Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

No brainer

Easy way to cut costs -

Cut all remote employees except critical high performing ICs. No sense in having leaders working remotely. beyond ridiculous to have vp, sr directors wfh.

Gut TPM organization. There are some valuable product mangers who should be moved elsewhere

Flatten the organization. Manager needs to have at least 6 ICs. Sr manager at least 15-20, Director around 50, Sr director 150-200, VP 500 plus.

Shut down BATC

Directors at Nike are mere managers. No vision. No strategy.
My "Director" in ND steals my work and uses it. Takes credit. Doesn't send me in the game. Visibility hog. Always in the weeds. Always hands on. Never gonna be more than that. Lawd help me.

We’re going to save money by firing everyone working in a cheaper state. The best way to save money is to force everyone back on the expensive PNW pay scale. /s

While we’re at it we also need to give everyone back their petty cash budgets to keep fat, happy, and feeling like their commute in was worth it. /s

Additionally. Since most production issues happen due to miscommunication between teams. We’re going to fire the entire org responsible for keeping a wholistic eye on the systems.
Its far better to let half the company play hot-potato with responsibility until the person who can actually fix the problem strolls into the office hours later.

"Flatten the organization. Manager needs to have at least 6 ICs. Sr manager at least 15-20, Director around 50, Sr director 150-200, VP 500 plus." - these numbers seem extreme for smaller functions/ geos, but...

  • Get rid of the Sr. Director Level or, even better, downgrade a bunch of VPs to Sr. Directors.
  • Some of our VPs should be Directors. We have VPs for WD+C at every geo for Christ's sake... In Marketing, we have VPs reporting into VPs... we need to stop this nonsense.
  • Get rid of Directors who don't have any direct reports (they're called Principals now)... really, why do those even exist?
  • Get rid of C-suite that stubbornly works remotely
  • Get rid of niche areas within marketing and brand (golf? dance?) as well as design/ merch areas that don't drive significant impact (accessories?)
  • Shut down smaller cities where the distributor model doesn't justify a team of 100+ (Tel Aviv anyone?)
  • Find overlap between teams and merge
  • centralize functions such as payroll, finance, etc.

May the odds be in your favor.

You clearly havent done much direct management. Its one thing to have 50 "in your org". However, No 1 person can effectively manage dozens of careers at once with any real effectiveness. Just do the math on the time you will spend on 1-on-1s alone.

Yes, all of the support org should be gone. Their only purpose is to create and close tickets, and have emails spinning for months. Once no longer tasked with fixing anything they became dead weight. Development teams will be better for having to support & fix the junk they put in production. If a useful & competent support resource, move them to Development. Offshore? Gone. If work the same times as the business teams they work for ok, but Nike is way too chaotic to have a “hand specs to an assembly line” development methodology. If can’t engage with the project teams, is pointless. Isn’t cheaper either, not by a long shot. Getting low quality results is more expensive in the long run.

Or cut production support and make TPM and engineering support the cr-p they put in.

@rfo I am not a nike leader but an ic with common sense.

I would like to add this though. The severance should be more than generous because it's not any individuals fault.

Did you just leak the script??? Cause this is exactly what is going to happen (if Nike was smart)

If we cut all our remote workers in our department, we’d be really up p-o creek without a paddle. Sounds like you’re a Nike leader that shoots from the hip. I’ll see you on the unemployment line in two years from now.
