Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Were there any layoffs today, or only promotions/demotions?

Just curious if anyone was laid off today?

@wos I’m not saying they should keep the exact same job I’m saying that if they are worth keeping they shouldn’t be punished by the failures of the company.

If somebody is underperforming do you think demoting them is all of a sudden going to get them to performing on par? Unlikely. This person should be let go.

If they are performing at the expected level or above the expected level, then a lateral move should be found for them, or they should be coded to allow them to keep their salary and title. Anything else is injustice and almost certainly will lead to diminished performance.

This isn’t a tiny company. There is always space if somebody is willing to advocate for it.

Three Senior Director roles in a product-related function literally got created out of thin air a few weeks ago. The externals that got these jobs didn’t go through a competitive interview. They were created because the leaders of those functions wanted them.

@hun it is not an injustice. Sometimes a person is a great and the role is no longer needed. You think an org needs to keep every role it has ever created? It makes sense to find new roles for great talent and give them the option of staying or going. In your world Nike would still be supporting countless processes and digital products that the brand has long since moved on from and no one even thinks about anymore.

@yxa you don’t have to be laid off or demoted to see the total nonsense and injustice of the entire thing.

If somebody is awful at your job, show them the door.

If somebody is worth keeping, keep them, as is.

@ofy - I have only been in my role one year and they eliminated the band level on my team, leading to a demotion because there are a few other people on my team that have been with the company 15-20 years that absolutely deserve to level up before I do. I feel like anyone in the forum complaining about demotions weren't offered a role at all in the last phase. Why else would they be so bitter?

@txp Not having a role available is a CHOICE, not an inevitability.

Most of the people being given demotion or exit offers aren’t newly promoted. They’ve been in role for a long time.

For the few that were over promoted, the person/people that made the hiring decision should be the ones impacted.

I know of someone that was demoted and moved to a new role today.

demotions aren't about saving money, they are about offering to keep an employee that you would prefer to keep, but don't have a role available at the level they were at previously. A LOT of people got promoted that really shouldn't have been in the past 2-3 years. Lots of D that made SD that were not needed or not doing SD roles. It's really just moving them back to where they should be.

@fwk the whole thing is fake though. The fiscal impact of letting people keep their title and their salary is a drop in the bucket, even if there are hundreds of people in question.

There are X slots because Bain decided there were X slots, not because of some throughly researched plan to create maximum efficiency and clean business operations.

There could as easily be X+1 slots.

Demotion or Exit is coward’s behavior intended to sow the culture of fear and show people who is boss.

@eve - what an over-simplified and crass response. Let’s think about this for a sec. You have 7 roles at the same level that have been eliminated. Org has been restructured, giving you 4 open roles to fill - 2 promotions and 2 demotions for this specific group of individuals. But you have 5 of them are high performers. You have to make some tough decisions. Maybe one of them is top talent but newer in their role for only a year or has never had direct reports, that person will likely get the demotion (salary stays the same, btw) while the tenured employee gets a promotion. Doesn’t mean anyone su-ks, but we’re losing roles here, not gaining. Decisions have to be made.

How bad do you need to be to have the conversation on demotion? And how would that go?

HR: you sûck so bad

HR: we need to demote you or you done

Emp: Wait, I sück but you want me to stay?

HR: yeah, I mean, there are worse, we are letting them go, so feel lucky you are only half as sűck as they are

Emp: I think I’ll take the demotion, thank you so much. Can I sůck J to the D’s now?

Typo… The consensus is that it’s “get demoted OR get fired” today, answers due Monday.

Layoffs with no option on Monday too.

New roles Tuesday to Thursday.
