Senior sponsors are often only a few years ahead of retirement or so I wonder what happens to their hipos if they leave or are forced out ?

@OP Per policy, they are reclassified as a LoPo until adopted by a new sponsor. If no sponsor is found, they eventually become a NoPo.
Is sponsorship pretty much depending on the power and longevity of the sponsor? Then being a hipo for a few years doesn’t mean a lot because those senior folks keep changing nowadays
If the HiPo has enough trajectory upward when sponsor retires, then another sponsor will jump in hoping to be in the good graces of the HiPo as the HiPo zooms upward above him.
If the HiPo is the typical chosen id--t that really needed the shielding of the retired sponsor, then the HiPo drops or is parked in the Safety group with no more upward movement.

Not seeing that with IT. They have 2 guys that took their toys and left 2 or so years ago cuz they were told they were going as far as they can. Their cronies are in certain spots and they are helping their cronies. These people are just drones, can’t think for themselves. That brand name follows you or them even if gone or did bad like the La Quinta guy.
The HiPo is in big trouble zone, they need to start kissing ar$$es ASAP to find new mentor or sponsor or whatever.

Logical outcome is that the HiPo will become a collateral damage, since no one will protect them and fight for their tanking - now other sponsors can bump this HiPo down and get their HiPos up there in OWD zone.
HiPo gets sc--wed. This company is not based on meritocracy no matter what the managers parrot here. The system is so biased towards their own chosen people.
Remaining senior managers smell the blood in the water and quickly find a replacement. Hipo should start looking outside quickly.
