Thread regarding Fiserv Inc. layoffs

Spending money on a PARKING GARAGE??

Rather than allow a TINY bit of WFH flexibility which costs the company ZERO DOLLARS and saves associates COMMUTING COSTS they will waste money on a parking garage for a building we LEASE.

HOW IS THIS THE SOLUTION?????

@nd I do. It’s coming out of the Fiserv pocket, they’ll have to disclose it in the company financials, so eventually you will see. Fiserv entered the lease agreement without counting the number of spaces, although at the time we were going to be hybrid 3 days in and 2 days home and there were no plans to change that. Remember that?

@ee I can assure you this is not being funded by Connell.

@sa Since I’m unqualified please tell me what you call it when merit increases are delayed by a month and not backdated? Had they backdated our raises I could have been convinced it was a simple red tape issue internally that held it up. But that isn’t what happened. I don’t know about you but I work here to get paid so that I can keep a roof over my head and food on my family’s table. I don’t work for Fiserv out of the goodness of my heart. I earned that merit increase and Fiserv failed to provide it on time. Does that sound like a business that is managing its finances well to you? Clearly I’m no expert but I gotta say it doesn’t sound GOOD that’s for sure. So help me out bud. Explain it to us uneducated folks. I’m very eager to understand how that works.

There is tons of money available if we stop share buy-backs, or cut executive bonuses.

There is so much money, they just spend it on what they think is important.

@qg You aren't qualified to know what money is had or is not. A supplemental parking lot is not as much as a building. It does not cost that much for a facility with 3000+ people.

@nc Fixing mistakes would involve listening to the associates who are impacted by the problems management created. Allowing associates to work from home twice a week would put things back the way they were pre-FB and suddenly the parking lot fits enough cars. All without spending money that Fiserv doesn’t have. If they couldn’t afford to provide merit increases on time then a parking garage should not be a priority.

@ks If it was earnest I apologize. It came across as sarcasm and I responded in kind. To answer your question it is conjecture but based on sound business knowledge. A landlord with a signed lease agreement is under no obligation to spend money to accommodate a poor decision made by the tenant. I also have it on good authority that Fiserv was aware of the parking situation from the beginning and asked to build a parking structure and the landlord said no. Fiserv still chose to lease this location anyway because FB needed to be close to his crib. And I mean crib as in his baby bed at home.

At best the landlord has now granted Fiserv permission to build the garage. But there is no chance at all that the landlord is paying for the whole thing themselves out of the goodness of their heart. And if they’re smart they won’t contribute a dime to it because it’s not their problem. A contract is a contract. If fiserv needed 3000 parking spaces they should have picked a location that could accommodate that.

In Omaha we asked about a parking garage and were told that it would cost too much.

@bs Nobody here knows all the particulars. It is true amateur hour. We aren't changing things or helping things on thelayoff.com

@kg So you say "Fiserv" when convenient and "FB" when not whydontwe. Supreme cognitive dissonance on display here -- It's called new management. It makes sense to build a parking garage if your company does will exist for more than 5 years. It is good when a company begins fixing mistakes. Do you fix your mistakes? If you are so good why are you on a layoff board about Fiserv.

@kg Such knowledgeable and logical people are usually secure in their vast knowledge and aren't so off-the-rails angry and insulting when someone asks an earnest question.

But such is the anonymous, ranting internet I guess.

@ge It’s called logic. Did you read the rest of my comment? How would it make good business sense for Connell to pay for a parking garage? Fiserv leased this location knowing full well how many parking spots were available. If Fiserv facilities can’t do simple math and figure out that we have more people than spaces that is not Connell’s fault. If I rent a one bedroom apartment for me and my wife and five children it’s not the landlord’s responsibility to add on more bedrooms. If your IQ is so low that you can’t follow that logic then you clearly for senior leadership.

@ee "This structure is absolutely coming from Fiserv funds and it’s going to impact merit increases again next year."

Is this fact or conjecture? If fact, how would you know?

@fb If you think people work like responsible adults without supervision in this company, you are in for a pleasant surprise. I am happy that your laundry will finally be done though.

work is so much better WFH. I agree the quality and time of delivery on things are 1000 times better now this week. Talent and hard skill seem to multiply very quickly. Everyone knows you can get more skilled very easily by being in a good environment without people. The older people are amateur hour.

@eq I work so much better from home. I can log in as soon as I get up. Get the day started and then get some coffee. Work some more and put on a load of laundry. Work some more and attend some meetings. All while NOT being interrupted by people stopping by my desk or other associates loudly talking nearby. I am far more efficient and focused when I’m home. And if a few bad apples are spoiling the benefit of WFH then those individuals should be dealt with. This isn’t grammar school where the whole class loses recess because a few kids acted up. We’re adults. If Sapience shows people not performing at home they should have to be in the office. Allow managers to actually manage their teams again and make the call. Simple.

@ag I agree with everything except people do NOT work longer and harder at home. That's a load of BS

@bs Hahahahaha. Why would Connell say my bad? Did they hide the parking lot from Facilities when they came to look at the building? If Fiserv failed to count the parking spaces that’s a FISERV problem. Connell is getting paid for 100 as is. They are under no obligation to build an entire parking structure due to Fiserv’s lack of math skills. And this is not the first time. Short Hills was entirely too small to hold all of our staff in the building. And even 100 itself is too small as there are scrum rooms still being used for desk space. Is Connell going to add a 5th floor for us too? That’s not how smart business works. Connell has us locked in. Fiserv agreed to this location so that FB could be close to home and to grease his leasing friend’s palm. This structure is absolutely coming from Fiserv funds and it’s going to impact merit increases again next year. All because WFH is only allowed when it’s convenient for Fiserv. We ought to take the FI off our name because finances are clearly not our strong suit.

Maybe Fiserv had a chat with Connell who said, Yeah, our bad, not enough spots, we'll build you a parking garage gratis. Do you really know all the particulars?

@ag @ag well said. These decisions are not in the best interest of the employees, clients shareholders, NOR the leadership team. When client attrition continues to rise, how will leadership afford their insane compensation packages. Using contract termination fees as proof the leadership team was doing well is honestly bs. All metrics point to this organization crashing and burning. Institutional knowledge leaving at this rate is fatal. Anyone left is scrambling to get out without a care to how fiserv will deal with this aftermath.

@ac Yes I’m going to complain about money being wasted on a completely unnecessary structure when our merit increases were delayed a full month due to financial issues. Yes I’m going to complain about having to come into an office 5 days a week because it’s imperative that we innovate and collaborate together UNTIL there’s an inconvenience on Fiserv’s end and THEN it’s perfectly fine to work remotely. Yes I’m going to complain because this whole RTO has been a fiasco from the beginning when they promised the new building would be within 5 miles of the old one and instead we got plopped in FB’s backyard. Yes I’m going to complain about unnecessary spending that could go towards keeping talented individuals who are leaving in droves due to poor decision making like this. Fiserv used to be so much better than this and the fact that the downturn happened as soon as FB took over is not a coincidence. Associates and clients are unhappy but senior leadership is too concerned with looking like they might be “caving” to the little people that they’d rather throw good money away than admit that people actually work BETTER and LONGER at home. It’s not a business decision it’s an ego and control decision.
