Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Take charge of your life

Why are so many waiting to be laid off instead of taking charge of their lives and finding something better right away?

To a couple of posts below: once again “the job market” is not a monolithic thing that’s the same for everyone. It’s highly individual and takes into account your skill set, experience, ability to market yourself, and even factors that shouldn’t matter like age, gender or race.

Some people who are terminated will quickly find other jobs. Some will spend 12+ months looking and still come up empty. Generic proclamations that “the job market s*cks” are neither useful nor accurate.

Pro-Nike Corruption Troll:

Get the f out of here. We can’t give ideas at work, we can’t speak of this trivial time we are in and now your are policing our online speech?

If only our leaders at Nike could put this much effort into selling shoes as they do keeping employees quiet.

Oh look, it’s another Nike employee in charge of our image, trying to put the blame on us.

Wake up, the managers are being promoted based on how well they kiss the a-s of the person above them. Not merit, not talent, not ability. Just friends who have kewl personalities and no skills.

@zxs+1qCbHEnj Better to rant online, or stalk and troll others ranging online?

I agree with OP. People think by ranting online will go ANYWHERE! So delusional yet so funny. Just enjoy their misery while they complain and move on. Nothing will change just because they rant online. Smart folks move on and life will be grand.

My time served is worth money. Why would I preemptively walk away from tens of thousands of dollars?

“You’re not breaking up with me (and paying me severance)! I’m breaking up with you! (And making myself ineligible for unemployment).”

You forgot to mention competitors pay 50% less for the same or more work.

@pso+1qCbHEnj Because the job market su-ks and it can take a year or longer to get a job.

@eni+1qCbHEnj Unemployment isn’t the best representation unless you’re segmenting by industries. Sure I can work 3 minimum wage jobs to scrape by, but finding something that isn’t a career ki-ler doesn't seem to be an option right now

Hey OP - How many roles have you applied to and gotten an interview? Or any communication at all for that matter. The job market su-ks but thanks.

Get laid off. Ride severance, unemployment & COBRA for a few moths. Sounds like a great way to R&R while looking for the next gig. Not sure why anyone would do anything different if you work in a place layoffs are on the horizon.

Regarding the job market, the local unemployment rate in Portland is 3.4%, while the national rate is 3.7%. This compares to historic average local rates of 5.93% and 5.7% for the past 60+ years.

In 2008 and 2009, at the height of the Great Recession, the local unemployment rate in Portland soared to more than 15% for more than 18 months. There were layoffs everywhere during that time, including at Nike. I worked for a different company then, which imploded and I was laid off. It was scary, but I found a new gig that paid more after 8 months. Most people that get laid off now are getting new jobs much quicker than that. The economy is doing better than most people think and there are lots of opportunities out there.

My point is that layoffs are not fun and nobody wants to go through that stress. However, if it happens, you will move on and likely end up in a better spot down the line. I agree with the OP that if you are really worried, take control by getting your resume ready and putting yourself out there now before Nike makes a decision. What's the worst that can happen by interviewing elsewhere?

Geezus...what's with the lack of empathy? Most of us won't get laid off. Some of us will. It's the anxiety and uncertainty that is mostly affecting people. My preference is to stay. Why not wait to see what will happen? If I am laid off, I will move on. I am sure everyone who gets affected will be just fine, but we don't deserve this in the meantime.
