You Can't Make this Stuff Up - A True Midyear Story

I had my midyear and got a Meets. I do good work, help the team achieve goals and never ask for anything but a little respect and dignity. I am an individual contributor and have ZERO control over a budget or P&L at all. In our 2021 MBOs, our business put an objective for Expenses/Cost Consciousness that basically said "do more with less" "be cognizant of expenses, and the need to reduce expenses, etc" even though I'm an IC and scrape by with a worn out laptop and nothing else. Kind of outrageous. It shows you how little this place supports People and little it values People on any level.

Then in my midyear, I was told I got a Meets on the reducing expenses objective because I haven't asked for any supplies, equipment, accommodations or anything else. I wasn't even allowed to retrieve a desktop monitor from the office during covid. I had to mute the speaker so they didn't hear my sarcastic "you got to be joking" laugh. So heaven forbid if I did need $50 for a headset or a monitor or something, I would have been rated less than Meets. There is no shame in how some of these managers treat us. None.

However, the last bunch (Tolstedt, Stumpf, etc) got to walk away with millions in stock and comp after the sales practices fiasco and they're telling us to p-e-ons to be cognizant of expenses as individual contributors? How insulting and tone deaf the leadership is. We have a CEO who makes $20 plus million, and I'm told I get a Meets because I haven't been requesting supplies or extras to do my job as a P-e-On individual contributor.

Now mind you, my laptop is on its last leg and barely has the processing memory to even run an Excel spreadsheet and a PPT slide open at the same time. Not once in the entire time I have worked here, has any so called "leader" or any of my managers ever asked me "what do you need to succeed" or "is there anything you need to better support you or help you in your job?" Never! They don't give a damn about the People here. All the while many execs walked away with millions and millions after public scandals that resulted BILLIONS in fines paid they come after us, the rank and file, over the most petty of expenses. The gall of these people to come after us that never ask for a thing and still do our jobs well. Heaven forbid you need a new laptop, a headset, a monitor, or anything. The lack of basic respect, dignity and support is unlike anything I have ever seen, anywhere, even in jobs I worked before college.

I hope as many people quit as possible in the coming months, leave, GTFO of here, because this is such a one-way street. I'm working on it myself. Do yourself a favor and leave, it's like an abusive relationship with a partner who doesn't have a morsel of respect for the relationship or anything you bring to it. All you can do is move on.

Marines did two tours in Vietnam, their tours lasted 13 months versus the Army who had 12 month tours. (Ke Shan and Tet, Hue and a little side excursion to Cambodia)

Inefficient employees is great justification for having less of them, so long term, Charles approves of your plan.

@jsi, just think, if you put as much thought into doing something that’s actually constructive than thinking of stupid ways to try to stick it to the man, you’d be a lot better off. The company pays your salary and provides you benefits. They are under no obligation to do anything else. You agreed to it by your continued showing up to work and receiving compensation.

Bet you lost an hour or more of your life putting together your little diatribe. Wells is living rent free in your brain.

Laptops are replaced on a 48-month cycle unless there is some other issue (i.e. hardware failure).

Me: "So why was (insert name of any former WF exec who departed due to bad reasons) allowed to receive hefty compensation and stock options on their way out of the door?"

Mgr: "Because it was stipulated in their offer letter when they joined WF."

Me: "Just like "full-time WFH" was stipulated on my offer letter?"

Mgr: (facial expression somewhere between "deer in headlights" and "dying trout")

Yeah, no longer paying for certifications is completely lame. Memberships / subscriptions, or, I guess I get it, someone out there was probably abusing it, but certs? Do you want a bunch of uneducated / untrained people working for you? Apparently!

IMO, they should keep certs and cut the CEOs pay by 0.1% to cover it. He won't miss it.

Try working in Risk/Audit and being told you are no longer going to be reimbursed for any training, certifications, dues etc.. (CISA, CRISC etc).... this place doesn't want smart well trained certified people, they want monkey's who will do what they're told and not question.

