Annual Associate Engagement Survey -Speaking up?

The survey states that Humana is looking for associates' honest feedback to improve. Are you answering truthfully or painting a glorious picture which is far from the truth? Leaving comments as well? Is it useless to speak up? Or is it just bringing trouble to yourself and no one really cares? Or good to skip it completely?

@xx Yes but I've done it anyway and fortunately for me, it's the difference in being fired OR being fired with a large lawsuit and payout. It is legal to record in my state as long as one person being recorded knows it. The law is what matters not Humana's policies because at the end of the day, if I need these recordings, company policy no longer matters. If you expect your leader or their leader or HR or anyone at Humana to care about you and be honest, you will be sorely disappointed. These recordings will save my tail.

@xvI I admire your courage in speaking up! My leader is just as terrible, someone who openly claims he doesn’t care, as he is shielded by his leader ('friend') and HR resource.

If you're wondering why Humana’s culture feels toxic, it's because individuals like these run their own silos, keep getting away with it!! Many employees are too afraid to raise concerns because the risk of retaliation is very real. They'll ruin your career, and push you out of the door, regardless if you're a valuable talent for Humana or not. They don't care!!

If you wonder why Humana's Star Rating fell so sharply, this is one major reason!! The complaints are heard at home, in the community, social media, among members and providers, everywhere except at work in Humana. Who wouldn't run away?

@xw it is against company policy to record.

@vt if you have not already please keep a log of all negative interactions or retaliation and record meetings if possible on your phone. When you have proof go to your AD or whoever the person giving you a hard time reports to.

It is anonymous as I had a leader who was narcissistic, lazy, unhelpful, completely self serving and told lies all the time. When I had a one on one she would YAWN loudly all through it. If you asked a question or for help with an issue, her stock answer was she didn't know. I put all this in a survey and gave her the lowest scores possible
Someone else on our small team didn't even take the survey. She whined about her less than perfect scores in a team meeting but later got RIF'd. Everyone pretty much felt the same way about her, but were afraid to put it in the survey. However, I just played d-mb during the meeting while she complained about the low scorer and the non-participant "dragging her score down"... So as far as I know it is anonymous. They may suspect you but cannot prove anything. So tell the truth.

Completing this survey is akin to cutting yourself to bleed in shark infested waters.

@OP Do NOT make the mistake to think this survey is anonymous. Nothing in corporate America is anymore. Honesty in these types of survey's is a lost art. Not to say leaders care either way.

I have been suffering from some severe retaliations for speaking up to the point this job became a misery for me. It depends on who your leader is. Most of my leaders were wonderful. But this one is simply terrible. Telling them everything is wonderful merely serves to reinforce—or even encourage—these toxic behaviors.

@t7 I see the critical thinking skills you had before becoming a leader have been brainwashed away. Obviously leaders know their teams writing styles and specific positions. There is a high probability that you are part of the problem as reflected on these entries.

@t7 if you really are a “leader”, I hope you are reading ALL of this. The fear and misery is REAL.

@bh it is anonymous. I am a leader and have been over 10 years. We only get the feedback not who it came from

@rw it also goes directly to your own leader.

@OP This is your chance to give anonymous feedback that goes straight to senior leadership—who might not realize that some of their favorite subordinates are running their own show and getting away with things that could put Humana at legal risks. Answer truthfully.

It actually does matter and if you aren’t honest you’re part of the problem.

@r6 you're right. Evil and vindictive leaders which Humana is full of love these surveys so they can see who to target next. This happened on the CW side and a RN was targeted and forced out based on it. Humana is not a human company and the culture is ripe for this cr-p.

You’re high if you think it’s anonymous LOL. I’ve sat there and watched while leaders can drill down by team, state, work city etc. it may not have your name, but it’s pretty easy to figure out. Don’t be naive and think they give two sh*ts what you think.

@q8 I’ve been with Humana for a long time. It’s genuinely disheartening to see what it’s become today—so many unhappy associates. There was a time when we were full of pride and energy, eager to serve our members and providers. We engaged in team-building activities and celebrated every success. We cared for one another. Humana was once the employer of choice, and our star rating climbed higher and higher.

But now, unhappy associate shares their frustration —with family, friends, neighbors, and even on social media. As word spreads, who will still trust their health or life coverage with Humana? Our star rating will do down lower and lower. We're losing trust. Time to turn around.

I wish I would have waited on completing the survey with upcoming early retirement and RIFs.

@n7 First come early retirements with lower age limits, heard looking for 2,000, then RIFs

I voiced my opinions consistently about a problematic team before. I later left out of frustrations, a few months later, they implemented major changes: removed some individuals to different teams, re-structured management, let go some people. Not one, but a few changes to my surprise. So someone is listening, just wait for the right timing (or it just became so bad, time to change those from their point of view, LOL). Do speak up!! Be truthful, honest and constructive!

@a7 truly sad that people use this as a fear-based tool. I guess write whatever you would say to someone's face-- whether clueless leaders or peers. It feels worse than it has in 6 years. and that cycle is coming or at least starting--- RIFs, townhall where people are encouraged to embrace change, then more RIFs, then a new "team" that repeats the same "strategy" but calls it something else and takes credit for the work the past teams have pushed through for sake of patient outcomes. so hard to remain thankful for a paycheck, yet know deep down this is not healthy long-term or acceptable in other settings. the fact we even have to review if we should respond to a survey says it all.

@ar your last sentence is entirely a facade. I left Humana a year and a half ago after becoming a victim of retaliation over something I spoke up about. I don't regret it. I had the courage and said what everyone else wanted to say. The culture there is wicked, no less. It works for people who are fearful and never speak up. The only reason they would encourage you speaking up is so they can identify who needs to be targeted for a quick exit. I left on my own but only because they made it too miserable for me to stay. I still have friends there and know that this practice is continuing, especially on the PCO side.

@a7 Consider Humana’s declining Star Rating (an average drop from 4.37 to 3.63 for 2025)—a signal of real impact!! Associates live alongside members and providers, in homes and communities. What associates say to their family, friends and neighbors — whether they absolutely love or totally hate Humana — speaks far louder than Humana’s own commercials!!

Things won’t improve unless Humana allows them to improve. That starts with honest feedback—from the front lines. And that requires a culture where every associate feels safe to speak up, without fear of retaliation. Humana’s own policies affirm that “when I suspect a violation… I will not get in trouble for speaking up”.

@OP If you complete the survey, be sure to do it in a way that doesn't point to you. AES really is anonymous unlike the others but based on what you write, others may know it's you. In my tenure at Humana, I have seen people retaliated against over and over again and that is always top of mind with me.
