Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Pulse Fear Mongering (don't fall for it)

Imagine, if you will, a world where a survey can give a clear view of improvement or decline in how employees view leadership and the overall health of a company.

Imagine that the survey responses are collected by Gallup, who has been in business since 1935 and is widely recognized as one of the most credible analytics and advisory firms in the world. A company that tracks individual survey links or access codes on the backend to prevent duplicate submissions and route data correctly and any identifying data is permanently walled off from the submitter's employer. That company's reputation would be destroyed if they identified who submitted the surveys.

If Gallup didn't know who you were then people could put as many surveys in as they want and stuff the ballot box like mail-in votes. Oops... better stop there. They have to be able to tell the company that an entire organization or department has so little care that they haven't submitted 7 out of 10 possible surveys. How would they know that? Because the employer says here is our email list and the departments they work for, please tell us the percentage of surveys submitted so we will know by their silence if there are leadership issues.

If Gallup exposed the individuals then a nearly 100 year old company's reputation would be ruined.

The work around is for an employer is to ask for optional long form answers that are only shown to managers with more than 10 direct reports.

But who do those managers show it to? I have been personally asked if I submitted certain answers. It has also been suggested that I submitted answers over the years that I would think I had submitted because they sounded like something I would have written.

Oh, did I forget to mention that some of the directors have read the long form answers on All Hands calls? I don't think I'm the only one who had slack and jabber start pinging with people claiming to know who the submitter was.

And Gallup has formatted the survey to isolate questions to each level of management to target which levels are declining and which are in improving.

They also group good and bad responses by organizations. So bad customer service managers don't affect good supply chain managers and vice versa.

If I am a manager at any level, I want you to think we know who you are and that "straight fives will keep you alive" and other BS answers to dupe you into thinking you're saving yourself.

Wake up!! Straight fives saves the leadership that needs to be gone.

And if I am a company sycophant then I am going to go on every forum and tell everybody that "straight fives will keep you alive".

I have given honest detailed surveys for years. I know there is a character count in the long form because others have said in meetings that they had too carefully edit them to get under the limit. And I am still here and they are still here. But all of our managers at the top are gone or moved and the direct manager, who is good, is still there.

That rips apart any of the claims that people are posting right now to the contrary. You don't have to believe it but it's a fact.

Think about it. Do they need a survey to get rid of you? They don't need any reason other than your name came up in the layoff lottery. And because they get a chance to review and provide feedback on the list, if you are kissing your boss's Southern Ring, they will make sure your name is removed from that list. Or will they?

They are afraid you will answer in a way that exposes them for the shams they are.

So remember:
"Straight fives keeps leadership alive"

@vb I see you still can't read a post without thinking of men in pa-ties. For the last time I will not let you pick them out with your tongue. God only knows where you've had it.

@t4 That's ok. Not everyone can be expected to have an attention span greater than a fruit fly. The good news is that Verizon proudly claims it's AI can summarize and read it to you as though you were five years old. But I am sure you can lower that to meet your level.

You're just another statistic to management.

I think what the positive pulse only crowd is saying is:

If you love your leadership to the top, vote positive and keep your leadership to the top and you may or may not get laid off.

If you DO NOT love your leadership to the top, vote positive and keep your leadership to the top and you still may or may not get laid off.

Now that I read that back it looks like leadership to the top is the only group that wins with that kind of philosophy.

Maybe they are betting that by kissing rear ends, they will be exempt from being laid off, which is kinda sad. Aren't those types the weasels who support the evil empire in almost every book, movie, TV show and game. And I think they almost always get it worse in the end.

But who am I to judge someone being their authentic selves? I hope they get everything they deserve for all of their hard work.

@em Well said. I think maybe @ed's use of the phrase "Izzat chasing" betrays them as well

DO NOT BE HONEST ON THE PULSE SURVEY! I got whacked out after 25 years and the only reason I can think of is that is was honest on the last Pulse survey. Do not mess with Izzat chasing.

@d5 What you've had, you'll get more of the same unless you are in the minority but your odds of winning the layoff lottery haven't changed. All you did was improve your leadership's odds of staying. Hope you like them. As if this was even a serious post.

On reflection, if a leadership line is consistently scored low by every shared downline but one or two, I am going to flag the one or two as a potential problem where people are possibly being coached on the straight 5 stay alive mantra and start digging a little deeper there. Hmmmm. Might be time to start another consulting company.

@aa Attention attention, Post ID: @aa+1m2s22xhk has lost his nads and started confronting people anonymously. This has also led to a craving for pumpkin spice lattes

If they are found, please return them ASAP.

They are presumed to be small so look carefully so you don't step on them.

Thank you for your help with this matter.

@aa Is that you bashing anonymously on a forum and admitting to being a keyboard warrior p*$$y for doing it?

Firstly, one person named names and backed it up when it was thought they kept quiet.

Secondly, another recommends reporting when reporting is appropriate. And Verizon requires it to be reported or you will be held responsible. Verizon has that in writing and you take training on it a couple of times a year.

Thirdly, I hope there isn't a fourthly because I don't know if that is a word, the post is about filling out the pulse survey to hold leadership accountable. You can't directly confront there if you wanted to other than in the long form and that is warned against by.... Wait for it.... Verizon and Gallup, for obvs reasons.

Fourthly, oh sh!t, well it's a word now if it wasn't before, I prefer 6oz of Café Bustelo poured from a stovetop espresso maker with a little honey and 1oz of fresh whipped heavy whipping cream like God intended. Had to stop the non filtered Camels 15 years ago but I will be buried with the bean in my system to feed the bugs that will compost me as much caffeine as possible while they are doing it. I encourage efficiency and productivity even in death.

@aa you think these leaders arent bashing people for no reason and getting them fired?

Yes- bash people anonymously- the true manly way to handle the problem. You can thumbs down but you know that's a cowardly action. There's another word for people like that and it starts with a P and ends with a Y... have some nads and confront if you truly feel that wronged by someone. Or, be a keyboard warrior while you drink your lactose free, not fat, grande pumpkin spice.

@a7 Can't speak. Coworker was accused of not reporting something after corporate found out they knew about it.

My dude said "I told everyone!" and started loading their inbox with every email they bcc'd themselves . Took a while and don't know what is on paper but everyone that covered up what he reported is gone or in another org. And they still here gittin it done.

It was explained when I saw a folder named "Cover Your 6" during a screenshare. LOL

Now I bcc everything and keep a Just In Case folder myself.

OP is right. Report every bad leader you can. If you get pulled aside, document evidence of intimidation.

Bring all the receipts. Be intentional about getting these people fired. Dont report one person, report them all if they deserve it. Is there a cartel running your department? report it. does their behavior date back over multiple periods? report it.

Ive lived and breathed this failing and succeeding. I know both sides. Do it. these people are heartless and will get rid of you anyway.

there is more risk if a bad leader is in place and its easy to get rid of them.

Dan wants reasons to fire bigwigs. Help a man out!
