Thread regarding Illumina Inc. layoffs

Ipulse survey is back baby!

Boycott this useless survey like 35% of the employees did in March. Let’s beat that number!
Don’t think your opinion matters these days!
Don’t take it.

This is my first time not ever not filling it out but it really is a waste of breath because it always falling on deaf ears. Not only that, but filling it out makes me think of all of the things that I’ve already released from my consciousness and results in me being frustrated and annoyed. So I’ll be skipping in attempts to retain some semblance of self preservation

@OP as a manager who has reviewed ipulse over many years. It Is anonymous But… they can slice and dice the data to get an idea of who has responded but Frankly we never identified individuals. That being said ipulse really is we-ponized against middle level managers, if its a poor result that is where the buck stops, ELT never take responsibility. So if you score badly it doesn’t hurt anyone but your manager.

Well, I fill it in and am honest. Im almost hoping it isn't anonymous, is tracked to me & I'm on the next list to go, but until they allow anonymous questions in the company meetings, this is the only chance you have to feedback directly.

It will not create even a dent if you boycott. As far as a department in APAC operation is concerned the mission from senior management to middle management cronies for reporting staff is

Participation = 100%
Good Approval rate= 100%

Or face the consequences of failing to comply.

This will definitely shore up the overall rating with one department in APAC being the bright spot.

I am also not going to take it. First, the feedback that was given in the past has never been taken in consideration. It doesn't matter what we think, the survey is just a management tool to make us think we matter. We don't. Second, not taking the survey is the only instrument of dissent that we have. Low engagement in iPulse is not going to hurt your direct manager, is going to hurt the VP of the organization. And FYI, AD and above are still receiving salary adjustments. They're just as part of "extraordinary performance" and not as part of the annual merit increase.

@em it is anonymous. only identifying information provided to leaders are team/department and location. if you work on a team where you are the only team member at that location, it is simple deduction but that isn't the case for most people. Only other way would be is if you had a unique writing style or your comments are clearly identifying. Otherwise, completely anonymous

@gj the most neutral and energy saving position is simply to not take it. If it’s “anonymous”, it’ll be fine right? Right??

Don’t be a revolutionary where no one is listening. That’s the way to get your head lopped off.
Save your anger and emotions and use it for something more useful like finding the next job.

My take: your protests against Ipulse mean nothing. The C level can’t save the company and neither can you if you were C level. So save your energy for something better.

I am torn because I was told by a middle manager years ago that’s it not anonymous, so beware, and yet it’s our chance to provide at least some feedback. I’ve never worked for a company that did this which says something. On the other hand if it’s only performative (which it seems more so lately) is it worth it? Not responding is its own form of protest. But I will never write any comments again as it easily targets people in smaller groups. Illumina was more open, inclusive, transparent previously; now it only pretends to be. Lots of Lip service. And the values thing is a joke at this point. Jury is out. It Not being anonymous really su-ks, breaks that necessary trust, and also skews the results significantly since people probably feel they cannot be 100% honest. Sad.

Chill out guys . Treat the job at Illumina as free money. Quiet quit already , coast . Figure out next steps meanwhile . Collect the paycheck till then. Fill Ipulse , stay under radar . It is this simple .

@bz uhhhh no. My “innocent middle manager” used things all of us wrote in the ipulse to blackmail us and avoid promotion. Literally said things out of the ipulse in reviews. That’s why you get RSUs, because you’re apparently well equipped to deal with the clearly life or death scenario of your team skipping a HR survey. DO NOT TAKE THE IPULSE - it is not anonymous, and it can/will be used to hurt you.

@bz if you don’t like your manager, is it best to pummel them in the comments section?

I will complete it but I will no longer fill out the larger text fields with comments.

Hello. Unfortunate middle manager here. Do what you feel is right but please understand that intentionally not responding or putting automatic low scores hurts the managers more than anything. We are the people who get pummelled by it, not above. My point being if you actually like your manager or leader, don't make their life harder. We are already struggling like the rest of you.

I still think people should complete it. If nothing else it presents a picture that the ELT cannot deny seeing, or that exists within the wider company.

I mean they won’t act on anything. Most managers won’t discuss feedback, like last time, because it’s going to be (most likely) even more negative than March. And nothing will change.
