Relocation

Just as an FYI, housing in Dallas is very tight and expensive! Over $400k and it will come with at least a 30 min. commute. North Dallas is extremely expensive with a very congested commute.

$600 a month in child care is cheap compared to Atlanta.

I’m in the kennesaw GA area and it’s over $300 per week (per child) here. And it’s just an average, run of the mill type place

Served my time, relocated 4 times with the company. Now sitting in one of the 2 main hub locations. Relocation is a loyalty test. Are you committed?

You know what they say about loyalty? Why would any of us be loyal to a company that shows us no loyalty back? I'm sorry, but you're wrong. You're not a loyal employee, not in their eyes. You're simply a tool.

If you are planning on moving, apply for a different higher paying position. Make it worth your while if you are willing to move.

The house foundations in the DFW area have some big problems due to the expansive clay soil there. Earthquake homes from California look to be in better shape. And just wait until you are paying the 3 pct property tax rate in DFW with valuations rising 10-20 pct each year !

To live in a majority neighborhood with good schools you’re going to spend $700k with an hour commute.

400K with 2.9% interest is not the same as 400K with 7%+ too.

It depends where you’re coming from. 400k may get you a shack in the Inland Empire in SoCal. Which is a hellish commute.

I’m not a manager but I wish those who decide to relocate the best of luck. It’s going to be a new adventure that’s for sure.

ALL of Management at AT&T can afford a $400k home. I have been here long enough to know.

You are absolutely full of cr-p. Go find an online mortgage calculator. A lot of L2 in the SE are lucky if they make 125. With 125, only $600/mo in child care, car loans, credit card debt, student loans and alimony, and 50k downpayment, you'd barely get near the south side of 400k. And a lot of those calculators overestimate what THEY think people can afford.

Make sure you have a home inspection on the AC and slab . The AC runs 24/7 in the summer and slabs can crack with the hot weather. Sleet and ice in the winter is a total disaster with no snow removal equipment.

I moved to Dallas 10 years ago with a day of move relo package. Moved to Collin county. Commute was not bad but 7 years later it was a nightmare with all the new builds north of Dallas (Frisco, Plano and farther). Left TX in 2022 with retirement. I would not want to move back there now with commute and housing prices soaring. AT&T location was nice along with sports and concerts. Much better than NJ prices for tickets. I guess I am too old now to deal with all the shenanigans.

Nobody wants to hear about global warming but the intrinsic fact is that higher temps makes you more irritable. Just think about this in your own life. You feel more cranky when the weather goes from a perfect 72 degree weather to 95. I'm sure the people of Texas that grew up in that kind of environment is used to it by now but the people coming from CA or NJ, fuggetaboutit.

There are studies that confirm crime rises with temps.
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/higher-temperatures-can-lead-to-more-violent-crimes-especially-in-poorer-neighborhoods-2019-06-18

From a financial standpoint, remember an L2 staff in CA or NJ might be making as much as an Associate Director or even Director in Dallas. I doubt you will be getting any pay raises because they can justify the cost of living is lower in Dallas. In the end, you are losing out of money because you are paying for the relocation costs yourself, not getting a raise, maybe even a cut to match TX employees, and you will be hot and miserable, worried about getting into a gunfight over an argument and have to carry yourself, increasing the chances of getting into said gunfight and if you are female or have daughters, fuggetaboutit.

dont forget texas doesnt play when it comes to defending and protecting. right to carry with or without a permit . keep your tempers in check during rush hour be polite and courteous. probably should just rent for a year or 2 to make sure you are not going to be laid off right after you have relocated.

Dallas is a segrated red lined city anything above highway I-30 (google it) where the majority of white folks live. South of i-30 is where POC live. Anything in collin county is 90 percent white and mostly new builds. will be a pain to drive to work if you are based towards downtown dallas or fort worth. discrimination is low key that if you are not keen to it you will miss it and will be denied housing.

“ He probably thinks a great relo package is a BBQ sauce sampler and a prepaid LD card to call your friends and family left behind.“

I mean, I know you’re trying to be funny and all but the sad thing is that even this is overstating what the relocation benefit actually is for L2 and below.

There are BBQ sampler baskets? Probably only available if we leave a favorable review on Glassdoor.

So many sterotypes and assumptions!

Poster before was right though. Moving into Dallas from a higher-priced area will be "cheaper." But if you're coming from a smaller market in the SE or some other areas of the country/middle America, it will be more expensive than your current area. Truthfully, moving will probably only "work" or even be feasible for single people with no young kids, or higher management levels who may get relocation and are more secure in their positions (not being eliminated in the next 1-24 months) than the bulk of us anyway.

No sense in posting links and tales of crime, racism, and general bad behavior because pretty much every place has that now. Anybody could find some horrifying news event from any given place.

"Wow! $400,000 is cheap! "

because it's still 100 degrees at night. the "lower" cost of a home will easily be offset by the $1k monthly electricity bill - if you even get it, when it's either freezing or when it's the hottest. I know you're coming from either side of the coast if you think $400k is cheap but it's cheap because you're landlocked and your neighbors might shoot you with their AK47 if your dog barks too loud.

“ Mr. Businessman over here. Maybe you can explain, from the business perspective, why it makes sense to force people to relocate to another state to do the job they've been doing just fine from their home office for years?”

Because the company doesn’t think you are as important, as you think you are. They don’t actually want you to relocate, they don’t want you to work here at all.

If the company asked you to relocate to keep your job, but we know some were able to remain virtual, then you know what the company thinks of you or the work you do.

At this point, it’s just sad you don’t get it.

“From a business perspective, it just doesn’t make sense to cover relocation for positions easy to fill.”

Then you should be upfront and honest that the company believes in throwing all business ethics out the window. It’s like working to put your spouse through medical school only to have them divorce you afterwards and sc--w the kids out of child support.

So "John" is simply lying through his teeth to Bloomberg about ATT having 'GREAT RELOCATION PACKAGES"...he stated it clearly, guess he's just a bald faced liar?

No, come on now, don't lie... they DO have Great Relocations Packages, just not for us, plebs. I'm sure that guy from Detroit, whatever his name is, Miller?.. I'm sure he got a great one, so he can now lecture all of us about the benefits of collaboration. Then there is Legg, who flat out stated he's not relocating, can't inconvenience HIS family like that, you know? He'll just fly business class to Dallas when they "need him there".

I've got 4 days left, boys. 3, really, with a holiday. Thank God!

Relocation packages should only be offered for employees with truly critical skills in high demand. Most employees have common skills that can be easily replaced in the target hubs. From a business perspective, it just doesn’t make sense to cover relocation for positions easy to fill.

LMAO $400k is NOT expensive. Housing is cheap in Dallas especially for a large city. Of course, prices have not appreciated much in the last several years because land availability is high and new housing continues at a high pace.
