Thread regarding EchoStar Communications Corp. layoffs

Can we file a Class Action Lawsuit against EchoStar?

Is there an avenue to file a class action lawsuit against EchoStar on behalf of all the affected since 2025? Something Charlie wouldn’t expect would be a smoking g-n, and hit him where it hurts: the spectrum money he has stashed?

Like, some ominous but effective case. Example: in this film The Firm, the whistleblower simply filed “wire fraud” as the case.

Let’s start the talk here. I believe these are the types of billionaires that are meant to fall from the sky. Charlie is a mean, egomaniacal person who enjoys rising above while watching people below him suffer.

Let’s align and discuss possibilities here.

@js in a just country someone like charlie would be behind bars. He just sat on spectrum doing nothing over the years then rushed to create 5g network and fumbled again. What a pathetic low life loser, he is fit to be a gambler no more than that

@jr, that's exactly it. There was no though about the employees. The ONLY reason we got the 2 months severance was to avoid the WARN notice, this maintaining the value of the company.

Hughes borrowed money to fund Jupiter 3. Concurrently, Pradman created over the course of a decade a $1.5B war chest of cash for Hughes.

Once the bird up in the sky, Charlie renamed Jupiter as EchoStar 24, and then required Hughes to pay Charlie $190M a year. So we owed the banks, and we owed Charlie too? Like a double dip?

On top of that, Charlie took our $1.5B war chest, and it just disappeared from the Hughes books.

And now, not only is Charlie not paying up the August 1 loan payment to the banks, he is still asking for $190M from Hughes, cuts in excess of 40% of Hughes workforce, and pretends he doesn’t owe back $1.5B in cash from Hughes.

There’s something financially inappropriate and borderline illegal with what he did. There’s must be someone who’d see an angle there, and help Hughes former and current employees recover what’s stolen from them (money, career, retirement, etc).

@jg they got around the WARN notice because they simply laid us off but gave us 60 days of paychecks and benefits, and then sent us the WARN notice immediately Friday.

They’re sneaky

@jg good question. I was wondering if the paychecks until the end of Sept with benefits was a way around filling?

@OP remember when Charlie Ergen and Sweringa forced all of us employees to sign up to Boost mobile plans if we want to keep our jobs? And we were harassed by them through our own management to sign up by a certain date.

I wonder how much of those who were terminated recently cancelled their Boost plans? 🤔

Bluntly, this is a waste of time and money, and any lawyer who's willing to take your money to file it isn't someone you should trust

Layoffs su-k, and they can sc--w up your life, especially if you're near retirement age or struggle to find another role. And it doubly su-ks when poor leadership led to the layoffs. But there's no legal standing to sue over: your job was "at will", meaning they can fire you or lay you off with no justification at all, even though it causes great suffering in your life. The only exception would be if you had evidence that they were using the layoffs to cover up illegal discrimination - like laying off exclusively over-40 people in order to replace them with younger workers doing the same job at the same pay. This kind of discrimination is very, very hard to prove legally in large layoffs, even if you think it might have happened (just the fact that they laid off older workers isn't nearly enough proof).

Layoffs are hard. The next few months may be very hard. Please don't waste time and money you may not have pursuing a lawsuit that will go nowhere.

@bm especially that we had people working 10-30 years in the company and all they got for severance was two months of payroll and health benefits, just like the others who worked less than 5 years.

Funny thing, a day before the mass layoff they set up the cafeteria for a service awards ceremony for people who worked 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 years of service up to even 40 years of service. The irony or the only, depending on how much benefit of doubt you give Hughes HR

It is not to fix Hughes. It is to compensate those who had been unfairly let go, betrayed including with their retirement, coercing to kick out those near retirement age who have earned their place for decades at Hughes, for those who have bet the prime years of their career at Hughes and was then let go in most inappropriate way.

The lawsuit would not aim to revive Hughes. It’s to return to the rightful owners the money Charlie stole from Hughes employees

@OP this idea is good if the objective is to hand over more money to those affected. The lawsuit will not save Hughes or guarantee a livelihood there. The company is way behind in technology offerings and equipment. Think about it. What would get EXM to manufacture for 2-3 shifts and bring in revenue? A lawsuit won’t fix a broken company. So honest question, what would the idea of a lawsuit fix?
