Thread regarding Columbia Sportswear Co. layoffs

RTO

Teased the RTO mandate for so long in every staff meeting, and now its finally here. Someone has clearly had enough with remote work. But to force it on existing employees, to uproot their family to continue to work for them? How does this make any logical sense? Will this company continue to exist even a few years from now?

@4gx I’m just one guy, and it’s my experience. I won’t name names but on my team (a small group in CDT) there were people let go that shocked no one. They were folks already on performance plans. They were already reported to HR for multiple issues multiple times. I don’t disagree at all that other teams are hemorrhaging fantastic (established and emerging) talent but that was not the case for us. I do not mean to apply a blanket statement by any means and do apologize for doing so. I stand by my statement that many capable people remain and they do have options to leave which will continue to impact the workloads of those of us who stay. Due to my health, I am staying. My kids need insurance and they definitely need life insurance when I’m gone. I have a handful of years left to live if I’m lucky (unless some breakthrough happens), and I am saddened to see how things are going in CDT. I think what is coming off as “ego” is really a hefty amount of grief. Thanks for giving this perspective.

@3xv The layoffs were not based on performance but rather were largely based on cost and a heavy dose of the interim leadership not really understanding what many of us did or even how things actually work. The folks that left carried literally hundreds of years of experience and a deep understanding of how to run, support and operate the systems and data that run the business. Making a blanket statement like "leaving us more capable people to pick up the work" is pretty insulting. Yeah, it probably does s*ck to still be there, but be careful throwing shade on us who were caught up in the RIF. So yeah, please check your ego.

@4cy I have a terminal illness and two kids, so I’ll be staying until I’m unable to work for the sake of my family. I’ll be sure to check my ego when I get the chance.

@3xv - I think most of the "more capable people" have already left the building 2 months ago. Please check your ego at the door when it's your turn to leave.

Tim’s announcement he sent Thursday was so out of touch. They already have done a lot of layoffs of people who weren’t great in the job, and it left a bunch of us more capable people to pick up more work. People who are capable are also people that can leave. And a lot of those people will probably leave in 2026. Tim might be doing what he thinks is best, but unfortunately that choice could end up crushing what left of this company.

@jm Columbia Sportswear misstepped by spending over $233 million in early 2025 to repurchase shares at ~$78–81, only to see the stock drop to ~$56.30, wiping out about $71 million in value. What was meant to boost earnings per share and show confidence instead drained cash reserves and now looks like poor timing and mismanagement of capital .

Negative vote for asking if this company will exist? Is HR on this board now? All these moves are usually done before a company is sold to the highest bidder. That is a fact. Which would mean really the end of such a company, even if under the same name.

Without a pay increase, it will not make financial sense for many families. Seems like they are hoping this results in voluntary departures so they don’t have to give you severance,
