US bank regulator fines 3 former Wells Fargo executives for roles in sales scandal

WASHINGTON, Sept 21 (Reuters) - A U.S. bank regulator announced Monday it had fined three former executives at Wells Fargo Bank for their roles in the company's long-running sales practices scandal.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency announced it had imposed a $925,000 fine on Matthew Raphaelson, the former community bank group finance officer, and barred him from the banking industry. It also imposed a $400,000 fine on Kenneth Zimmerman, the bank's former head of community bank deposit products group, and a $350,000 fine on Tracy Kidd, the former head of community bank human resources.

@egk I am not sure D&O policies cover wrongdoing or if you are found to have violated laws or regs. I think they just cover negligence and general stupidity.

What about the Software Manager over the banking platform? They run metrics. Don't tell me they didn't know about all the fake accounts being opened up. This is at a lower level, but that needs to be cleaned up as well - from top to bottom!

The guy that replaced Zimmerman needs to be next. He allows the same c-ap to go on. Refuses to address anything that get uncovered, passes the buck and blames the branches.

KZ was great. I know he was uncomfortable with Carrie and co. MR is probably asperger’s. Somehow i think the guy could not grasp what was going on. KZ knew there was something going on and was uncomfortable with all of it, thus he left. But the guy knew deposits like no other person and was sharp. KZ was not drinking the kool-aid, MR was drinking it by the gallons.

If you were not close to the branches you didn't know what was going on

@gmi, the money goes to the regulatory body. such a waste. there is a report online where they disclose what they spend it on. its id–tic bc they are hiring tons of ppl prior to covid and WHAT FOR?!? They cut back on all their regulations due to the current administration’s policies. its so bad that employees have been blocked from doing their jobs and they have been leaving and joining state jobs where they can oversee our policies like the AG’s office. I feel they should break it up and send it to the customers like a class action. so ridiculous!

Raphaelson and basically every leader in his group was terrible. Good riddance.

I agree with @xeo, would rather see them go to jail.

Was disappointed to find out that these execs all have insurance policies to protect them when they are found to be at fault. Also, a corporation often pays their legal fees. So... this likely has not cost them a dime personally.

I'd rather see jail time for these people.

Excellent! Hope they don't stop there. Much more corruption to be unearthed and addressed.

The wheels of justice might be slow, but please let them keep turning.

Where does the fine $$$ go? To victims of WF greed and corruption, I hope.

KZ was a major jerk, especially to folks in digital. (His own team mostly had Stockholm Syndrome, it was weird to watch.) I thought he slipped out the back door in time to escape any penalties – guess not.
