Work life balance for Ex-ATT

Alright guys, this is for folks who left T. Tell me how your work life balance is in the new company you joined. List your company and don’t tell it’s remote and work from home.

Left end of 2021 (technically retired). 1st job was with a tech company - less toxic than T, better WLB (didn't get called in the middle of the night or on weekends), and a lot more money. Laid off after 2 years (w/4 months severance). I was thinking about just retiring, but I decided I'd try to work another few years. Took a few months, then found an IT role in a Oil and Gas company. Has a great WLB (haven't had to work any weekends or nights after 15 months) and sometimes a painfully slower pace. Took a pay cut, but pay is decent because I have far less responsibility than in the previous roles (they also recognized my previous experience when granting PTO and I get 6 weeks)

My work life balance is a 100% better now that im gone. I have a M-F day job. My job ends when I walk out the door. No more logging in at home or the expectation of checking emails after hours and or on days off.

@br "I took a new job which is fully remote but I do work more hours than I did doing 5x8 RTO for T."

That's the reality of WFH for most employees. Work hours increase when you have no commute.

Please let me come back! My life is so relaxed and drama free. I need to be toxified by T again.

RTO has significantly reduced my working hours. I start at 5AM and leave by 1PM every single day. I’ve really enjoyed it. As long as you check the box for 8 hours you’re good. Since they don’t count hours worked outside the office there’s no point of doing anything while not actively sitting in the office… just playing by the rules they set. The extra hours I used to give are now spent commuting.

"My work life balance has gotten better since RTO."

Yep, I work about 15 hours less a week. Loyalty (or lack there of) works both ways. I try to keep each day to 8 hours now. If I work more than 8 hours one day, it gets subtracted from my Friday. I get in by 6am on most days, so I head home as early as 1p on Friday if I have overworked the previous days that week. You gotta love the culture Stank created.

My work life balance has gotten better since RTO. I’m home by 3:30 every day. Laptop left in my cubicle every night. It’s working out pretty good for me.

I took the severance when they asked me to move and officially retired from AT&T. I then started looking for jobs elsewhere. I refined my search to companies that would allowed hybrid schedules. It was pretty easy to find since most companies are still hybrid and they know they need to offer the schedule flexibility to attract the younger, brighter talent. Anyway, I found a job that I was slightly over qualified for and is full-time remote. I am going into the office several times a week anyway just to work with my boss more while I learn the ropes of the new organization. Once I feel comfortable with the job I will be more remote. The remote jobs are out there but you have to focus your search on smaller, more entrepreneurial companies, university systems, or surprisingly, local and state level governments. I am getting about 85% of my pay primarily due to less benefits. Actual dollar in my paycheck is pretty close to what I was paid at ATT. I happily take the reduction for better work/life balance, and little to no commute.

Since I quit, I come back on all the on-line employee forums because I regret leaving and I miss my co-workers and corporate culture. I surely miss the nice and easy paychecks, paid time off and benefits. Oh I wish I were back in the office. I of course would need a long term disability for therapy due to my neurosis for obsessively worrying about being laid off.

I now drive for rideshare and meal delivery services since I had to switch to a different career field. I wish I just had the “problem” of just commuting to an office. I’m co stately on the road now.

What new company? I took the bargained for offer, pension lump sum, and rode off into the sunset retiring at 53.

Life is good.
