Thread regarding Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. layoffs

Need to be laid off - Balvinder

So much churn here, it is looking like mixer grinder on full speed. And perfect timing also with in-person work is starting soon, and now we have a new SVP with full “I have a PhD in retail/store” energy. Apparently he is telling us Jack himself recruited him. Very God. Very VIP. Please bow and clap.

But one small clarification: this Sprouts, not Walmart. Budget is not unlimited, people are not lining up to suffer, and nobody is waiting for some retail professor to come and save the day.

People already do not want to work with him. Existing employees are looking. New hires are ghosting after talking to him.

He is in for a rude awakening. Organic. Locally sourced, and very expensive

Thanks again for the intros. and contact information. As you know, following the threads and doing the reporting properly takes a little time.

So far, the people you connected me with have been candid and professional. Nobody seemed interested in simply taking shots at Mr. Balvinder. Still, I’m hearing a recurring concern: several described him as relatively green for the position, with some estimating that he is years shy of the experience they would normally expect at that level. Others pointed to a need for basic leadership development. A few senior HR leaders have voiced similar concerns off the record.

One recently departed leader was considerably more blunt. He said he left in search of stronger leadership and was deeply disappointed by what he described as Balvinder’s lack of leadership. He also pointed to a pattern he found troubling: when challenged or when things weren’t going his way, Balvinder would repeatedly invoke Jack’s name rather than take ownership himself.

I’ve continued speaking with candidates as well. One told me, “My experience with the Sprouts team was very positive overall. My conversation with Balvinder was different in tone and style.”

I’ve contacted Mr. Balvinder to hear his side and give him a fair opportunity to respond, but I haven’t heard back yet.

For now, I’ll keep working the phones. Similar concerns are coming from enough different directions that there appears to be more context worth understanding. I’d rather take the time to get it right than rush to a conclusion.

@796 well now, Iain, whatever happened to good ol’ fashioned reporting? We gave you the contact info - which, bless our hearts, maybe we shouldn’t have. Did they both suddenly decided they weren’t interested in your follow-up? Just curious, sugar… because HR sure seems mighty interested 🤪

@92s Yep, that’s already in play… He keeps ba----g on about how he knows Nick, sees him fairly regularly, and that Jack’s already introduced the two of them. And apparently he’s the CTO’s neighbor now as well. Honestly, is there anyone he doesn’t know? The name-dropping is getting a bit tiresome. Someone’s clearly in need is a bit of mentoring and a crash course in Leadership 101.

@1ed I do wonder what he will say to wriggle his way around this one. Apparently, the chap who recruited him his retiring. Do keep an eye on the inevitable pivot towards Nick name-dropping. Quite the plot twist, this.

@2q6 Hi, this is Ian Arwin from GeekW. I wanted to follow up and see if you or someone from Sprouts (SFM) HR would be open to speaking with me. If any of the interviewees would like to share their side of the story, I’d appreciate and intro. name. All can remain anonymous in my piece if they prefer.

@4bg We were back East not too long ago, and bless his heart, he was the talk of the town for all the wrong reasons. Folks are startin’ to wonder what in the world is really goin’ on.

Any reasons for deleting this Admin? These are facts listed on his LinkedIn

I actually tracked him up on LinkedIn just to see what all the noise was about. This fellow seriously…

Nine months at Kellogg is now apparently being presented like a degree, EB1A recipient is being treated as an executive credentials, and Retail Technology Executive is repeated in case the first five labels didn’t land.

FYI. EB1A is an immigrant title towards getting a green card - not a professional title or executive classification.

At this point, why stop there? Add - PhD ins store & retail, personally recruited by the CEO, with honors in CV inflation and minor is self-awareness.

@2q6 it sounds like some of you have been involved in interviewing these candidates. Would you be willing to share their names so we can confirm whether this discussion is accurate? I am sure they would be comfortable sharing their experiences directly with HR.

@1ed Did Jim know what he said, “we’re free to do what we want in here”? No wonder he’s already talking about retirement. It almost seems like the CEO (Jack) forced this hire on him.

If I were setting the odds, I’d pit the over/under at one year…. Either he’ll be canned or he’ll quit.

@de agreed but how often do your hear our CTO reminds us that he was hired by Jack? They actually worked together!

We had two exceptionally strong candidates in the process, and after speaking with him, both decided (he was the NO) not to move forward. Each raised concerns, either directly or indirectly, about his collaboration style, leadership approach, and overall attitude.

Hearing such consistent feedback from two high-caliber candidates is difficult to overlook and raises serious concerns about his ability to lead effectively and build strong working relationships.

I was speaking with him the other day, and he casually said that before joining, he was recruited by Jack, the CEO, along with Jim, and that the three of them sat down and “ironed things out with HR.” My first reaction: how is this relevant to our chat?

His response was, “We are free to do what we want in here.” I wonder if HR is even aware of this, or if they are simply choosing to avoid getting involved. At this point, waiting for my stock to vest so I can move on to something normal, without this whole “I am Jack’s chosen one” mentality.

There is nothing wrong with being proud that the CEO recruited and hired you. That can be a legitimate path for finding strong talent. But repeatedly using it as proof of political capital with your team and peers is exhausting and honestly gives off a weird stalker feel. Get a clue! You’re not as good as you think, and this culture will humble you very quickly. He won’t last long here unless Jack and HR plans on changing the culture just to make room for him

Girl,I am not sure why that similar comment I replied to got removed, because where was the lie? He’s been a disaster, every Sprouite knows it, and now it looks like management is just removing comments to save face after a massive blunder.
