Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Wrong priorities

Isn't it sad that the longer you're at Nike, the higher your chances of being laid off? At other companies, tenure is something that's considered an advantage, not a disadvantage. It's frustrating that my anxiety regarding layoffs increases the longer I've been here when it should be the opposite.

Tenure is absolutely nothing.

Claiming that long tenure makes someone better is faultly logic in the information age. There are some areas where long tenure is advantageus but with this much technological change it only creates dinasours.

It is nice to cull to dinasours from time to time to let new life flourish.

That is why HR is a curicial function to determine who to cull. You eliminate people who peaked and you continue to sustain people who have tenour and still show growth.

No particular person should occupy a seat more than 5 years unless they demonstrated growth in the past 2 years. Once they peak and start to wither than you chop them off so the rest of the tree can grow.

It's not sad that those with tenure are let go. Those employees, just like all others, have groups that are contributing to the business and groups that are just keeping their head down and collecting a paycheck. What is sad is that there is not any type of analysis on who should be let go. I know in April, my team lost three great senior leaders while those that are still here are more focused on their success versus anyone in the team. We need to rely less on consultants and more on an actual business strategy the makes us competitive again while we recreate a culture that folks actually enjoy coming to work to.

Tenure can be a factor if you’re either seen as too expensive for your role or less productive than in prior years. I’ve seen people let go for both reasons.

It’s one of the primary reasons I voluntarily left last year. If you’re over 40 at Nike and making a salary that you likely wouldn’t receive at other employers in the region, that’s not a good spot in which to be. I knew that described me so I left on my own terms. I now make less money but my quality of life dramatically improved. At my current job I now have much better job security and everybody keeps a healthy distance between their work lives and personal lives. It’s a great place to work. It’s just that nobody acts like their job defines them as a person. We work 40 hours per week and go home, where we then do NOT check our email or stay connected to work. In that regard it’s been a very nice and healthy change from Nike.

Speaking of Nike I believe it will need to continue strategically shrinking headcount to deal with the new market reality that Nike’s consistent 7-8% annual growth rates are probably over. While no one should spend too much time worrying since that won’t help anything, everyone definitely should have a ‘plan B’ in case they finally meet the brutal layoff hammer. Rather than mass layoffs I would anticipate smaller, continuous rolling layoffs that impact different orgs at different times. In one sense that’s actually worse than mass layoffs because you likely won’t see it coming. That’s why everyone needs to plan for the unexpected.

I really don’t think that’s the case. Our team was gutted last year and everyone who was saved had tenure and relationships to pull them into a new space.there were super talented people who had just joined a year or two ago who were pushed out because no one was advocating for them and their experience outside of Nike tended to be discredited.