My co-worker said similar in tech. You just put your head down and work. Don't look up or speak out for fear of repercussion.

sigh.

You are doing it wrong.

I agree about unfair pay and compensation and stupid cr@p done by the top - my new goal is to be a "cost center" to the bank, and to MAXIMIZE the cost to the organization.

You can be subtle in about this.

Our new goal should be - destroy the bank from the inside.

Here's how:

Need a new chair? The bank is obliged to provide a safe working environment
https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/free-books/employee-rights-book/chapter7-8.html#:~:text=A%20reasonable%20accommodation%20is%20assistance,would%20pose%20an%20undue%20hardship.

Laptop on its last legs? Drop it powered on into a bathtub full of salt water. It was an accident. They gonna fire you cause sh-t happened? No. They will send you a replacement. In the process, it will cost the bank money.

Want a new monitor and have a laptop? These dell screens are SUPER fragile. Pick the laptop by the screen with your fingers pressing hard on the screen. It will break. Call TC - they will just send you a replacement laptop no questions asked.

Vaccine - you can object due to a personal belief or religious exemption. Still get the vaccine but there is no law that demands you be truthful about getting it. Lie and tell them you did not get it because you have a religious exemption. When pressed 'the church of the Flying Spaghetti monster recommended we do not get vaccine'. It is BIG lawsuit fodder if management laughs, jokes or even hint with probing questions about your religious beliefs; https://www.eeoc.gov/newsroom/frito-lay-settles-eeoc-religious-discrimination-lawsuit

But thats the overt stuff. There is also covert stuff you can do:

In meetings, push tangents - someone is talking about how a new process needs to work, personally brainstorm for ways to get them off track. "The system needs to do X". You respond - "Does this comply with policy?" "Have you thought about Y?" "Have we done a cost benefit analysis to see if it would be cheaper to buy it?" "How will this new thing save/make the bank money" - Do this without being an a$$ho-e, but meetings are easy to steer if you ask the right questions. Its all about driving down efficiency.

Use bathroom more frequently and for longer periods. You have a full computer in your pocket. Use more frequent bathroom breaks to trade stonks, send resumes, read the news....whatever floats your boat. The goal is to be LESS productive per day. Make it a goal. Like I usually take 2 bathroom breaks. Tomorrow it will be 3 and so on. If management complains, say you are having some tummy problems, or if a woman (and manager is a man) blame it on "female biology" (guys are super uncomfortable responding to that). Be creative!

If you in software development, do not try write efficient code. Make it loop and jump arbitrarily to random places to make it LESS efficient. Do EXACTLY what is asked, ESPECIALLY if its wrong. Waste as much time as possible.

In data, make indexes less efficient and join paths painful. Design tables to use as many joins as possible. Document nothing.

In project management, micro manage the team - make them report their status every hour, log jira after every task. And when they do not do that "EMBRACE CANDOR"

In business analysis, encourage customer to dream big, promise them miracles that you know can not and should not be delivered. Bonus points for implementation dates on or near holidays.

In customer service, type slower and talk slower. There is no law or policy that says you have to type or talk a certain number of words per second. This is a journey not a race and you do not get paid more to deliver more.

Be creative people.

A silent protest will preserve your income while stickin rite in their a$$

We are not partners in any of this any more - we are no longer TEAM members; now we are EMPLOYEES who can (and are) being replaced "at will".

We are cogs in the wheel to maximize chainsaws stonk option awards while we get next to nothing by comparison.

Make them bl33d.

@gbn, so freaking true about the 50 people trying to solve a problem. It is so sad!

Laptops are replaced a default schedule. There's nothing wrong the company asking people to watch expenses, that's just good business sense, all companies do that. I myself will be looking very soon because there's no job advancement here any longer for me at this company. There's a whole lot of bogus job posts. And if your in SF like I am there's a lot better opportunities external. The companies culture has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. It used to be about hiring intelligent headcount and providing lots of avenues for growth and building in house. Now its about hiring the cheapest person possible in the lowest costs locations. What you end up with is calls with 50 people all incapable of solving a simple problems.
