years. And she likely will survive all layoffs due to her politics and lifestyle and keep cashing huge bank.

Hey OP, what group are you in?

In IT, when I hire people, I hire people smarter than me who know more than me.

At least in IT, the smartest people aren't always the best at managing people, sometimes the opposite.

And some managers inherit teams because they're good managers, but they may not be hands on with that teams tech.

Not all SMEs can manage. As a manager, you HAVE to get dirty.

All Wells Fargo managers never ever rolled up their sleeves to do the actual labor and work. They are performers talk lies and political puffery in presentations, town halls, meetings, campaigns, performances. Wells Fargo managerial people cant even produce written reports, many dont know how to use Microsoft Office and many technical tools. These highly paid Wells Fargo managers are dinosaurs but hire more and more POC, contractors, consultants and service providers so that they appease DEI as usual status quo in Wells Fargo. Typical Wells Fargo managers scold "I hire you as SME? Manager is not supposed to know !" These people are monsters let them die with Wells Fargo.

My manager’s pat answer to any question is to just sneer “You should know that”.

So nobody asks him anything. The perfect management technique!

yea managers do need experience in the domain they work. Things today have so much information and so specialized you cannot hire someone in an engineering area that managed tellers or visa versa.

They would have no clue nor be able to be successful. Unfortunate its so bad here the hiring.

I do know of scenarios where managers are hired to manage departments they know nothing about.

There is a school of thought that an effective leader can lead any team without knowing the details of the work being done. I have never agreed with that theory, but if you look around - it happens quite a bit. Another way of looking at it is that being a SME doesn’t necessarily mean you can manage people.

I worked in a role the last 2 years with a manager who turned over her entire team in that time. Nobody ever cared to understand why. I was the most tenured person and have taken another role but I am not gonna last much longer here. It's not just the managers, it's the enterprise wide lack of support, from HR to ER to tech, etc. Call the 1.800 hr number, I'm sure those robots will make it all better. 🙄 What a joke.

What @mcl said. My managers have been highly competent, experienced, and knowledgeable. It's a sample of just a couple, but I'm guessing the OP hasn't had 100 managers either.

Your personal experience at a low level of the company is not reflective of the company as a whole.

Stop complaining, find a new job. Take ownership of your life.

My manager is great. A wealth of information and always ready to sit down and talk something through. You must be just unlucky. I've had some cr@p managers over the years but they're the exception rather than the rule.
