Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

How concerned are you about your job?

Does the lack of transparency about layoffs concern you? Our CEO had the chance to rally the troops and in my opinion, failed. As a result, morale is still going to be low until all this passes. It is just human nature that people concerned about their job are less motivated.

So, does an exceeds rating make someone immune to layoffs?

@mzf, I like your way of thinking.

Not concerned. Either i’ll have a job here or i won’t. Does no good to worry about things you can’t control. Any place you work there is a chance of losing your job, you going to live your life like that? Just carry on, work hard, develop your network of colleagues and everything will work itself out.

I'm very concerned. I left a toxic work environment where the managers were bullies, lied on you, condescending. I came here and it was a breath of fresh air. I felt like an adult again. I don't want to go into another toxic situation like that again. The pay was well and it was a fortune 500 company but the people there were awful.
I am very worried. I am looking around but also, I don't want to jump into another bad situation for the sake of fear of what may or may not happen here.

I'm definitely worried. I'm in the risk area and I keep hearing that we need more focus on risk but I don't feel safe. Our team has lost 3 people in the last year to attrition and they have not been replaced. All that work fell on us so we are all working crazy hours now and it's fire drill after fire drill because we can't get ahead of anything. Even with all that extra work we took on, I still believe there will be cuts and I'm not one of the "golden boys" or "golden girls" so I am actively looking. I was before, but my efforts are increased now.

Yeah, I am not the kind that likes surprises and since there is no merit based logic in who is getting cut, I cannot control my own future here so I am going to find a place where I can control my future.

I came here looking to seize on the opportunities afforded competent people in a chaotic corporate reshuffle, but I can see now in the lack of an integrated communication plan with a half strategy happening in fit and starts, that I will not get that chance to help.

I think the biggest issue with the lack of communication from the top is that we cannot plan how to either position ourselves for continuance or moving on. People are just disappearing. I get that they virtually walk you to the door to prevent further scandal by disgruntled thousands (statistically a likelihood if they were allowed to work out the 60 days), but it is really quite disruptive and causes the ones they don't plan on severing to look anyways.

There are ways to do this that increase productivity.

Number 1 worry amongst the team and NO agenda point on the town hall. Really shows a lack of basic empathy to the employees. Topic came in as a trending question and was positioned as the last thing to put into the Q&A section with less than 3 minutes left

Not by accident

I expect my job to go away.

We are now being evaluated for work duplication and it looks like we're being even more integrated into an enterprise version of the team we are.

I can see them working out what parts of our job can be automated, then how to use or get rid of most of us. I give it 1-2 years at most until my job is seriously in danger.

The one potential saving grace is that we just got assigned more work under once function we do, so many we'll be transitioned to specialize in that. It would fit the enterprise IT model of doing one thing and doing it well.

I hope I can wring two more years out of this job. If I can pull that off I'll be able to finish up a degree, otherwise I'm royally screwed.

Very worried. My skills are modern, my performance rating is "Exceeds", WF as a whole is antiquated and operates within an insular culture. "Ol' Boy" network makes the final decisions on layoffs and will continue to protect their own.

I don’t think layoffs lack transparency. Sure they aren’t saying what departments, numbers each month etc. but these things are fluid. People leave so cuts don’t need to be made. Business unit sold off. Not cuts need to happen.

We know they are happening, our leaders have told us. We know 20 to 25% over 3 to 4 years. Do math! 2 to 3k a month on average.

I’m not worried. I’m concerned and I am working smarter and performing the best I can. We I get cut? No clue. What’s the point of worrying in something that is completely out of my control.

If you can’t stand the uncertainty, find something new.

It’s called ‘attrition’. You resign, no severance.

I wish I would be laid off. My leadership is awful but right now you cannot move. I would cry tears of joy to be laid off at this point.

Agreed.

WF thinks that keeping silent on layoffs will improve morale by way of people not focusing on it, but that is flawed thinking.

Layoffs are all ANYONE is focused on right now.

Until the bank announces layoff plans by LOB, morale and productivity will continue to be as low as they can possibly be.

Charlie's speech about accountability can be translated to: "stop worrying about layoffs and instead worry about your bonus". This was (ironically) also to prepare people for not getting a bonus.

So, no job security and no bonus, in a culture that has historically been very heavy bonus based.

What exactly is my motivation to do more than the bare minimum again?? My paycheck? Nope, try again, this isn't what I signed up for.

Worried is probably not the word that I would use. I know that I could lose my job. The leadership in my group has been honest that "every group will be impacted and that we will say goodbye to some good people."
I find the lack of specifics concerning though.
So, I am constantly networking, applying, and interviewing. Always have a line in the water.
