Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

VSP taker here

I figured even if I stayed I would be on the chopping block at all times anyway. This way leaving at least paid off. I have since had few comparable job options in terms of pay, and some of them seem better in terms of work environment and hours. Haven’t decided yet. In any case, I wish you, my former colleagues, all the luck. And to those who left - I hope you find jobs that will meet your needs and make you at least a bit happy.

I remember the day I was told to document 'everything I do' and to educate others on my work. Short meeting really.

I’m just about 50 and I’m taking it. I shouldn’t let it bother me or care about it but I get stressed about work and it gets worse each year.
For the last couple years we have been living 100% on my spouses salary and save mine so I’m going to leave with or without the VSP and get a job I can leave at work. 100% won’t live to retirement age if I stay here so hopefully I can make it a little bit poorer. Fidelity says I can quit today and 110% chance survive in a bad market so I’ll hope for the best.

I am still undecided.
late 50's. and still few years before reaching retirement age
mortgage paid off, kids graduated from college and working full time.
empty nest, no load, wife and me are in good health,
it is dilemma whether to take the severance package.

Good luck....if your IT and part of operations...you WILL be working for HCL.....There is no denying this. They are separating teams into operations and engineering all over the company. If your part of engineering, you have a better shot at getting some more time with company if that's what you choose. Operations, well. You are expendable and noted as being plug and play, have you been asked to document everything you do? You might be asking yourself, well, maybe I can make it through this VSP thing...and come out the other side being ok...maybe...Wouldn't you rather make your own path, rather than get that call with HR on the line since they came up with some excuse your position has been eliminated, and your service is no longer needed then wind up with the standard two weeks. The RTO folks...8 days a month is just the beginning. Even if your labeled as home based, they can change that and will and have done already. They want the tenured folks to leave...the people with 5wks of vacation, high pay...etc...they need to now pay for this new V with a hint of yellow. What a waste of money and effort.

@uap, be real, no one can ever do that again, the deck's stacked so against it. That possibility stopped dead in its tracks in 2011.

Thank you for your service. Hopefully you have left it better than you found it.
