5 day RTO is here.

Well the long awaited 5-day RTO announcement finally came and in PNC fashion it was an email instead of being covered by the executives at their all hands. Obviously they didn’t want the questions or responses. Demchak is so disconnected from reality it’s comical. Good luck to folks that have been hybrid remote since well before the pandemic, a detail most in leadership seem to forget. Can’t wait for the talent to leave in troves to get paid what they’re worth.

Company wide email to come later this week. Only managers received the communication for now.

@sp does AMG still use that mind-dulling Lean Management style of doing things ?

I heard they have to tell each other everyday how they are feeling by using a 1-10 rating scale. And if you don’t say you’re a 10, then you’re considered a Detractor.

Also heard they have to track their daily performance by recording how much time they spend each day working on particular functions … heard they micro manage their people to death, too.

Can anyone confirm if that’s true ?

My group worked a hybrid schedule pre-pandemic because there were literally more employees in the buildings than places for them to sit. Every day was a squid-game scale round of musical chairs. It was not unusual to arrive after a stressful commute only to be unable to find a seat, let alone anything near your team. Arguably the whole point of in-office work. There was no rotation or schedule, but enough people going hybrid eased the problem until we all got sent home full time for Covid anyway. That’s the big relief no one seems to remember.

Management and realty services spent untold millions converting all the properties to open address because it was trendy five years prior in Silicon Valley. By the time they were finished other big companies were realizing it didn’t work. Behind the times again.

I don’t hate going in, but without any assigned seating or other attempts at continuity it’s going to be a sh-t show. Management literally gets told by leadership “you’re all adults, figure it out” which is insane policy.

@na This likely runs afoul of almost any company's ethics and employee conduct policies. Those things are drafted airtight. Any good company has a mega law firm review them and provide boilerplate templates proven effective at stopping scotch tape shrink.

Additionally, where do you plan to store the volume of inventory to offset the $500 monthly cost adder you will see in connection with RTO? That would be one giant surge of scotch tape and paperclips--perhaps a modular pole barn would be one option? I'm concerned your estimates of storage space needed are on the low side. I did a rough cost buildup for you and it is looking like you might hit breakeven around year 16.

Probably because they actually got paid enough to build a life, afford a home, provide for their families, etc off of their salaries. There was actually an incentive to physically be present for your job in those days. Money.

Same cannot be said currently, and not only that, now you're asking people to go out of their way to spend even more of the money that they don't have on parking garages, gas, etc. It's easy to write these small silly expenses off as "business expenses" when you're in the high tower, but these are very abysmal costs for your average employee who is already struggling.

Of course that doesn't matter and there will be no sympathy. Just giving you a different perspective.

@n9 I work from home full time and while my work day doesn’t start until 8 am, I’m up at 4 am to workout, shower, prepare myself for the day. After my day job, I go right to my second job. You sound ignorant insinuating that because people are upset about RTO that they MUST be lazy, undisciplined and entitled. Of course I encourage people to leave if they’re not willing to obey the policy- PNC has a right to enforce it and we have a right to walk away. But let’s give this “stop being lazy and go to work” narrative a rest.

I don’t know about all you people out there complaining about RTO but I miss taking pens, post-it notes , scotch tape , paper clips, envelopes etc etc etc from the store room closet. Ive been home for nearly 6 years and I ran out of supplies a year ago. I’m looking forward to May 4th so I can re-stock. Hahaha

I mean, how will your delicate souls possibly survive the crushing horror of… checks notes… putting on real pants, seeing other human faces, and walking more than twelve steps from your couch to your fridge? The humanity. The absolute tragedy.

So leave if you are unhappy? 5 day work week was the standard before COVID. You all bought into that farce of a pandemic and have become so spoiled that you forgot what a 5 day work week was. If you are unhappy then quit and go find another job. No one is keeping you at PNC.

@mj my previous colleagues received an email from the head of AMG that clearly states their role isn’t impacted and they will remain remote. I think that’s been the company’s issue the whole time - different rules for different areas of the bank and no enforcement or guidance on what “flexibility” truly means.

ROFL Firstbank folks sure aren't going to wait around until acquisition gets completed with this news. There's already been "please PLEASE stay" talk, that's definitely going to get ramped up. Not to mention cr-ppy bosses, I bet the zero notice departures are going to go wild.

The issue I have is that this is not consistent across the enterprise. Why does my LOB need to RTO 5 days with seemingly no flexibility yet those in AMG do not have to RTO at all?

My job can be done 100% remote, I don’t interact with the other members of my team, it’s all “at your own pace” type of environment. My team isn’t even based in the same state as I am located. So why even go in? Just to stare at the cubicle walls? Without additional pay, parking stipend, or help with childcare costs (which PNC graciously sent an email earlier that the Tower would offer full time care starting at $2,250/month!) I’d be losing money every paycheck just to keep by…PNC can’t seriously expect the RTO mandate to be beneficial to anyone except for the execs and those who hate their families and want to spend their entire lives staring at their computers.

I saw the red flags early on and made the choice to leave the company - best decision I’ve ever made. I know it’s easier said than done, but PNC needs to feel the pain of losing more employees than they expected before it will ever commit to fixing the culture. I’m glad we were able to complete one of the largest projects in PNC history (Project Taurus) during the height of COVID. We couldn’t have done it without the in-office collaboration…..oh wait. I’m glad we were able to acquire BBVA during peek covid times. We couldn’t have done it without the in-office collaboration….oh wait. Consistently beating earnings, record growth and net income, all time high stock price on Jan 8, 26. This was all completed with a vast majority of WFH employees. This RTO is politically driven, a power move, and a coercion by Bill’s friend Jamie Dimon. Teams will dwindle, property taxes will rise because the buildings have “value” again, people who stay will need to carry the weight of lost loyal employees. This power move is not sitting well with any of the coworkers I chat with.
