Every business is about relationships. Business school teaches you business is about relationships. Then get mad when one of the most successful businesses isn’t about merit but… SURPRISE! About relationships.

I’ve worked at merit based companies where bonus and promotions are tied to performance and still when it comes down to 2 equally qualified individuals, it always goes to the relationships.

@1mjl+1tjHB80q It is not about being important to Nike. It is about whether or not you put the work in, the output does not change or reflect your effort. Consider a sales man in a car dealership, the more effort they put in, the more reward they take home. I am a software engineer. There are millions of us in U.S. Prior to joining Nike, I worked at another fortune company. The CFE and the promotion path were directly calibrated based on your performance. You put in the effort, you get a bigger bonus, you are promoted. It is hard to argue that performance based promotion do exist at Nike.

@1mjl+1tjHB80q I agree with you but I do not think the commenter meant he or she should be important to Nike. I get what they are saying. Basically, whether you actually do the work or you do not do anything at all does not matter at all. You can show up at 8. Work hard, blah blah or you can roll in at 10 am, take 2 hrs of lunch and leave before 3 and still the system does not care. Some people like this and some, often high performers, do not like it. But yeah I agree with you that in any company, Nike or not, we are all hired help for corporate America

LOL!!! Congrats. That’s an entirely new level of “oblivious”, even for this website.

Please let me clue you in on something that was obviously never shared with you. At a company as large as Nike there are maybe only a dozen or so employees who could be called “important”. By design no other single individuals are ever “important”. You are hired help. Labor. A literal number on a spreadsheet.

Yes, please do leave Nike. When you do, if you need another reminder of how not important you are then remember this: within a week of you leaving exactly no one will remember you worked there at all. People come, people go, life moves on. Nike was fine before you arrived. It’ll be fine after you leave. Because guess what? You aren’t important at Nike.

@1hia+1tjHB80q instead of taking the opportunity your manager was let go to learn to step up and LEAD yourself it sounds like you’re unable and need specific direction to succeed.

Glad you have offers, and your role will soon be open. Grass isn’t always greener btw. Really depends if you want to work in sports or this is just another “job” for you.

Nothing in your post suggest you liked your job at Nike because it was meaningful or it was making a change. You loved the job because it was easy and you could skip a few hours of job and no one care! Did you unskilled? OR you just got used to your cushy paycheck and easy easy absentee work?

@1vhr+1tjHB80q I do not want a micro manager and a time card stupid! I want A manager! He was let go in phase 2 and it has been more tha 2 months now that I have zero direction! All the projects we have finished suddenly were discarded! due to shift in management! Oh and yes I actually have two job offers at the moment! Waiting for background check and start date! You see those lazy a-s like youself would love to have their job at Nike NOT because it is meaningful but because it is easy and you have no other skills to survive outside of the berm. But talented folks like me are confident we can find job and thatbwe deserve better! Because we have skills

And if your want in life is a time card and a micro manager, there are plenty of opportunities out there.

Are you tied to Nike with golden handcuffs or having trouble finding another job? Why can’t you leave If it’s that easy? Seriously, LEAVE. There are plenty of talented people who were let go over the last 8 months who will gladly take your place. Volunteer for the next round , and start doing it now. Start looking, and get out.

No one is forcing you to stay, so stop whining. The team doesn’t need your entitled poor me attitude right now anyways.

Yes I can disappear for 2 hours and show up at 10 am with a Starbucks coffee at Nike and no one blink an eye.... You see what is the problem? I AM NOT IMPORTANT AT NIKE! NO ONE CARES ABOUT WHAT I DO OR IF I DON'T DO ANYTHING AT ALL!
I have not worked my tail off for an advanced degree to became this much unimportant!

Hey OP, tell me you’ve never been laid off before without saying you’ve never been laid off.

Only someone who has never experienced a layoff before would imagine that it’s a magical, fun experience filled with pots of severance gold, all work problems relieved, and not a care in the world.

Back in reality, losing your job is devastating for most people. First there’s the emotional aspect of being told that - even though you’ve poured your heart and soul into your work and the company for more than a decade - “your services are no longer needed here”. It’s the emotional equivalent of your partner walking up to you one day out of the blue saying “Hey, I want a divorce. Sign here.” Then 15 minutes later it’s done. Your spouse of 10-25 years is gone. It leaves you shell-shocked in a way you can’t understand until it happens to you.

Then there’s the financial aspect. Great, you have maybe six to nine months worth of severance and unemployment benefits. Your race against the clock begins. You apply for jobs. Like hundreds of others. You get some calls, some interviews, but no offers. You wake up everyday hopeful but knowing that simply looking for a job is WAY more difficult than just showing up to the comfortable job you had. Speaking of which, after you involuntarily lose your job, that job suddenly starts looking a whole lot better than it did before. Because if nothing else at least you had a steady income, health insurance, etc.

If you’re like me you also get to listen to your six year old daughter ask “How come Mommy is home everyday now? How come she’s sad?”

Then one day you DO finally get a new job. Great, right? You walk into your new employer knowing nobody, not understanding how things get done there, and not having a reputation built over many years to help you get things done. You’re just the random new person, sitting there as a 25 year old HR assistant shows you how to submit your weekly timesheets. It’s like starting your career all over again from scratch. Bonus points if you show up at 8:45 one morning and you’re gently reminded that the work day starts at 8:30 and…you’re late. You suddenly realize “Hmm, I’m definitely not at Nike anymore.” You also discover neat things like, unlike at Nike, if you disappear from your work area for more than 30 minutes someone will definitely notice. And ask where you’ve been. Yup, you are DEFINITELY not at Nike anymore.

OP, if you’re that miserable then find another job and quit. I used to be like you. Thinking “Woe is me, having to show up at this horrible Fortune 100 company everyday.” It’s the type of attitude a person has when they’ve lost all perspective and forgotten how comparatively good they actually have things. I would know. That was the attitude I had.

Now I realize the work environment at Nike was like a veritable playground compared to most places. Where I work now, the idea of just getting up from your desk and disappearing for an hour or two to go to the gym or do whatever, would make peoples heads spin.

I would do anything to have my old job back at Nike. It’s depressing to realize that I was laid off and will likely never again have it as good as I did at Nike. I didn’t realize it or appreciate it at the time but I sure do now.

But go on OP. While you’re feeling sorry for yourself for the indignity of having to work at a company that still makes billions of dollars of profit every year, come join the rest of us out here in the real world where everyday at the office is - believe it or not - a whole lot less fun than working at Nike. You’ll love it!

To @ctu+1tjHB80q point, some people were laid off and got a package… which has run out and they are still looking for a job because the job market su-ks right now. Be thankful you have a job, some people who were laid off would gladly take your place

I am reading comments in this thread, how negative and combative you all are! Barking and lashing out just because some one is not happy with their job ( rightfully and understandably). You all are unhappy or you would not be here on this website. Stop the hate. I am like @OP I like my job and my pay. I am just sick of having no clear direction and the toxic culture these layoffs caused.

I don't know, sometimes it would be easier but I know at least 5 ex-coworkers on linkedin still without a job and they've been unemployed since November.

Market isn't exactly 2020 - 2021 anymore.

Exactly my thought! Yes some of those who were let go are still looking for job but at least they got a package and they have all their mental capacity to look for job and take control of their life
