Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Be aware. Major RIF coming

Be on the lookout for a few things

  • getting removed from or slowly phased out of workload in the next few weeks. You’re not part of long term plans
  • leader finding any reason to provide official coaching. Needed for ratings
  • leader being distant and uninterested in your current work.
  • go with your gut and don’t trust that anyone has your best interest more than their own

The best thing about Verizon is the RIF package. I've never talked with anyone who left who isn't happier. They all have that post Verizon smile.

Good advice in a normal company, but a newby at VZ is usually the one who gets laid off. But if they are really good they can usually find something else in the company. That's what I have seen. Understand the risks at VZ when you job hop. Unfortunately.

Mostly good advice but know that when you do move and are the new guy and a layoff happens, the new guy usually gets the shaft. That's what I've seen. Exception is if the newby is really all that. Hard to be all that though. But if the person is good enough, they can usually find something else in the company to be able to stay. That I have seen a lot also.

You are responsible for your future. Maintain your own vision/mission, project backlog and roadmap. Always be brainstorming new ideas. Managers want autonomous people they can trust and let run. If you're sitting around waiting to be told what to do, you will be RIF'ed. As a manager, I can tell you that those people are a serious drain on a manager's time and energy (ie. always trying to figure out how to make them productive and independent).

If you are not that person (and most are not), then you need to be the highest performer on the team and don't be seen as the complainer. There's still bad luck so maintain your resume (eg. org change, boss doesn't like you, etc), but another manager will see that value and hire you.

Finally, you can mitigate the risk further by always moving forward in your career (ie. look for laterals and promotions every 3-5 years). If you're not having any luck, you can either look externally or double down on my previous advice.

Be aware @op - this happens every year. No one should be surprised.

And no one is exempt (not even Sr Mgr and Dir) - just a matter of where you are in the org.

This is not complicated at all if you are management there's reduction in force every year. If you lead a team your ok if not think to yourself why does the company need you? If your union at came in before 2003 there is a no layoff cluase part of the contract. The truth hurts sometimes but it's very simple.
Management gets laid off craft doesn't

I hope they layoff the pointless people and teams that add no value. There’s way too many.

Sad thing is the people making the decisions are the reasons for said decisions. Who’s RIFing them.

I feel that I am “phased out of the workload” since my first day on job! Not sure what to do about this. Anways, Good Luck all with surviving RIF. Okay, bye bye, lunch time now, need to go

VZ didn’t grow enough this year to feed the herd through the winter. The herd will have to be thinned out in a big way. Chart your own destiny and be prepared. Start networking and get your pipeline of opportunities going just in case you are among those led out of the corral.
