Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Layoffs Nation Wide

I don't know if anyone's looked at the news lately but the sheer number of layoffs happening is staggering.

Also there aren't really jobs out there. Like None. I looked and there are maybe 5 jobs in our industry in the area posted.

With Columbia also laying people off this is a bit scary to think finding a new job might not be possible in the short-term.

No use speculating about whether other people will be able to find jobs if laid off. Any person’s ability to find new employment is largely contingent on their own skills and work niche. Take my brother for example. Smart guy became an A&P mechanic. He repairs aircraft engines. He likes to tell me “If I got laid off I’d have another job within a week and probably making more money too.”

Yeah I know, none of you are aviation mechanics. The principle is the same though. Have a specific enough skill the market needs? You’ll find a job. Are you more a soft-skills person with those skills being the same as 100 other people? Yeah, finding a new job might prove more difficult. Same as always.

Everyone should also be comfortable with the idea of working in a different industry since switching industries is often required to find new employment. Which means having skills that are actually transferable to a different industry. I know a former Nike employee whose job here was working as a color specialist. Yeah, her entire job revolved around selecting colors for Nike product. Needless to say there isn’t exactly a huge demand for color specialists in the Portland market. If she still worked here and was laid off yeah that’d be a problem for her.

@1uoa+1qX1vhCY Tech always has layoffs, or expiration of projects and large workstreams. I'm not saying that it is all rosy or that companies are on a hiring binge right now like during the pandemic. I am saying that the tech area has identified new areas of growth, and are currently pivoting and spinning up teams around them, that could use good folks. The general trajectory is UP now in tech because as you yourself mentioned, the big band aid ripoff was about a year ago. It is like the stock market, you can always point to the small peaks or troughs, but you really have to pay attention at what's spinning up in the background, decisions being made at the front end, because what you see in the news or outcome now were based on decisions months and months ago.
I'm just saying look at tech and if you're a good fit, you'll find a lot more nuggets than the person focusing on the sky falling.

FAANG is also actively hiring in select areas. These are giant global companies. Layoffs and active recruiting often occur simultaneously unless you’re in a company Nike that can’t get its business strategy straight.

@1tpk+1qX1vhCY I don't know if you've been paying attention but there have been massive layoffs again the last few weeks. The market is far from rebounding.

This year, there's small, continual job cutting by many tech companies, rather than a single huge round of layoffs. In 2023, the Band-Aid was pulled off all at once. So far in 2024, it's being peeled off excruciatingly slowly.

Google, amazon, doccusign, Snap : still laying off. Microsoft also cut 1,900 jobs.

After laying off more than a thousand employees in January, Google warned employees that rolling layoffs could continue through the year. Meta in 2024 says it's eliminating management layers. They're doing rolling layoffs called " quiet firing" similar to Nike to avoid the news. The layoffs are continuing even as sales and profits jumped and share prices spike.

Then there's a wave of startup closures happening right now.... sure it's not as massive as last year but when 50% of the people from last year still haven't found jobs and 35K people have been laid off in Tech alone this year, it isn't exactly a market flush with new roles.

Tech job market is rebounding. Increasing number of hires in big companies. Also tech stocks going way up. If you're a good IC there's a demand for that. Sh---y not real ICs and fake people managers and directors please don't apply.

@1beg+1qX1vhCY This message is for anyone who gets laid off. Don't forget that you came from Nike, one of the most iconic brands in the world. A lot of people would have loved to work here, and you guys made it here. That still counts for something.

Good people get laid off all the time. Sometimes it is for political reasons, or just plain d-mb luck. There are other companies out there that would love to have your talent. Good luck to all.

It will probably be harder for me to get a job after being layer off than I think. Currently I’m like yeah no problem. Just get online at apply for another. In reality I’ll probably be back at my parents jobless for the next two years.

If you don’t get laid off you will be in a much better position economically. As more layoffs happen people need to downsize, sell assets to make ends meet, etc. You’ll still have (mostly) the same purchasing power.
Also the facilities on campus will be less crowded. Lines at lunch. Parking will be easier. Less traffic.

Don't believe the hype on the government jobs report either. If you lift up the hood of the "amazing" job creation, most of them are government jobs being created with more debt.

@gza+1qX1vhCY The unemployment rate is low because the majority of people have been unemployed so long they no longer qualify for unemployment benefits and so don’t count in the numbers anymore,

It’s so scary. I know a lot of great folks struggling to find work after being laid off. It’s off because the unemployment rate is still low. Good luck to everyone looking
