Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Saint Louis Location for Technology

Hello All,
I am on technology since 2013 but in past week our team have seen some layoff due to location strategy. My manager assures me Saint louis is safe even it’s not core location but WIM and other tech area are there but at this point really not feeling safe. Anyone have any insights to share?

@r4+1jnp6t3wz Really? If they are no longer maintaining an ICC presence in STL, that seems huge. It used to be a major hub for ICC as you had a lot of licensed employees in STL with strong institutional knowledge as people moved into ICC from other back office roles, etc.

St. Louis is not safe for tech. It is no longer a hub for tech, thanks to the JPM people in Columbus, it is now only a specialty market for very few groups. The writing has been written on the wall for tech in STL for over 2 years when they started removing STL as a hiring location. I am slated to be laid off in April, but I don’t know which week.

Just because STL is a hub doesn’t mean they will keep things there. They told the entire ICC (contact center) people in WIM they were eliminating those jobs in STL last week. Will keep it based in Charlotte & salt lake. There are 26 total jobs posted for St. Louis & 290 for N Carolina/charlotte. Tells you all you need to know to know about the long term future of St. Louis.

The security incident was a nothing burger. They happen about once a decade over the three decades I have been here.

The bigger issue was coked out brokers getting caught snorting lines in the restrooms whenever they had events at the HQ.

STL don’t want to offer us tax breaks to keep the jobs there

@e5+1jnp6t3wz . do you think they will bring jobs to STL campus after the recent security incident. St.louis downtown is unsafe place to work

They need to bring all the IT jobs to St.Louis location. The city desperately needs tax money to repair the crumbling roads.

But St. Louis isn’t even a core market for WIM tech. It is a specialty market, which means no growth. WFA is only part of WIM.

St. Louis was literally dumped as a core market because of one exec who didn’t want to move. But that shouldn’t be surprising because HY is a core market now only because Scharf didn’t want to move.

Unless it's WIM IT. Having WIM IT in Columbus would be pointless

I really hate "good for me, not for thee executives". They are the worst kind of failed leaders. If they don't want to go to a hub they either simply don't or they create a new fake hub so that they are 'compliant'. F every single one of them.

"Mike Brady does not like that are a significant number of employees over age 50 in the St. Louis location".

And how did you learn of this "fact"?

If you want to know what happened to St. Louis, it was on the core market list until very late when the list was being made.

There was a tech exec from JPMorgan that came over to WF and was working out of the Columbus office with a small handful of IT people (roughly 15-20). The tech exec did not want to move (JPMorgan had a tech hub in Columbus). He led negotiations with Columbus for a tax break if a tech hub was created there, and they agreed. Columbus was added as a core tech location and St. Louis was removed at the last minute.

So if you are in St. Louis tech and are getting laid off, you can thank a Columbus based tech exec for it. He didn’t want to move.

St Louis is a specialty market for tech. However under tech, each TLT got to determine which core/specialty markets they would use.

St. Louis was not selected as a specialty market for many tech TLTs like Cyber and CTO. So outside of WIM tech, expect most in St. Louis to be laid off at some point.

Nothing is safe. Anyone telling you that is just trying to ensure you remain productive.

The next ‘BIG’ location strategy based displacements are planned for early April 2025, particularly CTO. Mike Brady does not like that are a significant number of employees over age 50 in the St. Louis location.

Sometimes, there are just layoffs for none of those reasons. A month ago, WIM whacked a couple people in STL. A good portion of others were WLS related, but there were some in STL.

At this bank, especially in tech, don't believe anyone. Don't trust anyone even if they have been good. Prepare to be castaway at any time and for any reason.

I'm in a non-core location for tech, not part of WIM. They stated in clear terms you will be offered relocation or lay off. In the past 12 months, I've lost a coworker who was not offered relo but no one ever shared why. He was an important part of our larger team, well experienced and was a big blow to our team. A few months ago coworker also in tech was offered relocation. Management is doesn't seem to know or cannot share why one was offered relo, the other wasn't.

I am not worried about it because it only impacts technology employees (I am not in tech). Hopefully they can get rid of all the HIB employees.
