Thread regarding JPMorgan Chase & Co. layoffs

Manager speaks in non-English

I work in Tech and my manager speaks in Telugu most of the time during brainstorming session around his desk. All of my peers speaks in same languages with him.
Because of this, I miss many key discussion about my project.
I can't raise this problem to my ED as he also speaks in Telugu.

My managers is also grooming my peers of same languages for promotion by giving high visibility projects and recognizing them for minor achievements. On other side, he is downplaying my achievement. I am better in technical skill and soft skill than my peers but I am facing a glass ceiling due to this.

I am also from India and feel very much marginalized.

How to address this issue?

This can't be trivialized if the problem is related to Dallas only. Dallas has huge number of jobs and if this kind of favoritism exists then a large number of deserving employees will be impacted.
This needs to be brought into attention of HR.

The problem is specific to Dallas only. I do not see this in with our New Jersey team.

Promotions and layoffs are not fair due to this problem. Managers are retaining who can speak Telugu without caring they are losing talent.

It’s a shame how managers are able to get away with such behavior. In spite of all the training on diversity and inclusion, behavior such as those mentioned here prove that unethical conduct is tolerated if not condoned.
OP should definitely raise this with the ethics hotline and let them handle it. Worst case at least he will hesitate to continue such behavior once it is brought to light outside his team. People should learn to leave their cultural affinity at home before stepping into the office.

@Lnfl+1uOikBkL - are you talking if our 3D CIO in Dallas? 3D - Dallas Digital Duffer?

My project also has the same problem. Telugus prefer working with only Telugus and my manager who is also Telugu withholds sharing important information with non-Telugus.
I am suspecting there may be unfair game in giving rating for annual appraisal this year.

Is this guy in town or “on tour” with his extra curricular action?

Agree 101% with this view that HR is never ever going to side with the complainant but will take an official position. They will shield this rogue manager who appears to be an unethical person with all kinds of violations. The situation is best addressed by the ethics hotline. These are third parties that administer that. Also, there is the board which you can write to, again very safe process and is anonymous. I know of a case that was processed through that. That individual who was committing fraud was let go. No HR intervention was needed

@icqk+1uOikBkL I've seen it happen so many times, don't be naive HR is not your friend. If you don't believe me look up on youtube, there are so many ex-HR people that will attest to this, ever wonder why these "anonymous" surveys either ask you to sign in or the link is unique to only you? I am not a fan of the whole favoritism based on ethnic backgrounds either. You have been warned, its your livelihood so make your decisions wisely. If you are truly unhappy with the team, see if you can transfer, or update resume and "quiet quit" while looking for new jobs. Keep in mind JPM is an org that tracks a lot of your activity through device, even webcam if you are wfh, be mindful of what you do on the corporate device.

@ilcj+1uOikBkL - if I am not wrong, aren’t you the one in question. Who did you ask to get this email crafted ? We know you yourself are incapable of writing a decent sentence in English without seeking help. I will expose you to HR for all your fake trips to Chennai, California , etc. don’t assume your staff is going to remain quiet. The ethics hotline is available to all and reporting anonymously is very much an option. Now YOU have been warned.

@hfdn+1uOikBkL That is a sure way to get fired, HR is not there for you they protect the company's interests. JPM likely view managers/leaders as more valuable assets to when you do this you will put yourself on the shortlist for termination/layoff. You have been warned.

This is the same with every company.

Don’t complain to this board! Tell HR to do something about this person who is not able to communicate with his team and constantly going on jaunts at company’s expense . This is an ethics violation too.

@ctcl+1uOikBkL - cannot be the treasury digital guy. This guy does the same thing but his language of communication is a South Indian language called - Tamil. He keeps going to Chennai as that is where his staff and consultants are based and they are all like him - Tamil speaking people.

You do not work for the Treasury IT in Dallas , do you? This guy is quite a character . Under qualified and illiterate. Uses overseas staff to write emails in English!

If you can join the meeting remotely (meaning not from the same conference room where the meeting is going to be), then invite someone from HR to sit with you in a different conference room and join the meeting. Put your computer on speakerphone during the meeting so the HR personal can also listen in on the meeting. Then let that HR personal deal with the issue. If the manager tries to remove you from the group, then sue the company cause now you have the proof of HR sitting in on the meeting and the manager continues to speak in their native language which causes others to be excluded. If the HR person or manager denies it that this didn't happen, then tell the lawyers to force them to take a lie detector test. Or call the HR in USA and have them deal with the issue of discrimination and exclusion and unfair corporate practices.

Chase does not need talent; we aren't a product based company.
That's why they buy dirt cheap labor from India and most jobs are offshored.
My team got rid of 3 subteams which was gobbled up by 5 teams in India.
I'm trying to move out.
When your ed and vp is telugu with your skip in India, never ever join that team especially if you're not indian.
It's a dead end career su----e.
They will give you bad ratings and also block you from all meetings to prevent you from doing productive work.
I learned this too late.

Same here.
My mgr spoke telugu in front of me every day for 2 months.
He was a new guy who joined about 4 months ago.
It was so obvious he spoke telugu on purpose since I was non-indian person.
It's discrimination at its best but I don't feel bad cause India is a sh**thole country anyway.
I joined big tech 3 months later and thank God for this!
