Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Absent CTO

Another week goes by and once again zero communication from our “CTO”. She has been onboard for almost 6 months now and has done zero to communicate her strategy, vision, and viewpoints to the broader org. Right now is when we need strong visible leadership, but yet she continues to be in hiding. What a coward.

TBH I would be ok with her lack of actual tech experience if she would just step up and lead. Curiosity and humility would go along way. Be present and engaged. Spend time with your people who are lower in the organization.
Sad reality is it might be too late, as she has shown her true colors already.

Another terrible hire from the useless TA leader at Nike. Absolutely zero experience or skills relevant to leading and transforming a global tech function in a F500 company. No core tech experience, no engineering experience, no experience ever leading a major tech function, no experience ever transforming a tech function. Core experience is in business roles in a Tech company, how is this even comparable to the current needs at Nike. The only plus for Nike is a female leader in Tech (But actually has no tech experience) It’s so insane it’s laughable. How did JD even consider this could be the solution for the biggest need in the entire company…? This is why Nike is failing.

I wonder if her HR and comms person are working overtime this weekend to ensure she “shows” up well next week. Will she actually have anything meaningful and relevant to share with her organization? Probably not.

"She is also savvy enough to ensure she spends a minimum of six months and one day in Washington so she can avoid paying our ridiculous or state tax."

I want to point out that being a resident of Washington does not get you out of paying Oregon income tax. There are hundreds of Nike employees that live in Vancouver and are full-time residents of Washington. Rather, you are taxed based on where you worked to earn the money. In other words, if you are a Washington resident but you are in Oregon 4 days a week working at WHQ, Nike is still withholding Oregon state income tax, and you have to keep records to show that your taxable income is actually only 80% of what they are reporting (since 20% is WFH in Washington) to get a proper refund.

I doubt this has any real factor in our CTO's presence or visibility.

To be fair, one reason why they are likely commuting back and forth from Seattle to Beaverton is that they have kids in school up there. I thought the plan was for her family to move down this summer. On the other hand, if I joined what I thought was a solid company and they immediately started laying off thousands of people for obviously bogus reasons, and I also was working directly for a sociopath leader that was the most unpopular and hated executive in the history of the company, I'd be questioning my commitment level to the new gig and deciding whether I'd want to uproot my family for this sh!!!tshow. If I were her, I'd be looking for another job and wondering how long I had to stay at Nike to not tarnish my future career prospects.

We got a lemon CTO. I am sure most ICs work harder than this CTO. How the heck does she have time for so many vacations after starting a new high profile job.

The fact that she took the time to clean up her Insta followers and make it private after being called out, but STILL has not updated her LinkedIn says everything we need to know.

no time to communicate with her.org, but plenty of time for offsites and vacations AND a social media clean up. That soclal clean up happened last week when she was called out on this forum, so we know her HR and comms people are watching. Heard she removed some Nike followers 😂

Cringe as it was and as corrupt as he may have been...atleast the previous guy had the ba--s to address the entire org. We definitely got an upgrade with this piece of work..(insert eyeroll)

In addition to consultants, also listening to same group of VPs and distinguished engineer

Another sh-t hire that wont make a decision and vaguely discuss maybe some goals. Spend 300k on consultants to recommend what we should be doing. Rinse and repeat.

I guess she’s listening after all: just took her insta private

The crazy thing is according to the Workday org chart she has over 120 people reporting to her. I'm not defending her but that's insane! There's no way she can manage that.

The same VPs that are leading this huge "transformation" were the same who were being benefited during RL s time at Nike. People that were leading Adobe or over hiring in their functions are now in charge of cleaning everything.

And, same as the CTO, they care only about their paycheck and bonuses.

Did any one of them decline to travel this week? Or were they together in SEA celebrating the huge accomplishment of letting so many of us go this week, for their mistakes over the past 5 years? Do not forget their names and remember when they talk engagement, respect, people first.

It says a lot about Tech leadership by looking at all her direct reports and what is being prioritized under her leadership. More of the same toxicity, minor changes to please AWS and Microsoft.

Why can’t Nike have a strong leader with technical and leadership background

Do the math… Four days a week for 52 weeks is just shy of seven months. She has already easily been “away” for 4-5 weeks this calendar year alone. Very easy for her to defend her Washington state residency.

And when she is in office, she only talks to her 3-4 favorite folks there.

For the remainder, not even a good morning.

Extremely arrogant.

For the people who are quick to defend her by saying she is in the office four days a week, it’s laughable. How many days has she really been there in the office? Vacations, off-sites, , business travel. When she does come to Portland, I guarantee she isn’t paying her own way. Nike is footing the bill. She is also savvy enough to ensure she spends a minimum of six months and one day in Washington so she can avoid paying our ridiculous or state tax.

JD and MM are patting themselves on the back for their female tech executive hire. Meanwhile she could care less about the organization she leads. Sad thing is she should be an inspiration to women in technology, but she isn’t. Nobody wants to model themselves after a self promoting narcissist.

If you didn’t know she is planning on eliminating Box and Slack and is currently negotiating with Microsoft to move us to Sharepoint and Teams to reduce costs. This is more or less a done deal at this point.

Edited for spelling

She’s a glory chaser who has no understanding of style or aesthetic it takes to make trends.

amazon is a virtual mall, not a fashion maven, whose internal products are Shien-style knock offs.

There is nothing good about Nikes future with her as a choice

She was busy on her expensive offsite in Seattle this week!

Hard working lady, except that for Aws and not Nike :)

She does not care. JD does not care. Simple as this.

Tech is a toxic function and will continue to be. Look at all the VPs to start.

Imagine you are the new CTO of one of the biggest brands in the world, yet six months later, you still haven’t updated your LinkedIn. What a joke! Amazon Fashion indeed.

Let’s be real - Nike is just a resume filler for her before she leaves in 2-3 years. Right on time for Nikes next large layoff.
